  • Because i have a little workshop, i needed a solution for a vise, that i can use at my workbench. But when i don't need the vise, i want it to be out of the way. So i came up with an idea that really worked well for me.

    Loving all of your videos and ingenious solutions to small-shop problems.
    All the folding vise needs now is some kind of retention system for the star knobs, so they can be left in the vise board when in the folded-down/ stored position.

    Very nice. I'll have to give it a go too. One thing I'd suggest though is that when you drill into the bench top for the threaded inserts I would drill all the way through. It would make it easier to clean out sawdust and debris by letting it fall through.

    Good idea and video. I did something similar for both my Bose and my 2 wheel grinder. I didn’t make the slide though. I put the vise on wood as you did and also my grinder on another. I lined up four holes the same in both the wood bases. Then inserted four threaded inserts into my workbench. Also used knob bolts. Just place whichever I want on the table screw it in and wala, secured!

      Or, alternatively, thicken the board (say, 12 mm Ply, & expand the slipway - that'd be enough to employ longer screws/fixings, the weight differential would be negligible), Anthony ?

    Very nicely done!! This video was done in such a manner as to allow those of us viewing to try and replicate your work. I have a question...Are you concerned with the weight of the vise as it is stored under the bench hanging? I was wondering if its weight might possible be too much for the hinges to hold it. Thank you and also thank you for allowing us to subscribe to your channel! Bless you sir!

    • @ISIMPLYBUILTIT
      @ISIMPLYBUILTIT  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you man. No i was not really concerned. Because the screws are loaded on shear and not on traction. That means the weight will be hold by the screws and not by the wood. And such a screw in plywood holds more as we think. To mount the whole construction under the table top, i used many screws. By the way, the vise weighs 13 kg.

    I like your videos except for the music on this one. It appears from the comments below that you know of this problem and will remedy that shortly. When cutting out the layers for the hinges, a router plane would make that much less time consuming and get it flat and parallel to the top surface easier. And when drilling the holes to match the countersinks in the hinges self-centering drill bits put the hole in the correct location more accurately than eye-balling center. It appeared that you did, however, do a remarkably good job of cutting with chisel and centering the countersunk holes without those items.

    most of you in the comment section clearly don't have a clue about real world workshop situations. What would happen if you need to undo something really tight and your vice needs to hold it still so you can apply force to undo it. This silly vice holder would simply break apart because it clearly cannot stand up to a significant amount of force being applied to it

    Fantastic solution! I have a question.
    Will the weight of the wise overload the hinges when it is under the table? It will probably break them.
    Thanks!

      Thanks. No that's not a problem at all. The hinges are too big that they can break.
