This Jaws parody scene is on the level of Mel Brooks using John Hurt in his Alien parody scene in Spaceballs.

Mommy Dearest I can understand why it's hated because it's one of the most uncomfortable movies ever! But Faye Dunaway was good as Joan Crawford, she didn't deserve the razzie nomination. But 1941 isn't that bad, it was ok.

When this film was released to theatres, I was 18. I loved it ever since. I am the son of a WWII war veteran. You stated that Lenny and Squiggy are in this film, and they are, but what you may not know is that they were playing Willy and Joe, two recurring characters that appered in print throughout WWII in order to encourage the tropps and the people back home. Over the years I have read that this film was a hit in Japan but did not so well in the U.S.. I have the director commentayr DVD. Thank you for reviewing thi. Am happy ypou enjpoy it as well.

@@aurorauplinks I feel that inclusion of Toshiro Mifune in a pretty big role was a big deal in Japan. And it was comedy but respectful to everybody. It was pretty common in older war movies to make Germans a real characters and not just one dimensional enemies but Japanese with couple of exceptions (like Tora! Tora! Tora! or Battle of Midway) never got that kind of treatment. It was partly post-war propaganda when defeated Germany and Japan were needed as allies against Soviet Union but there was still respect and much deeper understanding of what WWII was and how horrible it was. That seems lacking from many modern WWII movies, I feel.

I was working for Greg Jein around 1990. (Greg built the miniatures for this film, including the ferris wheel.) He still had one of the giant light up Santa Claus's from the movie. He brought it over to the shop one day so that we could take some pictures of it, before sending it to Japan for an exhibition.
The model pier with the ferris wheel used to be part of the Universal Studios Tour. I saw it in person when I went through the tour about the same time I was working for Greg.

The thing I really like about 1941 is that we learn that WWII happened in the Little Cars universe. Which means there was a Cars Hitler, a Cars holocaust, a Cars Pacific War, a Cars D-Day, a Cars nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a Cars Rape of Nanking, a Cars Battle of Iwo Jima...
This leads to so many important questions, like: were the Cars Little Boy and Fat Man nukes sentient? Was it a suicide mission? Are ALL Cars nuclear weapons sentient? Did Tsar Bomba have a personality?
What kind of car was Car Hitler? A VW? A forklift?
Was there a Cars 9/11? Were the planes hijacked, or were the planes themselves radicalized?
    I could go on

The blend of history, comedy, epic practical effects, and just plain insanity left a huge impression on me and my sense of humor. I don't get why this isn't up there with "Animal House" or "Airplane" as a classic. Nice to see someone else gets the joke. To this day every time I see a P-40 Flying Tiger I think of Belushi. Every time I see a B-17, I think of Nancy Allen, but that's a different story. Anyway, great review, and please keep them coming.

I never thought of Snob reviewing this but I'm really really glad he did. However ...I do believe this deserved an "ohh boyyy" at the beginning, but we can't always get everything we want.

Oh my God, the Snob is reviewing a non-horror movie I've actually seen before!
My dad loved this movie and passed that love onto me. I was floored by both the epicness and scope and the absurd sense of humor. I even shared it with a friend of mine after that (we both kept referring to Eddie Deezen's character as "Mandark Guy" since our only familiarity with him at the time was voicing Mandark on Dexter's Laboratory). He and the dummy were my favorite characters at the time.
So imagine my surprise when I found out this movie was hated. I felt like the critics and I weren't living on the same planet when I found THAT out.
Also, hate to be a Douchey McNitpick, but Toshiro Mifune's surname is pronounced "MEE-FOO-NAY." Just for future reference...

This is definitely on my list of Top 5 Cinema Snob episodes, maybe even Top 3. There's a gleam in Brad's eye when he talks about 1941, and you can even hear how excited he is to talk about it when he's not on camera. I haven't seen this in a couple of decades and I remembered very little about it, but watching this episode prompted me to go ahead and buy the collector's edition from Amazon. Only 5.99 if anyone else wants it. Highly recommended!

Christopher Lee has always been my favorite actor. This is so special to me as it was the first Lee film I saw in the theater. I have always loved it and never understood the hate. Belushi is hysterical and steals the movie as Wild Bill

I keep coming back and rewatching this review because there is something so GREAT about Snob just loving a film and gushing over it. Yes, his riffs are hilarious but this is like a warm mug of coco after a long day.

Great Job Brad! A true favorite and missed it in theatres because of critics and word of mouth. Best scene: Rotten Pomogranite being tossed off the ferris wheel. "It's going, it's going, it's going". Poor Murray Hamilton. Also, the kidnapping of Slim Pickens by Ninja's disguised as X-Mas trees is pure genuius. Charlton Heston was approached to play General Stilwell, but said no and implored Speilberg with "Son, dont make this movie". Thank you Steven for making this movie.

I saw the film in a good ol' local cinema when it was out in 1979, when I was 13! There were of course some 'dirty' gags in it - to my 13-year-old self - especially with Treat Williams character Sitarski, that were bits I felt like I wasn't supposed to see but got to see anyway. But Spielberg's riotous movie had me transfixed and in awe from the get-go. I felt like I was the only kid in my school who had seen it. And already a huge fan and collector of movie soundtracks - Jaws, Star Wars, King Kong - this John Williams soundtrack quickly became a favorite. I loved 1941 then, considered it a guilty pleasure for years, but I have even greater appreciation for it today. It still has some of the best cinematography, a consistent, period look throughout, countless sight gags and dialog bits, and simply THE best miniature effects. The dogfight sequences with the P-40 and the Beechcraft trainer over Hollywood Blvd are outstanding and to this day are more thrilling than any CGI effects. I love its crazy pacing, all the great set pieces, and all of its over-the-top madness. And oh, the USO dance and chase scored to John Williams 'Swing, Swing, Swing' should be ranked up there with some of the great musical sequences ever put on film. It's one big feast of a movie. Thanks Cinema Snob for this gushing review. I obviously and wholeheartedly agree with you.

I love this movie and the music by John Williams, it just sets the scene. I love the chaos and the wackiness that focuses on the paranoia that comes when a war starts. There's just a lot of joy in the craziness in this movie that will make me love it forever.
