- I have owned this Toyota Auris for roughly a year and a half, and have clocked up 25,000 miles on it in that time. Let me take you for a tour of it and tell you about what it's like to live with, and what I like and dislike about this car. I will also discuss the Toyota Hybrid system.

Thank you SO much for posting this video. It was like someone reviewing my own car (also a white 2014 Auris Hybrid). I bought Horace in October 2014. I don't do a great deal of mileage (5,000ish a year) but since Covid that has dropped dramatically so I'm still only at 44,500. Particularly now, I drive a lot of very short journeys (2 miles) but overall I am still getting over 45mpg which is a massive improvement on its predecessor, a 1.4 Corsa Automatic. That car drank like a fish. On motorways/dual carriageways I tend to drive a 60-65mph and at that speed usually achieve just over 60mpg. I never got the Corsa beyond 47mpg.
First things first. It sounds like you still have the original auxilliary battery. Mine failed last New Year's Eve. It's located in the right hand side of the boot. Trust me, when that goes your Auris will become a heap of useless scrap. My local tyre depot replaced it for £79. Fortunately, it didn't fail while the car was in the garage. That would have been a nightmare unless you had some 20 foot long jump leads or one of those booster devices. The problem is that once the battery has failed you can't easily open the boot. It can be done but it's a real faff. If I get some time I may do a video of how it's done unless someone knows a quick method.
According to Collins dictionary the horn is the device that makes a loud noise as a signal. They obviously never drove a Toyota Auris. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC doesn't even start to cover it.
The reversing light buzzer. With you all the way on that one because while that was beeping the sound from the sensors was almost totally obscured. My Toyota dealer soon fixed that (free of charge). I can't remember the details now but there are a number of settings which only a Toyota dealer (or someone with the right kit) can fix. Why users can't be given the option is beyond me.
Now to my biggest niggle. Why on earth did Toyota bother to fit that stupid clock which you have to adjust every October and March? A couple of lines of code in the software would have easily put a clock on the main screen. Job done.
However, small niggles aside, I love this car - best one I've ever owned. My Toyota dealer persuaded me to test drive the new Corolla a couple of months ago and it's a quantum leap from the Auris but my head ruled my heart for once and I decided that forking out all that extra money just to drive down to Tescos (other supermarkets are available) was a step too far. It even had a rev counter - something I miss on the Auris.

Wow, thank YOU so much for writing such a detailed comment. Hopefully your insights are helpful for others who watch this video. My Auris is a car that I will be hanging onto for some time. In relation to your battery failure, I suspect that this may be to do with your short journeys and it not having enough time to charge. There is a jump starting terminal in the fuse panel in the engine bay, which can be used to connect a small booster pack to get you going. I may take your advice and do a short video on how to access it. I was also able to change the warning buzzer with the use of a Carista dongle and the app so that it now beeps just once when I put the car in reverse. A vast improvement, as it was just distracting the way it was before.
You're very welcome. The problem with the jump start terminal is that, if the car is parked in my garage nose first (it's not really practical the other way around) you can't get to it without extremely long jump leads or one of those starter packs.
Something else that's occurred to me. You mention that you are a little concerned that the main battery doesn't fully charge. Don't worry, because it won't. According to my Toyota dealer the system is designed to charge up to something like 80 or 90%. I can't remember the exact figure. It will never fully charge.
A change to HID headlamps sounds like a good plan too.
The plan is to keep this one for a very long time or until I can't get the new Corolla at a more sensible price.

I had a 2004 Corsa Automatic too, they're the worst on fuel.. Would only get around 180 miles for a full tank. Now looking to buy a Hybrid Auris.. It was out of the auris or Audi A3 but for now i'll get the Auris, I'll have my fun in a german in a few years time lol!

I'm watching this video again, and of course, it's brilliant. A slight update on my car. It now costs €55 to 60 to fill up to the brim. However I do get between 490 to 520 miles, and fantastic mpg as well. Today I went up to Glendalough, and when I came back by the motorway I was averaging 71 to 74 mpg going along at 60 mph. I refuse to go at 70 mph/120 Kilometers because it does use more fuel, and I'm not obliged to. I think going at 55 to 60 is the sweet spot for these Hybrid cars and electric cars too. The 12-volt battery is in the boot to the right. Overall I'm thrilled with my car, and I'll hang on to her for quite a few more years. I need to get my car serviced this year. I don't know if do need to replace the transmission fluid? I do know that electric cars also need transmission fluid as well. I'd never go back to a normal ice car. I may get either a plug-in Hybrid or an electric car next. Does cruise control eat into your mpg?

Thank you for this in depth review. Three days ago I bought a 2014 Auris Hybrid estate with 80,000 miles on the clock and it still feels like new. I agree with you the ride seemed very firm almost brutal at times. After a while I decided to check the tyre presure. All four tyres were 45psi instead of the recommended 33 psi. I adjusted the pressures and now I am totally delighted with my purchase. It's a great little car. True the eco mode is sluggish but the power mode works really well and it goes where I point it. Great review and best regards.

Looking at this video now because I will be getting an auris by December, u have put my mind at ease with this review. Just recently bought a Ford B-max because of my son, biggest mistake of my life, it drinks my fuel.

Very informative review. Im close to buying the auris hybrid estate in the next two weeks. Ive two children and am concerned about the lack of space in the back seat for them and an extra adult aswell. Sad to hear about the lack of miles per gallon fuel economy on motorways. Although my driving will mainly be for urban school runs etc. I am attracted to toyota's reliability. I want few problems with a car.
Thanks! Overall, I think the Auris is a very good car. 40,000 miles in for me (over 100,000 in total) and zero issues. It is reliable for sure. If most of your driving is urban, then this is a good option for you. The fuel economy isn't terrible on the motorways. It's just not as good as it otherwise would be.

@@kepo9522 I did think about the Yaris, yes, as a cheaper option but decided against it because of my height and I thought it would be too small for me. I'm glad I did cause we now have a baby and need the space.

Bought my auris 2014 hybrid about 9 months ago.
Only negative point is the built-in navigation, hard to operate.
I had thought about trying to source the module, which my car doesn't have, but I didn't bother in the end. It's hard to beat Google maps.
Smartphone apps provide realtime updates on traffic jams, dangerous situtions, even mobile speeding-trap (or whatever it is called in English) and much more. Making the older basic level navigation systems pretty much useless to most of us.
Thanks for the wonderful review. How’s the road noise, tire noise and wind noise? Is it comfortable on long journeys especially highways?
I have to say it is a very comfortable car on any journey, and it does feel very refined to drive. The eCVT setup does take a bit of getting used to and when accelerating hard the engine revs its head off but settles down to silence afterwards.
13:25 Sounds like a cylinder misfire. Apparently that happens with same generation Priuses, and it's fixed by changing spark plugs and ignition coils, cleaning the fuel injectors, replacing the PCV valve, and cleaning the intake manifold and EGR pipe. The EGR pipe seems to be the main culprit, though.

@@Endfloat Make sure to have your coils and plugs changed on schedule. If this happens again, tell your mechanic to check the injectors and the EGR system.

Hey thanks for the review, I'm trying to decide between this and a 2010 Prius as I have a baby. What's your thoughts, the auris is a newer design but smaller boot...
There is an Auris estate, which could be an option. The Auris benefits from a bigger engine than the Prius too, plus I think it looks nicer. I have a 1 year old and find the Auris hatchback ok though but a bigger boot would be nice.
Hello Enfloat, thank you for the nice and deep-dive info! There are few things that I wonder about:
1, what is the average speed of the “creeping”?( the moment you lift your foot off the break and car starts to move by itself, like most of the automatics)
2, Q related to creeping again- is it that car still moves forward when you break or does the “creep” shut down and engages again after your set your foot off the break?
3, does the car roll back when standstill in traffic on a hill/ incline?

Hi, thanks for watching. It creeps very slowly. Probably as slow as a normal automatic car. It's too slow to register on the Speedo, so I don't know what speed it is. It will stop creeping if you brake, and will hold on a hill.
picking mine up on wed 2014 with 30k on clock, was kind of still bit unsure, was reliability i was after mainly, no tax and bit of decent mileage helps of course, headlights can soon upgrade if they are a pain, but video has convinced me, maybe the money the second thoughts, never been good at parting with money lol. but great video. glutton for punishment now watching again lol

Great review! I'm planning to buy this car, living in Sweden. Do you have any information about driving it during winter time? It snows here and we have to change to winter tyres on our cars. Plus, does this effect the generator or the "fluid consumption" while accelerating the car?

Hi sorry I'm only replying now. I can't speak from experience because we get fairly mild winters here in Ireland. I don't think there's anything extraordinary you'd need to do with this car that wouldn't apply to other cars. Just make sure you use the correct oil and that it's serviced and in good mechanical order. I'm not sure I understand the second part of your question. When accelerating hard, the motor generators operate in motor mode, and the fuel consumption will increase. My experience though is that you get better economy by accelerating hard to your cruising speed and then just holding the cruising speed.
I am having second thoughts of buying toyota auris hybrid though I really love to own one because it’s been rampant here in the UK the catalytic converter theft. What are your thoughts about this Endfloat?
There are protective plates available that make the cat a lot more difficult to remove. I've been contemplating one myself to tell the truth. I think they're around €300.

32:10 hybrid not going up to a full charge is absolutely normal. As far as I know they try to maintain charge only up to 80% to keep the batteries lasting longer. I only charged my Auris to 100% once, by driving from a looong hill down.
The knocking is due to to moisture in manifold cleaning the egr cooler and egr. Manifold fixed this on my prius

How did you do the headlights upgrade was it hard and what bulbs did you get.
Not hard at all. I bought a HID upgrade kit from ledperf.com. it's pretty much plug and play although I had to reverse the polarity of the ballast.
Great review man. Looking at a touring sport... but it has 117k miles on it. Has full toyota service history. Would you think this is ok, or too many miles? Cheers.
I wouldn't be overly concerned with that mileage, if it has the service history. Clearly the owner was willing to spend money on keeping it right. Mine has 96,000 miles now and drives almost like new (small rattle I think is an ARB drop link).

You're very welcome. All I've had to do was replace the brake pads all round, wipers, tyres, couple of bulbs and 2 oil changes. It's proven itself to be a very reliable car so far. I now have over 100,000 miles in it and it still drives like new. I won't be parting with it any time soon!
Usually just number plate and side light bulbs and brake pads and tyres, plus regular service oil change are all that's needed.
The don't have a starter or Alternator to go wrong and no belts or clutch.
Toyota has been the most reliable car I've ever had and I'm 62 so had a few over the years.
I've had my '14 Excel Hybrid since October '19 (still only done 45k). Apart from its scheduled services it has cost me £79 for a new auxilliary battery plus few wiper blades.
Thinking of buying this car you should not hesitate.. best car ive driven!! Better then the audi q5 2017 that i had before!!!

I travel for work from Finglas to Sandyford twice a day and I drive a Golf GTI 2016 and I was wondering would getting something like this cost me much less in petrol? I currently spend about 40 euro a week
I get between 55 and 65mpg out of it, and a bit less at fast motorway speeds. It depends on your driving style really, but in reality you'd have to be nursing the GTi along and ragging the auris for you to not see a difference.

No, at 60mph the engine will have to be running.

Is this car ok if you were to do a wild atlantic way type tour once in a while (that has some hilly areas)?
Get your brakes checked out at a garage. Sounds like your pads are worn. And yes, it's absolutely ideal for that type of driving. The engine is powerful and responsive.
@@Endfloat the dealer was saying he recently replaced with new brake pads, he reckons its stiffy due to them not being used... does he sounds fishy? It only has 32k miles
If it isn't getting used, you could get corrosion on your discs, which will give a grinding noise that will go away with time. Bear in mind though that when you're running on motors alone you might be hearing the brakes more cause there's no engine noise. I did notice that a little when I got the car but it was never bad.

I've just taken purchase of a 2014 Excel Auris ( with cruise control :o) ) its just done 16,000 miles. How far will the car travel in EV mode before the engine kicks in to recharge the battery?
You're really only talking 3 or 4 kilometres. The battery is more like a capacitor. Charges and discharges quickly and supplements the engine at times of high demand.
How much did you pay for it, if i can ask? Found one with 17k miles for £11600 from 2014 and i am not sure if I should go for it.

So does the electric motor assist not come on at all when driving at higher speeds?
Yeah the motor(s) works with the engine at higher speeds, but it's not on by itself.
I have the same car that I bought from an auction and was disappointed too when I realised that it doesn't have cruise control. I didn't know you could just buy a switch and it would work. Thanks very much for that. Do you have the eBay link that you bought the switch from? Also do you have any tips for how to remove the center horn part now that you did it? Thanks
I intend to make a video on this in the future. The tricky part is getting the horn button off.
Did you disconnect the battery before taking off the horn button?
@@sonmezb no, there's a spade terminal in the fuse panel that you can disconnect that removes power from all the 12v electrics. It was white if I remember correctly.

Great review, really helpful. I've just purchased a 2013 plate excel hybrid auris and suspect the catalytic converter is located on the base of the vehicle. I live in london where there is a high rate of theft of the converters and I understand there is not much you can do protect it from being stolen, some garages are offering to install a cage to add some protection which costs extra. I wandered what your thoughts are regarding this? Also what trim is your car in the review?
My thoughts on it are that the scumbags doing it should be taken out and "dispatched with" if I'm honest. The cage is one deterrent. I had wondered would it be possible to route the traction battery current through the cage! I have security cameras on my property as well as a floodlight. That might be something to consider. Good job Does this have a timing belt or chain? Hows overtaking 50mph to 70mph
It has a chain. Overtaking at this speed is excellent, but you do have to get used to the engine revving hard when you plant the boot.
@@EndfloatThanks that wouldn't bother me once it had a bit of power. The maintenance costs must be tiny compared to a diesel no clutch flywheel dpf egr ect.

Just use a Bluetooth ODB2 connector and the Prius app on your phone and shut that reverse beep off!
That's exactly what I did in the end! It was driving me mental.
yep headlights are crap, did you just upgrade bulbs on yours, and did it make huge difference, be better shining torch out of window than these i have now, and yes you were right about blind spot as well.
I bought a HID upgrade kit from ledperf.com, which did make a massive difference, but the problem is they're not legal in Ireland because HID bulbs can only be used in self leveling fittings with washers. LED kits are available that don't have the same restriction.
@@Endfloat was just looking at philips x-treme pro 150 vision ones £35.00 each supposed to be lot better led as well so maybe worth a try. and like you say they are road legal, cant believe like you toyota fitted headlights that are so bad.

In a hybrid When would the battery need to be replaced and how much will it cost me?
I don't know for sure, but from what I've seen and heard, my understanding is that the batteries are intended to last for the useful life of the vehicle. Replacing them would be a very expensive task on a car that would have high mileage and low value anyway. I've heard of many Toyota hybrids exceeding 400,000 miles.
I take it that you mean the main traction battery. My understanding is that they're guaranteed for 11 years but my local dealer tells me they've never replaced one. The auxilliary battery, however, lasts pretty much like any other car battery. Mine died at just over five years old.

What's your display saying you're getting? I find it's pretty accurate. It does seem from what you're saying that you're using more than what I'd consider normal. It depends how hard you're accelerating too.

Sorry, I don't have a definitive answer on that for you, but I've heard of several exceeding 300,000 miles. People use them as taxis too, which is demanding. If I were buying one though, I'd be looking for something with less than 150,000 miles.

I have had no issues with the car whatsoever. It's one of the things I rate the car highly on, and 70,000km is nothing really. I'd recommend it, yes.

You can even buy a Auris Hybrid with 200.000km. They simply dont break. Maintenance costs are low.
My is Auris 1.8 Hybrid. So is the third generation ?
No, there is no 3rd generation auris, at least not in Europe. We went back to the Corolla name after this model. I think the Japanese imports were 1.5.

Best of luck with it! The cruise control is on a stalk on the lower right side of the steering wheel, so no. Incidentally, I retrofitted the cruise control. It didn't have it from factory but I bought the switch and installed it.

Pretty much everything you said in your review is spot on 👍I would say the eco mode helps you stay in EV longer when going over potholes and stuff (you don't accidentally blip the accelerator due to the movement as it's not as sensitive) Power mode brilliant to remind you there is poke if you want it 😊
Oh, I managed to switch the continuous reverse beep to single beep (the continuous was too annoying!)
Very easy - just need a £/€10 obdi2 reader from ebay etc. and the appropriate app for your phone. Connect to car, and select the setting you want. It can't be illegal I would think, as its an option. It's not being cancelled, just changed to single beep. Cheers mate

I'm from Dublin in Ireland myself. This was a fantastic and very detailed review. I have a late 2012 Auris Hybrid, and it's a truly brilliant car. I get between 53 mpg to 75 on the open roads, and pretty much the same in city/villages. It costs only 35 to 45 to fill up completely, and I get between 480 to 520 miles. Only paying 180 road tax is great compared to 514 for my 2003 1.6 VW Golf. The sound system as well is brilliant. I still get a lot of odd looks from people. Are people in Ireland not used to seeing these cars gliding by with no engine sound or are people in this country somewhat backward?
I can't say I've noticed the strange looks, although manoeuvring around car parks can lead to some surprised pedestrians. Yes, I agree, it is a fantastic car, and one I'll be keeping for a few years yet!
well got the new Toyota corolla and although i like the auris the corolla is miles ahead...not brand new they cant get them until next march huge backlog . but its only done 4000 ex demo.
In what way is it miles ahead? I'd be curious to take one for a spin.
@@Endfloat better on fuel lot faster off the mark than the old auris i had, lot nicer car inside as well, just moved on a long way since mine was made but mine was a 2014, not brand new mine its 21 plate but was ex loan car cant get new until march at least next year, even longer with other makes. but it had only done 3000 so as good as new but cheaper than brand new saved 4k on original retail price. think it was one they loaned out to people while theirs were being serviced, but immaculate non the less.

What did you do to improve them? Was it a big improvement? Is it legal and does the warranty still stand?

Thanks. I installed xenon bulbs initially but they're not legal in Ireland so I'm back running the halogens. Apparently, there is a mod available at Toyota dealerships where they'll change the bulbs for brighter ones for no cost, but you'd have to check that yourself. I know in Ireland I could fit led bulbs and they'd be legal.
@@Endfloat thanks for the quick reply pal. I was going to test drive a 2015 model this weekend. Looking at the headlight i just presumed it was xenon. My current car has xenon’s and they are brilliant (excuse the pun) so hearing all the complaints with these ones on the auris is real off putting
@@Steven-qi4gm I wouldn't let the lights put you off. It's a fantastic car and the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. Best of luck with it if you do buy it!
nearly bought one yeaterday...a tourer,until I found that cat converter theft is rife on these hybrids as they are worth alot more than normal ones and Toyoata dealers have a massive backlog on orders with no end in sight and the affected cars unusable.
You can get a protective plate that goes on over the cat that makes it a lot harder to steal. It costs about 300 euro I think. I'm thinking of getting one myself (I wouldn't mind electrifying it too!)

@@Endfloat so you can disable it with a good scantool without braking any law. For me, it helps remind me that I am in reverse. I am not bothered with it since all my accidents in the past were in reverse in parking lot. As a car for almost 8 years old, it is deathly reliable, supple, quiet, good torque, and pretty good handling.
@@rondhole yes I know I can disable it but unfortunately I haven't got the scan tool to do it and the dealer won't do it for me cause they say it's a safety feature. To me it's a distraction when you should be concentrating on your reversing.n
@@Endfloat Well, I am in Germany with very strick rules about car modification. Disabling it can cause me loose insurance coverage, and ilegal to drive. Even washing car in your driveway or parking lot and polishing head light are not legal here. Fortunately, you can still fix and DIY as long as it is not Sunday or holiday.
@Greg Man, anything not normal is Illegal in DE. No washing car in your own home/parking lot, No polishing or coating your headlight, only new replacement is allowed. , No after market LED on anywhere outside the car, even inside cabin need approval, Alteration wheel size need approval. Canceling Beep or warning sound if it is part of security is illegal.
What you expect mate? It's a hatchback not a saloon or 7seater to cater for your height.
My Mk2 golf, which is also a hatchback and a much smaller car outside has much more room inside. My last auris, a first gen, also did. There are other cars on the market for similar money with much more back seat space.

I have had to get the breakdown company out 5 times as it does not hold the battery charge
It seems this is a problem with this hybrid unless you have means of recharging the battery either plug in or with a solar panel you can use which is placed on the dash board
This car is still under warranty so surely there has to be something wrong with the battery
I feel the manufacturers should alert buyers that this car is not suitable for occasional use i e only once or twice a week
The breakdown people have said the majority of cars they have to assist are these type of cars Not encouraging
Such a shame because when it goes it is a lovely drive and very efficient regarding petrol
I can't say I've found this to be an issue. It sounds like you have a problem that needs fixing there. Is it the traction battery or the 12v battery that's going dead? Either way it shouldn't happen. I've left mine for a couple of weeks with no issues whatsoever.
