I love my Honda E, which was my second EV after owning a Model S for 8 years! Here are my thoughts: 1. Wing mirror screens are great but the rear view mirror is no good if you need reading glasses! (Luckily you can turn that off). 2. It’s roomy, comfortable , great to drive, nippy, comfortable on the motorway. 3. It could be quieter, but it’s not too bad. 4. The air con is very aggressive. 5. Wireless Apple Car Play is great. 6. The driver’s seat height adjustment could do with one more control. It can be tricky to get it exactly where you want it. 7. The boot is tiny. 8. The range is fine - if you regularly need to go further get a different car. 9. The driver aids (warnings) and adaptive cruise control is good (if sometimes annoying). 10. The one pedal driving is great. Rarely need to break. 11. It’s overpriced.
I have a Model S and am considering a second EV. For me, the Honda E seems full of features but is significantly pricey when compared with an MG ZS EV, which I test drove recently.
@@maxflight777 I did. My Model S was from Aug 2014 so the warranty was about to expire ( later this week in fact). I did not relish the idea of having a £30k car that could be rendered useless by a drivetrain or battery failure. Neither of which would have been a feasible repair. Why not get a model 3? A couple of reasons… but mainly because I would never buy from Tesla again. Poorest service of any car maker in history. (It wasn’t always that way.)
I have a 2022 top spec model Leaf, it has exceeded my expectations at every turn and I love it. I have never suffered from range anxiety because I adjust my travel plans to take charging into account. A recent long trip to see friends went without any problems, we got to our destination which was 200 miles and put the car on charge while we had coffee and cake, it was fully charged by the time we were done, the return journey was as uneventful as the drive down. An EV suits my driving needs perfectly and I'll never go back to and will never go back to an ICE. I looked at the Honda and love the shape.....well everything but the wait for delivery was too long. Great video......
I loved the car when I drove it but, in January at least, 80miles just wasn’t enough rage to get from one town to another. I am disappointed that Honda hasn’t increased the size of the battery as technology has moved forward.
I am a huge Honda fan. But, the 100 mile range, ultra show charging and less than average efficiency makes it a No-Go. And it was not that cheap. My Model 3LR is to arrive in 60 days. Can't wait.
I enjoy your road test and perspectives and looked forward to this opinion. Unfortunately we won't be seeing these in the states but I really liked these. Obviously, I like the Mini EV as well but I went the cheaper route picking up a 2016 Chevy Spark EV with EPA range of 82 miles. As you said as long as you select these shorter range EVs with the right knowledge for it's use, these are perfect cars for first EVs, 2nd family vehicle and retired folks. Also as you mentioned these are fun and fairly zippy cars so taking them out for shorter trips is fun. Keep up the good work great informative videos.
On the hottest day on record, 40.3C at Coningsby, nearby in Lincolnshire. I achieved 4.6 miles per kWh in my Mini, so I’m well impressed with this. I feel that if I had been rapid charging, the Mini would have done better than the Honda e. It usually pulls almost the full 50 kW upto 85%.
Price is it's Achilles heel. Honda's engineers and designers made a great car that, genuinely, I don't think their corporate high ups and accountants wanted to sell. They've priced it out of the market and I can't account for that otherwise, considering that other, bigger, longer range cars can be bought for much less. Such a crying shame.
Another car that gets bad press for range is the Mazda MX30. I had one for a day a quite liked it. If you get a chance to drive one, some time, a comparison with the Honda e would be very interesting.
I always think with new lft batteries on the way that are lighter, more energy dense meaning less weight and more range the small hatch will soon have its EV day. Second gen MINI SE doing 250 real world miles would be a good start and I’m sure Honda are already working on the second gen Honda E. It does look very retro mk 1 golf to me. The price is still a problem these need to be £24k not £36k.
fancier inside but reminds me a lot of my 2011 Nissan LEAF. Real world range and recharge times made it very challenging to use for long distances. At least it uses CCS.
I get 4.5 miles/kWh without trying from my eniro. Yes it's pretty to look at with a few neat touches, just a shame it's so inefficient. Compliance car?
I've got a honda E, and I am fully aware of climate change and I'm not one of those idiots that denies it. but the offset of an EV compared to a smaller engine petrol or diesel car is negligible at best. It really doesn't make a difference in the long run to the environment and that will all become very apparent when thousands of us need new batteries in 5 or 6 years time. Please dont take this as a personal attack, the rest of the video is great. Just think its not right to say that EV's as they currently are will save the world. The reason 90% of people buy them is either for a tax write off, or because of the price of fuel, 10% or less will buy them for environmental reasons.
We purchased a Honda E which has a VIN indicating it was manufactured in 2020, though the first registration was in 2022. Does that not seem very odd? Would you please give us some feedback please.
Nice video as always and I always like how you are kind about a car without overlooking critical stuff. It is a funny car, bit like from a car cartoon film. I just think the price is not in a good relation to the extremely short range. But a stylish thing 👍 And regarding the heat wave: well, it is the hottest summer of our life so far but the coolest summer of our future
The Honda E isn't designed for or intended to be a long distance cruiser. It is primarily intended as a high end city commuter vehicle. Keep within that context, and it's highly successful...... It has sufficient range to undertake the UK's 20.8 mile average daily commute for a full 5 day working week, without needing to recharge.
@@Brian-om2hh I know that, it is obvious. All I say is that I find it quite expensive for such a short range, considering that the battery is by far the most expensive component. So a very small battery means that its share in the overall cost is much lower. Before the crazy price jumps this yr due to the energy crisis, a basic Model 3 SR+ was at pretty much the same price tag but with about 2.5-3 times real world range. and electric seats etc which the Honda surprisingly seems not to have - at least the one in this test. I just think they overdo the price quite a bit on this one but it is stylish!
It’s probably a better car than the Fiat 500e but I don’t think it’s £10,000 better… I bought a Fiat and 9000 miles and 8 months and no regrets only joy as I believe Fiat have made a decent car and they really understand how to capture the spirit of the original car.

My biggest concern with this car was the digital mirror. I was not able to quick focus on it when a bit tired. Other point the other digital mirros are very bad when sunlight falls on the sensor. Rest a very funny little citycar a bit more batterie would be fine.
That is a very expensive car for just over 100 something miles of range. Looks great, but at that price it should have a much better range. Honda and Mazda are 2 car companies that are in serious trouble in the coming years.
tbh the battery size would do me, i charge my current 500e at home usually daily via 3pin socket. i do about 150 miles a week to work and back and i do only local driving maybe max i drive is 12 miles to town and 12 miles back maybe 1 time a month. rest is local shops
Another you tuber has a review on one of these 1000 miles in a day and it took 17 charges, my fav is his Tesla model 3 ending why I am done with EV's and going back to combustion. If you want real-world reviews on EV's he is the man as he isn't trying to sell anything and just shows why he cant have one any longer.
Lovely looking car, not sure about the camera mirrors. Just seems like something that’s just not needed. Also could imagine they’d be expensive if knocked off.
Yes we all need to be in EVs - more manufacturers need to do the same as MG and bring the prices down - and/or reflect better residuals of BEV in the Lease or PCP prices. I know MG is Chinese built but I feel most other manufacturers are pushing BEV prices up with no reason at all other than pushing up profits...
Nice review. But I have to say Honda seem to have really missed the mark here. Looks great and cabin looks nice. But the frankly rubbish range combined with the high price and not great efficiency/charging speed mean its a definite no from me. Shame as always had Hondas in the 80/90's. Frankly I can see Honda and Toyota not even existing in 10 years time!
Toyota have the funds to pivot if they choose to. Their first effort isn't encouraging on that front, though. Honda don't. Honda seem on a constant precipice of financial doom and I don't really expect them to make it, sadly.
Nice car, and really looks more like the electric successor to the classic BMC Mini, but... it's over priced, isn't it. It's why they don't really sell that well. For example, my VW ID.3 has lots more specification [and dodgy software 😀] and costs less. OK, no digital mirrors. The one I'm currently looking forward to seeing is the new MG4 EV. A shade under £26K for 200 mile range.
A hot hatch for the hottest day but at a too-hot-to-handle price! 😁 To help with the "static 2D" digital side mirrors that lack depth perception, if Honda adds "blind spot indicators" (like in the MG ZS EV, and other cars) to the side mirrors, that would aid the the driver in terms of gauging how far away cars are. 👍
The screens do visually warn you when someone is in Your blind spot (although they actually have 100% coverage). And it beeps if you indicate at that point.
The Honda e has many plus points: Looks, build, refinement, turning circle etc. But when we test drove one 2 years ago on a warm day (25 degC) efficiency was poor, boot was tiny, no frunk, and it did not feel RWD and not that much fun to drive. Oh, and Honda quoted 100kW charge speeds but real world is barely 40kW! It has been a sales flop as hardly seen any in the real world and it is now other-worldly expensive.Almost £40k?! You would be utterly mad to buy one. OK on PCP etc and give it back after 2 years may be. Drop the price and put a 50kWh battery in one and it would be an interesting option.
@@GlennBroadway Plus when you bought it the price was about £28k with grant etc. Just about understandable at that price point. Just. But the EV game has moved on in leaps & bounds. It is almost as if Honda don’t want it to sell now. MM
The tiny range of this car compared to similarly priced competition makes this car totally useless. People at Honda simply did not use their brains. With the mini electric perhaps even worse. We went with Fiat 500e at the end of the day and best decision - fantastic build quality and easily achieve 200 miles per charge in city driving conditions and around 170 on the motorway at 60mps average motorway speed. For less money and arguably better build and much better looking car. But it is the 500e range compared with the other two mentioned that truly kills them.
Shameful efficiency and the reason why Honda is in trouble. Something of this size & weight really should do better than ~40% WORSE than a bigger, longer range, faster Model 3. It's a total shame because this is such a wonderful piece of design & the right size but woeful as an EV. Almost like Honda designed everything except the 'E' part well.
Always enjoy your videos but driving in flip flops is like watching kids running around a swimming pool on wet tiles. If you have an accident, fault or not your insurance company may well decline your claim.
Cute little car until you mentioned the £36k price, I looked it up just incase you meant £26k but you were correct. To me that’s utterly ridiculous, £36k for a 100 miles range..real world. Can you imagine if Honda, Hyundai etc come out with a little petrol engined car that had a 2 gallon tank giving you a range of 100 miles and took best part of an hour to replenish the 2 gallons….costing £36k, they’d be ridiculed beyond belief. It seems common sense goes out the window when we start talking about some EVs.
We need Hyundai to produce a car this size. Not necessarily more range, but more efficient & faster charging (as per their other cars) for when you do need to do that odd longer journey. Oh, and cheaper!
Great vid! CDA is the important figure of the brave new world it seems… also only Tesla really gets this? Are the other OEMs driven by design and brand first vs CDA and range? I guess with ICE cars you can just whack in another 10l of tank at the 11th hour of the design process ..?? I feel like there is all this legacy stuff that dictates the style of the car and whacks up the CDA value with these ICE OEMs… fascinating to see… why has no one just simply ripped off the shape of the 3 or S I wonder…
One of the coldest summers I remember! Everybody must have bought electric cars using your logic Richard 😂😂😂 or people are really in to child slave labour for some wonderful Colbalt.
£35k for a small hatchback that will only do 100 miles? Seems Honda are about 10 years behind the curve. Seems comparable with the original Nissan Leaf. Honda need to find a way of making the car less expensive and at least doubling the range, to compete with any of the rather more compelling small EVs now available!
We've got one. Range is perfect for a second 'city' car. Best looking EV on the market by miles and gets admiring looks whereever it's driven. Cost is subjective.
Such a fantastic little car and WAAAY overpriced, fiat 500e starts under £22,000!! Find some suitable driving shoes, driving in flip flops is dangerous and irresponsible. In the next video... Running with scissors??
Price is too high and efficiency is just too low. Shouldn't be using more KWs/mile than a large family saloon when it's a small city hatch. I think Honda tried to cram too much tech into it and those computers are sapping energy away from driving about. Fine for purely London driving or any urban driving, but from experience with EVs this would be a killer on an important drive like trying to catch a flight at Heathrow where it's over 100 miles to get there and you don't want to leave it empty while parked. The price is a big problem too, it's £38k and no amount of kit justifies that for a 35KW pack. It's only £4k less than a Model 3 SR+ which goes almost 300 miles and has way more advanced autopilot features and tech in general. I mean, actually from inventory right now, there's Model 3s around £38.5k as they prepare for the updated 2024 model. With being the case, this is an instant no from me. +efficiency +battery pack size to closer to 40KW -the cluttered tech dashboard -£££ and they have a winner here though. Bring on the Mark II!
Why is it that I charged my i3s on that very day at 39c and got 49kw up to 84% before tailing of gradually to 95% before falling of a cliff in 35 minutes. The battery temp was 36c must be the liquid cooling on the i3s is more efficient than on most cars I see reviewed? Conversely in winter I still get around 46kw to 82% when ioniq 5 owners are crying Foul getting 26%
Proof positive that Honda really really hates Electric cars. Whilst cute, the price, the range, the inefficiency, mediocre charging ..... the perfect city car?, except in the city you really be using Public Transport. A joke, quite literally at your expense. If you have to BMW i3 instead.
You were doing so well until you started talking nonsense about why people are still buying ICE cars. It takes 9 years before your electric car is CO2 positive and then it will need new batteries.
This is a car in the category "BEV I would love to buy my wife". But it's quite the worst car in terms of electric parameters. Fiat 500e, Mini Cooper, Opel Corsa-e are all way better in terms of range. And this matters, because wifey wants to visit her friends and family sometimes who live far away. And she can do it very easily with every small ICE city car.
It's not retro - watch here: th-cam.com/video/iere3DPQhkg/w-d-xo.html And driving in flip-flops should be banned. You need proper shoes to apply the necessary force on the breakpedal just in case.
Honda stopped production as it was a almighty FLOP. Sold 12000 in 3 years 😢😢. Body design by a budding 5year old. 😅😅😅😅. Lousy lousy range with no claim being a hot hatch. Then the silly extortionete price asked . Complete flop ,stupid honda . Probably ended costing Honda 200, 000 pounds per car sold . They now know at honda the e title really meant e for e mbarrassment 😂😂😂😂😂
Not really a shocker that Honda built an overpriced mediocre EV. Their ICE vehicles are way more profitable for them. Plus their dealers are less enthusiastic about selling EVs because they require less service and maintenance compared to ICE vehicles.

What do you mean mirrors are okay?
Shameful efficiency and the reason why Honda is in trouble. Something of this size & weight really should do better than ~40% WORSE than a bigger, longer range, faster Model 3.
It's a total shame because this is such a wonderful piece of design & the right size but woeful as an EV. Almost like Honda designed everything except the 'E' part well.
Always enjoy your videos but driving in flip flops is like watching kids running around a swimming pool on wet tiles. If you have an accident, fault or not your insurance company may well decline your claim.
What if he has slipped them off and driven barefoot? How could barefoot be a problem? It was very hot that day for them...
UK law makers asleep at the wheel (again). In Brasil driving in flip flops has been outlawed for decades.
Perfectly legal in Australia to my knowledge
@@martalli it would have been much better if he had taken off his flip flops, and drove barefoot. I always prefer to drive barefoot.
It’s called the cycluses of the earth, been like this for millions of years…
Cute little car until you mentioned the £36k price, I looked it up just incase you meant £26k but you were correct.
Lol….. it’s a very first ev and definitely a limited production
We need Hyundai to produce a car this size. Not necessarily more range, but more efficient & faster charging (as per their other cars) for when you do need to do that odd longer journey. Oh, and cheaper!
I always want to know exactly how autosteer compares to my Tesla.
Temperature for test likely advantage
Jonny Said once it has a proper Japanese overload with the screens
No I don’t want to swap.
Great vid! CDA is the important figure of the brave new world it seems… also only Tesla really gets this? Are the other OEMs driven by design and brand first vs CDA and range? I guess with ICE cars you can just whack in another 10l of tank at the 11th hour of the design process ..?? I feel like there is all this legacy stuff that dictates the style of the car and whacks up the CDA value with these ICE OEMs… fascinating to see… why has no one just simply ripped off the shape of the 3 or S I wonder…
seeing you using that infotainment system gives me nightmares and I am happy to drive a tesla 🤣
One of the coldest summers I remember! Everybody must have bought electric cars using your logic Richard 😂😂😂 or people are really in to child slave labour for some wonderful Colbalt.
That car is bloody awful. Appreciate the video as always Rich, thx 👍🏻
Just released another video driving in convoy with mini and i3 so a direct comparison for range
@@RSEV yeh it’s on my list now thx 👍🏻🙂 am working my way through some. Ha.
Expensive , since the grant gone , only a fool would buy this
Such a fantastic little car and WAAAY overpriced, fiat 500e starts under £22,000!! Find some suitable driving shoes, driving in flip flops is dangerous and irresponsible. In the next video... Running with scissors??
Hhm. £36,000 for a city car. Electric seems to be at quite a premium for something that looks like a Micra K11 gone wrong.
36k for an 100 miles no thanks stick to petrol
Heat and ac and highway are huge factors I think because Electrobays got 17km per 1kW hour (10miles) at abt 25degs incl some highway
For a ground up ev with no mirrors efficiency hopeless , winter you will find it’s a joke, likely the worse on the market, another Japanese mistake
Ignore South Mimms... absolutely pointless ... even if you get a free charger. Best to go to Junction 22 and stop at the Instavolt chargers.
+efficiency
+battery pack size to closer to 40KW
-the cluttered tech dashboard
-£££
and they have a winner here though.
OUCH!
Perspective 😉
Proof positive that Honda really really hates Electric cars. Whilst cute, the price, the range, the inefficiency, mediocre charging ..... the perfect city car?, except in the city you really be using Public Transport. A joke, quite literally at your expense. If you have to BMW i3 instead.
You were doing so well until you started talking nonsense about why people are still buying ICE cars. It takes 9 years before your electric car is CO2 positive and then it will need new batteries.
Not true…
Co2 positive… wow that would be clever…. 🙄
@@RSEV I mean before the co2 used in the production becomes a benefit when compared to an ICE.
You drove in flip flops????
the climate rant was stupid, no problem though you'll get it right one day
poor value....remember if you don't want public charging hassle the range is 45 miles
5:55
Of course, driving in Flip Flops should now be considered as against the law, along with boots and high heels etc.
👍
I will not buy a car that gives me a disclaimer (or whatever you call it) every time I enter it. Feels like those annoying cookie accept boxes. 😀
Again this is a compliance car for Honda. It feels like and EV killer to drive people to ICE vehicles. It is very oddly designed.
It's not real world load it up with the family and baggage then see how far you get
It's not retro - watch here: th-cam.com/video/iere3DPQhkg/w-d-xo.html
And driving in flip-flops should be banned.
No noise no smell electric cars are a joke.
Not really a shocker that Honda built an overpriced mediocre EV. Their ICE vehicles are way more profitable for them. Plus their dealers are less enthusiastic about selling EVs because they require less service and maintenance compared to ICE vehicles.
City car means shit range , made up name for evs with crap range . Most expensive late to market ev . Price just ridiculous for a newish motor
Hello mate
blaming the heat on petrol cars, joker
Nice car ,crap review .
Honda fucking shit.
Such eloquence.
Don't you just love constructive criticism!
