This is how it starts. Chiefs beat the blues, highlanders beat the crusaders, the dead rise from their graves, human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together. Mass hysteria!!
What a win for the Highlanders this was. That was a tactical masterpiece from Tony Brown, the defence was suffocating, the discipline was excellent and the ball carrying was really aggressive and confrontational. Add to that the dominance of the breakdown and the control from 9 and 10 and it was a virtually perfect performance. The Crusaders are a great team but they were comprehensively outplayed and out-thought on the day. It’s been a long time since the Crusaders were dominated like that in Christchurch, it just doesn’t happen.
Best game of the year. And best refereeing performance of the year so far too. Highlanders have shown the blueprint in how to beat the Crusaders. It's a huge achievement to beat them anywhere, anytime, but they beat a team stacked full of test-level players on their home ground, with a mixed-up no-frills squad currently dealing with injuries and home detention. Hunt, Fakatava, Himeno, Frizzell, Dixon, Garden-Bachop, and Umaga-Jensen were amazing. This game reminded me of the NZ vs England 2019 world cup semi-final.
Best refereeing? Questionable lengths of advantages given to Crusaders, while the Highlanders advantage was over following two passes. Cody Taylor's try deserved a more thorough look as it looked for sure short of the line. Paul Williams missed a foot in touch. Mike Frazier isn't a good referee at all and looked bewildered having to penalise the Crusaders. It is good to see the Crusaders pinged for the usual penalties that Williams would let them get away with

Every other game has had rubbish refs, so the bar was extremely low, and this game exceeded that bar. Other than Will Jordan not getting sin binned for a tackle in the air, the ref was fine and allowed the game to flow and as a neutral fan, he seemed to pull up both teams fairly. What's up with that??? Where's the consistency? It was great seeing Joe Moody finally pinged for pancaking and angling in at scrum time, whereas he is notorious for getting away with it. And he Cody Taylor try definitely needed a better review. He was clearly short. Why are the Crusaders always gifted these minor advantages? Why is it only now that teams and referees are catching up and now penalizing them? Why are refs very hesitant to send a Crusader to the bin after multiple penalties? Is it good coaching? Tactics? Captain talking to refs? Good to see them reeled in and out under the pump when they assume they'll breeze another win!
Great to see this, Crusaders are an incredible team and worthy champions for the last few seasons but it’s heartening to see a derby win like this as it shows they can be beaten
the crusaders play like the all blacks - always have done, highlanders played like england, big hits, rush defence and not allowing running ball - perfect example of pressure, most teams drop off around that 50-60min mark and the allblacks/crusaders just steam roll but if the pressure stays on they just cant do anything.

What was up with the tackle in the air penalty in the few minutes? My understanding is that yes Gregory impeded Jordan (1st foul) and then Jordan took out Garden-Bashop in the air (2nd foul). Doesn't it always get reversed from 1st foul to 2nd foul. Just like how kurt eklund threw reece over 2 weeks ago, crusaders got the penalty reversed when the blues already had the penalty. So inconsistent.

I doubt the Saders assumed anything. They didn't go undefeated for so long assuming the other team would be easy, or would play the same as their last encounter. They just weren't prepared for what the Landers brought to the table - particularly the new players who replaced the usual (partyboy) starters. I have a feeling that Skudder has had a major influence at training too.

Actually thought Fakatavas sharp accuracy and decisiveness helped keep Highlanders monentum. Not quite as fast at passing as Smith but his decision making is absolutely sublime.
It was Fakatava's ball retention that kept us alive through the first 50 minutes. If Azza was on he would've undoubtedly kicked the ball away far too often and the Saders would have scored repeatedly. In the last 30 min, particularly when we were up in their half and had a comfortable lead, Azza's box kicks worked perfectly for keeping the Saders under pressure.
