      You are truly a lucky man to have been friend with Rocco, once I was at tower of power concert, they played one hour then took a break, Rocco was walking around there, I approached him and said you are the best bass player I ever seen and Rocco very grateful shook my hand and gave me a huge and said thank you brother ……..Rocco was a humble and wonderful person …….. rest in peace…….

    Anybody old enough to remember ordering this vhs from bass player magazine back in ‘98. I waited by the mailbox for days! Still one of the better purchases I’ve made in life.

    Top of their games in '98. The great chops but also the maturity in their approach to the music. Masters.

      @FunkyMonk6 Rocco was, is and always will be a frickin' legend... He had a soft heart with a pretend grumpy exterior... He was always so kind to my mom, all the way to the end. They both left this world within months of each other. At one point his eyes got so bad that he couldn't drive. I would pick him up to see my mom... Then he would offer to buy lunch. But he had to put up with my silly antics of making funny videos. Somewhere I've got a video of us in the car and I panned to him and my phone put a mouse filter on his face! Ha ha! He endured the torture because he knew I did it out of pure love. Now they are together, probably enjoying music in heaven... 🎶

      Great stories. Thanks for that.
      My Mom and Rocco were real close...she was his daughter.
      Different Rocco. This one was a Fedele from Italy. What a bass player yours was.
      Mine had an Oakland dairy farm during the depression and my aunt helped deliver hks milk as a kid.
      Farms...in Oakland? yep..near the Estuary. Im sure this one was with T.O.P. during East Bay Grease days? What a great band. I had all rheir records.

      Garibaldi (drums) + Prestia (Bass) + Conte (guitar) = The Tower of Power Sound. Punto, y aparte. Oops, forgot to mention, CT... Chester Thompson. It's what gave them the soul. And, definitely, Emilio Castillo, without a doubt. Just so glad they gifted the world with the music they have.

      Yes! Yes, yes, yes!! The unofficial Raider Theme. Oakland Stroke should be played still in LV when the team comes out, History is Company. And, Marv Hubbard, Hewritt Dixon, Lamonica, Fred Biletnikoff (hall of fame), Plunkett, Howie Long (hall of fame), Kasper (hall of fame), Christensen... etc. "George Blanda has just been elected King of the World."

      I'm definitely not a bass guy, but what I did notice as a musician is that during Oakland Stroke (the first) that he played with his fingers below the part of the bass where players usually play. Can you help me understand that part? ) serious question

    Very good musicians and top bass player. The main problem is they didn't have good songs, I mean "real songs" with strong melody ( cf : EWF ...)

    • @BassByTheBay
      @BassByTheBay 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Totally agree. I'm a lifelong funkateer, and when I'm occasionally asked why ToP isn't among my favorite funk bands, I simply say it's because of the songs. They were/are absolutely world-class musicians, but most of the songs aren't very memorable.

      @@speedlite01 Like I said, _most_ songs. But even those two aren't particularly memorable in that they don't have a singable hook (this is reflected by their low chart position). To my ear, their hookiest melody was "You're Still A Young Man", but they only have one song that ever cracked the top 20 ("So Very Hard To Go"). Memorable melodies just weren't their thing, and that's ok because their grooves were great ("Down To The Nightclub" is my favorite).
