      The funky new designs really appeal to me - the look of the show overall is great. Emphasizing the spiritual/philosophical themes make it distinct from Beast Wars in ways that both hurt and help it. Storytelling-wise, there are some major missteps but it's still pretty interesting/entertaining overall.

    The thing that always struck me rewatching this show as an adult, is the complexity of Depth Charge and Rampage's final battle. When I was a kid, I never understood why Rampage let go and stopped trying to stop Depth Charge from killing him. But the reason is...He won. Depth Charge was so consumed by hatred that he had become a monster himself, and in that sense Rampage had gotten what he wanted. So he just lets himself be destroyed, laughing maniacally. Stuff like that is why this show will always be a classic.

    I've always had a theory that the Vok were inserted by the writers to represent "Hasbro". For one thing, they're always screwing with the protagonists, their characterization varies depending on the season, they create the overpowered Tigerhawk only to barely do anything with him, and they're killed off with very little fanfare. To me, I feel like they were Mainframe's attempt to poke fun at Habsro's creative insanity when it came to this series.

    It's funny how Airrazor and Tigertron had little impact in North America but how these minor sidelined characters actually forced the Japanese distributors of the show to explain LGBT relationships. You see in Japan Airrazor is Male due to them not wanting girls on their show for younger boys (Cooties I'm assuming) but by the end of the show there is no getting around that the two have a romantic relationship. In the west it's no big deal since it's a minor romance, but Since Airrazor is Male overseas...well you get the picture.

      Interesting fact. I only remember how they changed some of the characters' gender in the North American dub of Sailor Moon (e.g. Zoisite to a female to avoid depiction of Zoisite and Kunzite in a homosexual relationship as in the Japanese version). So I do wonder why there was a bigger outrage with japanese Beast Wars compared to Sailor Moon. Edit: perhaps it has something to do with the characters being villains instead of heroes, after all they kinda pulled the same thing with Reboot, where more villainous characters like Hexadecimal and Mouse were OK to be very sexual)

    I think Dinobot 2 was the only transmetal 2 look that I liked out of the new cast. All the designs felt too busy and the asymmetrical for the sake of it concept is not something I cared much for. Airazor is like Zelda from Twilight Princess. Both are interesting concepts for characters, but unfortunately they lacked depth due to little screentime. Like, the idea of a Zelda who is really mournful and remorse filled princess when captured who turns into a badass who actually helps Link after seeing his bravery and selflessness is a great concept, unfortunately she was in the game like 3 times, and airazor is a confident and sort of sassy character who's also really kind and the bridge between the maximals and tigatron, which is a fun character, but once again she wasn't in the show often enough and even when she was, didn't do much.

    my theory is the shell program was a creation by Tarantulus to prevent protoforms from returning to Maximal origins. Dinobot wouldn't have it since he was Predacon "naturally" as natural as a robot can, and not tampered with. Blackarachnia is essentially still herself she just doesn't have random bouts of negativity. It always seemed that her desire to be Predacon was a tad unnatural as she doesn't really like ANY of them. Literally She can''t stand them. From Waspinator's annoyance and later crush, to Tarantulas's mind games, to Megatron's foolishness and ego, to Quickstrike's possessiveness (though not as possessive as Tarantulas) They drive her nuts.

    • @KairuHakubi
      @KairuHakubi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That makes so much sense. BA is the first recipient of one of those programs, and Tarantulas clearly wanted to make a mate for himself, so of course he'd try to program in some inherent longing to remain on his side.. and then by the end he's not even really a predacon (or even alive) anymore, so whatever lingering hold is there is reduced to just clinging to the artificial program.
      Also I just now realized that Inferno is the only other guy to actually receive a shell program, despite Tarantulas having them at the ready every time a pod fell. It FELT like a bunch more got used, but the rest of the new preds just got pressed into service. And Inferno sure did end up loyal, although he's so scrambled it's hard to tell what the program contributed.

    Actually, the reason why they couldn't do that to Dinobot was because of the difference in Dinobot and Blackarachnia's circumstances. Dinobot was made a Predacon from the start. There was no shell program that made him one, he just was. It was a part of his code, his programming, and couldn't simply be undone. Blackarachnia, however, was a Maximal protoform, originally with Maximal programming. Now instead of simply completely overwriting said programming like with Inferno, Tarantulas instead installed a shell program, which overlapped Blackarachnia's core Maximal programming with her Predacon programming. As such, it is much simpler to make her a Maximal by simply removing the shell programming. As for finding her disappointing, I honestly would disagree. While original Blackarachnia is a very interesting and complicated character, due to her conflicting nature between her Predacon nature and the new Maximal traits gained from exposure to Silverbolt and the others, it also got tiring seeing what essentially was the same inter character conflicts that plagued Dinobot, considering we already had seen it. Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia honestly felt like an improvement, as she was still largely herself, just no longer selfish and cynical but warmer and more playful. It felt like what Blackarachnia would be like without the Predacon traits. *Shrugs* I might be alone in the opinion, but I do think she was better as a Transmetal 2, and it annoys me that her new self had so few episodes.

    I feel you missed the whole story of Black A vs Dinobot. Dino changed
    his allegiance of his own accord, where as Black didnt. Black was afraid
    of losing who she was and is why she didnt want the shell removed.
    Like Dino she could have changed sides at anytime but once the shell was
    damaged and had to be removed she was reluctant because she know once
    remove she return to her default state, which as a Maximal but she didnt
    know if her personally would remain. She was reprogrammed to be a pred
    but didnt know if it was just her allegiance that was hacked or if her
    personality was also part of the shell too. That is why there is a vast
    difference in her story vs Dinobot. Dino choose his role. Black was
    signed one via hack and didnt know how deep it was.

    Even as late as it comes, I love the Feral Scream episodes, and the way Cheetor's transformation is handled, being treated almost like a werewolf kinda thing. And the fact that it does solidify that Cheetor is growing up over the course of the series, something that will continue in Beast Machines.
    Honestly, I understand and accept that Beast Machines was not as good as Beast Wars, but I still enjoyed it, and I don't think it deserves the demonization people give it - sure, some characters' ended up a bit differently than people expected, but it wasn't exactly unjustified. All the huge character personality shifts are entirely defendable within the context of what's happening to them in the show.

Japanese names for shows are weird) is a show that I watched a bit of. I have to agree with the Maximals, those Transmetal 2 designs were so ugly! The return of the goofy humor really didn't work for me either in season 3. If only we'd gotten that Dark Glass episode. I'd love it if it was made into a direct to DVD movie or something. Instead we got yet another goofy filler episode with the Preds acting like fools and the Maximals saving the kiddies again. I also wish Inferno and Tarantulus had stayed dead after the end of season 23 as both characters were given little to do in season 3. As funny as Inferno was in seasons 1 and 2 he was also pretty bad ass in a fight but by season 3 he was barely above Waspinator.

      For Megatron TM2 is better than the TM form but I am not sure I like it more than his original beast form. The beast T-Rex mode was awesome, but that dragon mode was really bad-ass. So I would call it a tie.

    This season was clearly the victim of Hasbro interference. Tarantulas, the Vok, Megatron & others were clearly being set up for much darker arcs.
    As for the Driver, I think that was fairly alright as the macguffin. Megatron already had a stash of alien trinkets alongside the Alien Disk in the first two Seasons, so it makes sense that he would have something like this. As for its upgrading/resurrection powers being ‘silly’, I don’t see how it’s any more ridiculous than the Planet Buster’s quantum surge. These pieces of tech aren’t meant to do what they do to Transformers, it’s simply a coincidence that they do (to sell toys).
    As for Blackarachnia, I think her arc was fucking awful. She should have died in Crossing The Rubicon. Not in the operating table (though that scene should’ve been kept), she still should’ve shot Rampage to save Silverbolt & then died in his arms.
    Cheetor’s arc was awful. Hands down.

      I think it had a lot to do with cost. Back in the 90s right up to the mid 00s, CG was infinitely more expensive than traditional forms of media due to the primitive nature of the medium. To an extent it still is, Star Wars The Clone Wars in particular had a budget of well over £1m per episode. Mainframe’s reputation for completely computer generated shows, alongside the sheer cost of ReBoot & Beast Wars, despite their runaway success, probably made funding them a risky venture. You could sink millions in & then the show might flop.
      It also has to do with changing media landscapes. Around the time after Beast Machines, more mature shows like Beast Wars or ReBoot just didn’t have the same sort of cultural impact. To an extent I believe Beast Machines to be responsible for that. The last vestige of that era I remember is Code Lyoko, which was hurriedly wrapped up in its 4th season. Since the mid to late 00s, children’s media has predominantly been centred around goofy, completely lighthearted shows that don’t colour too much outside the lines. Even praised shows like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls etc feel much more restricted in what they can show than Beast Wars. Were Beast Wars to launch today, with updated visuals & sound design, I doubt it would’ve been as successful as it was in the 90s.

    I can still remember watching season 3 on TV when it first premiered. Beast Wars was still in syndication at the time, but by the end of the season 3, the TV rights were purchased by Fox Kids. Beast Wars reruns then aired exclusively on Fox Kids, and this is when the Beast Wars censorship took place. The planning and designs for Beast Machines had to be cleared by Fox's BSNP, which steered the plot and fighting quite a bit (such as Tankor having a physical missile launcher count on his internal displays, but being unable to launch them).
    Despite the odd character personality changes and broadcast standards, Beast Machines did get strangely dark at times. I watched it enthusiastically as a kid, but did feel kinda cheated by the ending, and how it affected Transformers mythos. Rewatching it as an adult on the DVD releases, I felt it held up a little bit better than I remembered, but I still cursed it as being an inferior follow up to Beast Wars, especially since it so drastically altered the cast we came to know and love. Had the concept of Beast Machines been done with an entirely new cast, perhaps we'd view it differently.

    • @BullSession

    I always even as a kid took Megatron's line as an insult to Tarantulas but I do like it being why he wasn't worried about paradoxes. Yeah I actually felt that if they left Blackarachnia dead it would have been stronger impact and the shell program makes sense but the series much like other series with sentient robots they aren't sure where the level of tech goes in terms of free will. I like to think of the Japanese Beast Wars as the answer to Saban's version of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee aka Samurai Pizza Cats. Over all I felt season 3 was the best in terms of humour but nothing will match seasons 2's amazing depth of characters. Going to miss your retrospective almost as much as the show. Good humour and wonderful use of interviews. Yeah I ended up hated Beast Machines. The only character I liked from BM was Megatron right around the time the show came out I was growing allergic to nature like tress and grass [still am] so the idea of a purely metal world away from the green made Megatron a hero to me.....but he did pretty much rip souls out so yeah not really able to like anyone in BM.

    I assumed Megatron got the drive, off screen, during the two part Other Voices when he got control of the Vok's ship possibly during the downtime Primal was knocked out and Rattrap was making it back to base with Tarantulas. and knowing Megatron he probably kept it unused until he could figure out how to make it work, plus given that he was preparing for Cybertron to send someone during the events of Agenda it's not to hard to believe he prioritized dealing with THAT issue before figuring out how to make the transmetal driver work. Which, after the events of the Agenda and Optimal situation he finally had time to work on and experiment which lead to the cyber raptors and eventually to Dinobot 2

    Beast Wars season 3 is alright but must other maximal characters have to die at the end of the two part episodes finale😥 and they still haven't bother to find all the Statis Podsthat has landed/ crash on earth since the last episode from season 1. Yet none of the Maximal and Predacons try to find where they all are since Tigertron and Airazor were kidnapped from the Alien since then from season 2?🤔

    Gotta say, I wish that "girls only club" episode had gotten made. Not for girl-power clichés or anything like that, but because I find it odd that the only two female characters in the show rarely, if ever, interacted with each other.

    Wait wait wait...Cheetor had somewhat of a love triangle thing with Blackarachnia and Silverbolt? How do I not remember this....I do remember Cheetor getting on my nerves alot and Dinobot & Rattrap being my favorites. Up until Beast Machines where Cheetor was my favorite due to his unique and sleek design.

    Kids wouldn’t be scared if Dark Glass was made, I mean ‘not enough action’ they can have Megatron and his group attacking Rattrap for reprogramming Dinobot 2, And near the end of the Ep, Before Rattrap can do so after putting him down Dinobot 2 destroys it ending the episode in a sad note, & Maybe a message for kids, Sometimes you could never have what you wanted.

    I can't say I hated it but it definitely was a letdown after Beast Wars. Some of the character twists were completely out of left field and seemingly done just for shock value. And although I appreciate the idea of merging the technological and the organic it was pretty mediocre in its execution in my opinion

    • @tsukopara2054
      @tsukopara2054 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheThoughtful Critic I’d agree.
      Beast Machines is, to me, the cartoon equivalent of The Last Jedi. Technically it’s a well made show, it subverts your expectations, it greatly changes characters through darker events than their pasts, but it just isn’t satisfying because it’s all done purely for the shock value. Difference for the sake of difference rather than any story development.

    So you are doing Beast Machines next? Cool, I look forward to it. As a kid I didn't like Beast Machines much. I found the character designs a bit ugly and without the comedy I grew bored from the complete serious tone. However that was when I was a kid. Now as an adult I can appreciate what they were going for. While I still don't agree on some of the decisions made for the show I have found that I can enjoy the show.
    I didn't like them making Rhinox evil, I hated that they took away Waspinator's happy ending, I didn't like the designs of the Maximals but I did like the desings of the Vehicons. I also didn't like how Megatron acted, he almost felt like a different character. However I decided to chalk that up to Megatron going insane and it did make him an extremely dangerous villain. (He took over Cybertron basically on his own.)
    What I did like was that the show took place entirely on Cybertron and was a dark and serious series. I originally didn't care for it but now I like it. I kind of wish it did well enough as I am certain Hasbro had wanted, especially now after I had learned about the original plans for a sequel series to Beast Machines called TransTech. I wonder how that show would have been like if it got made.
    Speaking of Beast Machines and what if it had succeeded. You know how we haven't really gotten a Transformers series set entirely on Cybertron instead of earth? I always see fans ask why we never get something like that and I am certain the answer has something to do with Beast Machines failing
    (I know there is the three web series combiner wars, titans return and power of the prime with Optimus Primal returning in the third series but while all three of those web series took place on Cybertron none where considered that good. Funny that every time transformers gets set on Cybertron the series isn't liked and fails.)

    • @BullSession
      @BullSession  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point. I dunno if its a correlation or just a coincidence... I've always prefered versions of Transformers that take place mostly off Earth (I include Beast Wars in that)

    Awesome. A time for season 3, as my Rebels season 3 dvd arrived yesterday. Starries and Beasties received by generations of fans very similar.
    Megz having the use of the Nemesis, and his disposal of Inferno and Quickstrike( reminiscent of the Ewoks and the Storm Trooper heads) laid seeds for Beastmachines. Dinobot's betrayal/saving the Maximals and Autobots must really have changed his mind, as he had just mentioned a glorious era of Predacon rule. Wondered if Blackarachnia didn't touch the conduit/Rattraps tail. could the arc have flown again.
    The video's really cool man. Cracked up at Prime saying boobies and 'now those are what I call' boobies. Reminds me of Kickback going take that, Autobot booby.

      Clonies :D Very like the reception to Star wars Prequels after the orig trig ( Mr Sunday) and Transformers sequels. Rebels tried to pick up Clone Wars and Darth Maul which I liked, as Beast Wars revived G1 plot, characters, Starscream covert agent Ravage, ojimoi. I asked my family is that transformer speaking Russian and they told me you can't tell the accent, glad I'm not alone.
      Thought Beastwars was dead, jumped ship from Transformers quick enough, they just wern't available here in Ireland
