As a solo female home owner of a 50-year old home I inherited without a mortgage but in a state of disrepair, it's inspiring to see your building videos. Sometimes there are so many repairs to do I just want to sell and go rent an apartment in the city, but no, I'm going to DIY it step by step. The quiet of not having a neighbor right behind a wall is priceless.
Post an ad in your local Tapinto (your town) for help with repairs, but first check with your local government as many provide referrals for such services. Gl.
I'm a few years away from 50 and learn things everyday. You're doing it right...step by step. Make sure you have enough money for the project, make sure you prioritize all your projects based on your needs. My best advice is for you to NOT ever be worried about making a mistake cause if you never try you'll never know if you could have done it. just don't practice your craft on things like waterproofing, roofing etc. Plus don't forget that some things you just won't be able to do by yourself...be careful with electrical and plumbing as you really need to know what you're doing. Best of luck, TH-cam is a great source of info but be aware that most creators are not pros they want views.
Go Chad! Not even old man winter can stop you!👍 It's good to see that I'm not the only with too much STUFF! It's a challenge but you can do it!👏👏 Make sure it's fine right because you do have a bunch of tough inspectors, Molly, Olive and yes, the claw crew.😻👏👏👏🤩
You have the boards up already, on that building, could you add battens? That would make it much more weatherproof. I think getting a sawmill is a great idea, and would be a good investment, especially with all the construction I am sure you are going to do in the future.😁😁. I love that log splitter! When I think about all the times I had to split logs by hand, and the occasional blisters!
Greetings 💞Somehow it’s so satisfying watching someone working so hard. It’s not work I would be able to do at this point of my life, but I think it’s great you’re young enough and strong to do it. 👍
I love watching your videos and seeing what's happening on your beautiful farm.. And more storage space is always a plus! I noticed you have cat carriers on some of your shelves. I learned a tip years ago of using them as extra cat beds with the door left open (or removed if possible - mine has a removable top) and a cozy plush blanket inside. My cat often sleeps in his, and because he's used to the carrier being around his space he doesn't stress during trips to the vet. Anyway, I don't know if it'll work for your setup, but I thought I'd suggest it as those carriers can take up storage room when they could potentially be used as extra beds, and for free if you already have spare blankets.
I did use the carriers for that purpose at one time when we had two cats, now there are 7 and I don’t think I want them all over the cat house. What I do is a week before a vet visit I’ll put the carriers in with them so they don’t get freaked out when it’s time. They’re up high on the shelf not really affecting the equipment area too.
Could you put up battens on the barn and then some sort of edging at the bottom . I know you still need more room, but it may help with snow and rain . 💕🎶
It is so nice to see someone make a proper undercut so the tree will fall the right way with out ropes. There’s a lot of homesteaders that only undercut 25% when you should undercut 40%. You use a rope when you are close to buildings or push with a tractor.
It’s nearly midnight here in eastern Australia & I really enjoy your videos plus the stories you tell, not to mention your beautiful kitty cats & the rest of the animal gang.
Check through the bins and get rid of stuff you'll never use and maybe wont need more room. But alot of equipment is needed to be self sufficient for sure. 😅
Watching all the things you’ve built for your homestead is just incredible! Really inspires and also helps teach me how and what to build for mine! Thank you for sharing :)
I enjoy watching this video. The saw blade is awesome. I like it's strength. You're very organized. The log's are stacked up neatly. Thanks for sharing 😊
My Stihl 250 has so much compression I can’t hardly pull it! Then again I’m getting old a decrepit. Lol! Looks like your keeping your saws pretty sharp!
Doesn't the 250 have a decompression valve? This ms 362 has no trouble starting but it doesn't have a valve it just pulls nice and easy. Same as my ms 170 and ms 500i.
Yay. Timber indeed. I love watching videos of simplicity yet coupled with simple pleasures. And hey resourcefulness is truly in the mix so kudos to a great job here. Plus it truly came at a great time in March because I’m definitely an El Marzo cheapo
Chad, would it be possible to build upwards on the existing structure? But I guess you would need reinforcements so the upper floor wouldn’t fall onto the lawn machinery. If there were a second floor you could store the bins etc. A second thought would be to get a quansa hut, (spelling?) heat it, wet it, power it and include fire and intrusion detection since you have a collection of pricey equipment. While not nice looking these structures come in different sq. ft and you can frame the outside with your wood boards. Consider this if you see larger machinery, (like a bigger John Deere!) for the farm or even if larger machinery is going to lessen your work load and your time, which is so valuable. I love your vids and vlogs! And I just love Olive! And Mr. or Mrs. Bubbles and Molly too and your beautiful wife. I would love stay at your B and B! Keep making those videos! You are a real cat whisperer ❤
This structure is most likely over 100 years old, I mean they used whole logs as roof rafters. I don't think I'd want to build it up with a mezzanine or anything although I could build some storage shelving up there, but I do want to make it so it will last another 100 years. I wish I could concrete the floor, maybe one day. Quonset huts are fine but I'd have to buy it which I don't want to do and probably require some kind of slab, I'd rather invest in a sawmill so I can continuously make my own lumber. If ever we get to the point where we need larger equipment then it's something I'll address for sure. There are Quonset manufacturers in Canada too so that would be an option. Bubbles is a girl by the way, she's the sister of Mango & Tango and Maggie is their Mama.
The first video I have watched from your channel was the Building the Ultimate Catio for your Barn Cats because I have cats and hoping to get ideas from you. Next thing I know, I am binge watching your videos. Love seeing your farm and animals, and of course you and kabayan Darling. Hope to visit your farm this summer (if it’s still not fully booked yet). Best wishes. Keep your videos coming!!!! 😂
aww Nice glad you're enjoying. Actually the farmhouse is not fully booked at all so if you're interested in looking into it I have a link in the channel page or you can always email me. So much more planned for the property it's gonna be a blast.
the stuff in the bins will be unpacked once I'm ready for it in the new workshop. The lumber and equipment is the real issue, so I'm trying to plan ahead.

@HiddenSpringFarm yes it sure looks that way. We have not had a very good summer here this year. Strong winds and rain. Unlike last year, it was hot and dry. Lots of people buying water. This year the tank has been over flowing. Today was a beautiful sunny day. Be lots of sunburnt people. The weather here is nothing to what it used to be. We used to have four seasons, not so much now. I really like what you have done with your property. You really like your animals to have made their homes to suit them and their needs. My kitten I rescued last year was attacked last week and though he is home with me I am having to tube feed him. Many more trips back to the vets yet to come. Watching what you have done for your cats has been inspirational for me as I will now be building a catio so he can be outside but not be in danger. I live in a caravan and have a container for my crafts. I was just starting to organize the building of a verandah and deck. That will now have to be enclosed, and the addition of the catio. Thank you for showing what and how you do things on your farm. Keep up the great work.

Yes that’s exactly what I’ll do, battens to cover all the gaps and let them get weathered to blend in with the aged patina 😀
Yay! Another building project is on the horizon 🙌

It’s such a pleasure to see the projects coming together, especially because you do everything yourself in such a safe way! C ‘mon spring🍃
There’s been a lot of melting so spring could be closer than what we think. I’m ready for some nicer weather anyway 😀

Yes that’s something I’ll get done when I can make my own lumber, battens wide enough to cover all the gaps.

Try using clear bins to store your items. Therefore you can see what's inside. Just a lil suggestion.
Clear bins are not a solution, more space is.
