July 2023 - Day 1 of our 7 day bicycle ride on the Katy Trail.
My dad and I take a shuttle from St. Charles to Clinton, and we ride our bike about 17 miles from Clinton to Windsor. In Windsor we sleep in a cabin at the Katy-Rock Junction. The heat index was around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and it started to wear us out. However, the cabin was a perfect place to rest, and we slept well.

PLAN YOUR OWN TRIP ON THE KATY. You can do it!
RESOURCES - I have ridden all of the Katy twice and a part of it once, and I have planned all of my own adventures with no problem. These are the resources that I use to plan my trip. With the below listed websites and watching videos like mine on TH-cam I have planned 3 unique trips on the Katy.

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING! If you want to plan your own Katy Trail trip I put useful links in the description. If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments.
What's the shuttle service name?
@@froglegs4910, we booked it through Crossroads Bike Tours. I think they just contract out to Katy Trail Bike Rental because the shuttle looks the same in the pictures for both businesses.
I’m surprised that your dad did not have an e-bike. Respect. (I’m a 59 yo with 5 bikes who has been a cyclist for 30+ years, and when I’m 69, I will be on an e-bike).
I think that may happen in the future. The range has gotten pretty impressive.
This is great encouragement. My husband and I want to do the trail and are a bit older than most of the people in the videos I’ve seen. Your dad is really rockin it, so it gives me hope ;D
Thanks for all the info in the description!
You can do it...for sure. Just break it down into manageable chunks. It will be a blast.
I ride the Katy trail alone every day can only imagine the opportunity to ride with my Dad, such a blessing.
It was. A dream come true!
I cant count how many rides Ive done there. Ive been utilizing sections of it even before it was developed. The politics of it still irk some. Ive know a retired farmer who doesnt even live anywhere near the trail and he acts like its a personal issue for him.
Im glad you and your father had a good time.
We had a blast and thanks for watching. The history of the trail and those who have opposed is interesting. We have the same sort of thing going on here in Kansas with the Flint Hills Trail. It seems there are a lot of hold outs and as the trail is built most people come around.
Nice vid. My wife says the bird at 7:04 is a Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
Oh awesome! I will tell my dad. Tell your wife "Thank You!"
Wow I have never seen so many trees across the trail. Bad timing with that.
I seem to have bad timing. I typically ride the trail in June and July and the weather can be unpredictable. I have crossed down trees on all three of my trips. Two years ago there were downed trees from Machens to Rocheport. 3 years ago there was a flood and plenty of downed trees.
I see your dad's riding the same bike I used on the Katy: sirrus X 4.0, 1 by 11 druvetrain.
Yes! It’s a great bike. Sturdy and light.
I just turn seventy last April and I be on the trail next month.
Fall is definitely the time to be on the Katy. We did this ride in July and the heat index was +100 degrees some days.
@@lindenmoore ouch, yes all my three times on the trail has been during the fall Sep-Oct.
Salud
@@lindenmoore ...I live 40 miles South of Joplin, some 155 from Clinton.
Nice. I wished I lived closer to the Katy. However, I am lucky to have my mom in Rhineland and my brother near St. Louis.
Nice work riding into your 70s!
12:31 very cool!!!! Nice job Jim!!! Need an e-bike!!!
He did an amazing job. We had a blast!
Is this in July? I wonder why so many downed trees?
Yes. It was July. The owner of the Katy-Rock Junction in Windsor said they 30-50 MPH winds a couple days before we were there.
enjoy the time, stay safe.
Xan you tell me about the bikes you used?
Yes. I am riding a Surly Bridge Club. I had 2.35 in hybrid type tires on it. My dad was on a Specialized Sirrus 4.0 with 36(ish)mm tires.
Really nice editing on your video.
Thank you! I enjoy the process. I wish I could spend even more time editing but I need more time for family and cycling haha!
@@lindenmoore Yes 🙂
Please add the month/day date in your heading
It was July 2023.
I added it in the descrition. Thanks!
@@lindenmoore I'm 67, and did a solo ride the week of 6/19-24. I was thinking you did it right after the big storm that went through there in June.
Nice job! No, we were there in July. The owner of the Katy-Rock said that they had insanely high winds a few days before.
Your dad has a real sense of humor. No saw?
No. No saw…yet.
Yeah. My dad was cracking jokes all the way. Watch the next one. He is on fire.
