  • Some scenes from British working men's clubs from the 1970s to 1980s. These clubs are now fast disappearing.

They are almost all closed down now. Every gets pissed alone in front of the TV.

in the 70's I used to frequent Working Men's club in the Woolwich and Plumstead areas of London and full they used to be because bitter beer was cheap compared with pubs and supermarkets were not licensed then. I can recall applying for membership at one where I had to go for an interview but there was an objection because I spoke too posh but I came from a working class family. They were particular who they drank with but I was excepted. I found it easier to join a London gentleman's club!

In them days, if you wanted to mek money, you opened a brewery, pub or a club. Nowdays, if you want to mek money, you open a solicitor's office or buy and sell houses.

Hatleley Health Working Mens club - West Bromwhich - Sadly long gone - good music, decent dancefloor and a long external wall where I'm sure many youngters discovered 'love'. Knocked down in 2009 the site is now several houses with almost nothing on the Internet about the club which is a shame as such clubs always have lots of local characters and stories to tell.

I remember this club. My Grandad used to drink and play dominoes there. I also remember going to some parties I remember the function room being massive. Even then however it was towards the end of its time so wouldn't remember it at it's peak as such.

@@philmuskett265 in Britain, there is definitely fewer working men than in the past. Labourforce participation for men has been declining since the 1970s.
