Toyota RAV4 Plug-in PHEV SUV: In-depth review with Nicki Shields / Electrifying

Think hybrid and you think Toyota. The Japanese brand has built millions of hybrids since its first - the Prius of 1997. However, Toyota has been slow to roll out plug-in hybrids and up to now there's only been the Prius Plug-in for those who want a hybrid that can be charged up by plugging it in.
That's now changed as Toyota has taken its RAV4 SUV family favourite and given it the plug-in treatment. There's a 2.5-litre petrol engine and an 18.1kWh battery, giving it 302bhp. It’ll do 46 miles in pure electric mode and at speeds of up to 84mph, and company car drivers will love the fact it emits just 22g/km of CO2. Toyota even says it’ll do 282mpg (in a laboratory).
It all sounds good but is Toyota a little late to the PHEV SUV party? Nicki Shields finds out.

2024 now, just picked up a new GR Sport phev Rav4. Expensive, yes, but a really awesome car. Watched this review just out of interest, and loved your presentation. Humour, factual, and relaxed style.
Paid $41,000 less $7,500 tax credit $33,500
Still on same tank of gas after 6 months.
Best of both worlds.
Drive in EV 95% of my daily driving but no range anxiety if we go on a long trip.
38 mpg in gasoline hybrid mode.
Not bad and burns rubber acceleration
I wouldn’t leave old fuel in your tank that long... maybe run it down and refill with new fuel soon ??
Failed to mention the 'luxury car tax' which will be £475 for the first five years. Just can't see the point of this. Get yourself a fully electric car that will cost nothing to tax, servicing is much cheaper for obvious reasons.
Another very professional and well presented review N.S. Yes it is expensive and if you like EV's then you can fully electric via numerous cars. However i think if you get range anxiety or you daily commute is slightly longer than the norm or you want an ultra reliable car that will hold its value and run forever with minimum maintenance you should really consider this.
FULL electric is best.
Really depends on the use case, a hydrogen vehicle might be ideal if your daily commute is well inside the battery range but also use your car for once a year summer vacation in Portugal and one a year for a ski holiday in Switzerland. And that really is not a very unlikely scenario.
It’s priced near full electric territory. Hard to justify it , they price is too high for a PHEV
@@buddy1155 pure evs have 3x the round trip efficientcy than h2 fuel cell evs. That means 3x the renewable energy needs to be built and generated to run h2 fuel cell evs.
@@nordic5490 It is not a question with a single good answer. It depends on the application, for a plane weight is a bigger issue as efficiency. Efficiency is also something that can be improved, if 30% efficiency means there is 70% room for improvement. Batteries used to have low efficiencies as well it is just a matter of research and development.
@@buddy1155 for cars, h2 fuel cell evs are not viable. This is why even Toyota is moving to pure evs.
When you convert h2 to e, the maximum practical efficientcy is only 50%. Oxidising hydrogen (burning) is an exothermic reaction and gives up heat energy - energy that is wasted.
H2 fc cars are actually evs with the h2 fc charging the battery. This small battery gets absolutely hammered, with rapid deep discharge and charge, and wont last long. The fc membrane will also likey need to be replaced @ 100k kms.
The full grid-to-wheels efficientcy for a h2 fc car is 19-23%, vs pure ev efficientcy of 69%. This is a massive difference, that make h2 fc a non starter for cars.
H2 fc cars are also massively complex compared to pure evs, thus, $$$ and poor packaging and space.

£47k are they having a laugh? VW ID.4 First Edition with a 77kWh useable battery has over 280 miles of real world range for £35k on Drive The Deal. So don’t waste your money on this Toyota.
You say it doesn’t do self charging but then it has Charge mode so therefore it can self charge. Not the best way to charge the battery though.
It's nice enough but £47,400????? Near 50K for a Rav 4, no way sorry.

I agree!!! It’s equally expensive here in the states and I’d rather have my Bolt EV with over 238 (sometimes 300) mile all electric range! I don’t see why people are getting it over a less expensive EV. I only paid about $30K for my car.

But there's nothing else like it: 75-100km on EV alone and almost 1000km combined. 0-100km/h in 6s. 520L boot. AWD even with only EV engaged. Most plugin hybrids only have a small electric motor in them so the car feels sluggish driving in EV-only mode, but not so with the RAV4. Really comfortable seats (especially if you opt for the cooled seats) and quiet cabin due to the laminated glass. The upgrades are really cheap as well so it's a no brainer to get the model with everything included if you can get your hands on one that is. It's simply the best plugin hybrid out there right now especially with all of the discounts you get due to the low CO2 emissions in most countries.
The only problem is the name.
But this PRIME has what it takes!

The RAV4 Prime starts at $44,990 CAD here in Canada, and a direct conversion would be £26,699 GBP. What's up with that.

Could / should get a full electric car for that price. And one with more range than 40 miles. I don't see why hybrids are seen as a bridging tech for people to get them to switch to full EVs. It would put me off having such a terrible range, with all the maintenance and weight of both the drive trains
@@Lewis_Standing Agree'd, from my understanding, hybrids are the manufacturers way of 'bridging' and being able to comply with international regulations on emitions.
@@Lewis_Standing I get the idea - for your regular commute you can probably do EV only but the engine is there for your long trips. The risk though is that low EV range means charging every day (vs maybe once a week on a full EV), and you may end up not bothering and just leaning on the engine. And how many will buy for the low CO2 tax benefit and never plug it in?

The price of this vehicle only works if the government gives an incentive . Here in Canada , the government gives a $13,000 rebate. It works out to be cheaper than a regular RAV4 or Hybrid RAV4. Needless to say the wait list to get one is over a year.
But to clarify, the rebate is only $5K, nationally in Canada. The province of British Columbia adds up to $6500 (total rebate = up to $11.5K) more, while only the province of Quebec adds $8K (for the $13K).
@@patmccarthy8060 to be extra clear, because this is only a partial electric vehicle, the federal and provincial rebates in BC add up to a total of $6500.00

I don't understand why the same car is more expensive in the UK where in other countries like Japan, US, Canada & Australia its 14,000 pounds cheaper, why???
The biggest issue this car will face is from itself!
Toyota will launch their BZ range later this year and the first model BZ3x will be the size of this car but clearly a BEV on it's own platform will be cheaper!
It'll be interesting to see how much Toyota will charge for the BZ when the VW ID4 and Skoda Enyaq are around £40k....

Lovely review. Impressive car. The towing capacity is a strong selling point for me. Hope they go on sale in the USA ... Wonder what the Lexus version is? And how it stacks up appointments-wise and EV range-wise ...
GM really stubbed their toes when they killed the Volt/Ampera. For long range drivers out west in the USA where charging infrastructure is scarce for EV's, a real world plug-in hybrid is a valuable vehicle in the transition. Especially if it can run the on-board engine off renewable fuel like E85 ethanol ...
Loved my Golf GTE when I had one as a company car a few years back and I charged it whenever possible BUT these days I really don't see the point of PHEVs when all-electric cars are now much more available, especially when they are just as expensive! Come on Toyota, bite the bullet!

Oh, dear lady, it seems you are mistaken. This car indeed has a self charging option. Press and hold CHARGE button while driving.
I would prefer full electric, but a quality review once more delivered smoothly by the team.
Toyota sold a RAV4 EV 17 years ago in the USA, what happened since?

For any ev to be 'feasible' to the general public, the prices have to dramatically come down, which will probably happen in a few years time. Till then let's enjoy spending only around 5 minutes filling up the car & not over an hour plus 'topping' up an ev.

It is... but a PHEV that's never plugged in is actually less efficient than a HEV!
Oh so now they "Chose to plug in", what happened to the magic "Self Charging"?

@@FormulaWhine The move to electric cars is done to stop burning fossil fuels and the only way this car will move is by burning fuel and then recharging the battery as a result of that. So unless one lives on a high mountain and only drives the car downhill then its not self-charging. Put solarpanels on it then meaby its "Selfcharging".
We bought the the RAV4 hybrid about a year and a half ago. It is the best car we've ever had. We may upgrade to the plug-in when there is less hype and less of a premium to buy one.
Must be nice to buy a new car every few years...

What's the jbl sound system upgrade like?
It’s decent and sounds fairly clean. If you’re handy it’s cheaper and better to upgrade the speakers yourself. There are many “plug and play” options that are easy swaps. I bought a 2019 RAV4 and got the upgraded JBL. I just traded that in for a Prime and got the upgrade again but I plan to get better front door speakers.
Couldn't wait for you to review the Rav4 phev. I know it's a little dearer but Toyota have 25 years to perfect their Hybrids and have got the head start on everyone else. OK the tech on infotainment isn't up to scratch but you won't be using it while you drive. I'd have the Rav4 before any of the rest. I think the price and spec are high to control demand and that could have to do with Battery supply.
I just purchased the Rav4 Hybrid and may consider the Phev version in 3 year's time
If you put petrol in it, it's not green. If it's not green its inappropriate in the current environment. Could probably get a model Y for that price 🙄

Mach E interesting but what will it be like in 15 years time.
Model Y that depends on the price and Tesla still haven't fix the build quality issues and if you're involved in a fender bender where do you get it fixed. Tesla don't want your back street panel beater working on their car and they have limited number of dealers so you could be left waiting for your repairs. I think Mach E is the alternative. I will wait and see what the Toyota BZ ev turns out to be like before I make my mind up

That would be called a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) or more generic EV, an EVs could also be a hydrogen.
not self charging? this is the problem. it is just as "self charging" as the normal hybrid by their nonsense definition. more in fact. it has a bigger battery to get more regen down a hill before it is full. pure ev's are more self charging again. it's a crime this bs marketing.
I really like the normal RAV4, but this and all PHEVs are just compliance cars that are only useful for business users cutting tax. Great video as always.
Save even more money buy a Tesla or a mache and have 0 petrol cost! The charging time is not great either, my 28 kWh Ioniq only takes 9 hours on a three pin, for 140 ish miles

£47,000 you must be crazy, what is the point of even wasting time on this Nicki?? Now I love cars, I even love electric cars, I even love Electrifying, but this Toyota and many other EV’s highlight why most people are years away from owning an EV, Price!!
Most are ridiculously over priced, while still being compromised in many areas compared to mainstream petrol or diesel cars, and that’s before we even start on the National charging network.
I’ve always loved the RAV 4. But a PHEV over full electric? Sorry at that price Toyota loses me on this one, why they haven’t taken the opportunity to get really competitive is beyond me. They have basically given Hyundai, Kia, MG and everyone else the field leaving themselves waaaay behind. Bad business decision Toyota.
They have boxed themselves into a corner ..the Hyundai Tucson will be the competition.

Dear Electrifying team, please, PLEASE stop doing videos on hybrids, and stick with pure E.Vs.
For that money you can have a Tesla 3, no contest.
But I don't like SUVs anyway, whatever they are powered by they are still big inefficient lumps compared to a regular car.
Indeed no contest at all, Toyota has a good build quality and service. But agree on the SUV bit.
Tesla model 3 is a pain in the ass to get in and out of daily compared to the Rav. Much easier and Tesla insurance group is stupid

Tesla model 3 is such a boring grandad car. Nothing beats the height of an suv especially on a rainy day with kids and getting them into car seats.

Er. It is self charging 🤧 is a hybrid plus plugin as is the same car the Suzuki Across same ar 2k cheaper but still too much! Buy a nice V8 that’s dropped in price to circa 25k and tax, insure and fuel a proper car lol. Thanks for the vid though 😬 if your doing smaller regular journeys then get a smaller car🤪

Shame on Toyota, market leaders, pioneers even, when it came to the Prius hybrid. Roll forward to 2020 and they are still dragging their damn heels on fully electric vehicles, instead offering their self charging BS and PHEV. Not good enough. And nobody say anything about them 'waiting for the right battery technology' it's not a legitimate excuse any longer. Even Ford are moving with the times.

With every cold engine start, Hybrids and plugin Hybrids have about 20x more emissions than normal for a couple minutes, making them more toxic than an efficient gas car that doesn't start-stop its engine all the time.
No they dont!
You've clearly not driven the latest hybrid system from Toyota - the car management system keeps the coolant temperature up using heat from catalytic converter which means the engine will only cold start once, the engine has also been fitted with a GPF to lower NOx even further!

That is a big lie. Toyota hybrids start in electric mode up on till you accelerate aggressively.
