For the first effect you can also use "strobe light" under the effects tab

Thanks man! It's the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus. I'm not running it on the camera though, I've got it on a mic stand just outside the frame above my head, running a long extension cable for it, so that helps a ton.

You can use either, there's usually multiple ways to get things done in Premiere.

You can put your effects directly on the clips if you’d like, I just prefer to have them separated for organizational purposes.
