- We saw our lead at the top of the Premier League cut to two points after second-placed Manchester City ran out winners at Etihad Stadium.
Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring just seven minutes in, before John Stones added a VAR-assisted second just before half-time, with the Belgian completing his brace nine minutes after the restart.
Rob Holding would pull one back five minutes from the end, but Erling Haaland netted with virtually the last kick of the game to ensure our 10-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end.
The first half was one-way traffic as the hosts - on a six-match winning streak - tested us time and time again, and we soon found ourselves behind. Haaland held the ball up and found De Bruyne, who burst forward and switched the ball onto his right foot to arrow a low shot in the bottom corner past the outstretched arm of Aaron Ramsdale.
The City duo were the main threat throughout the half, and the goalscorer would once again break through in similar fashion - but an excellent sliding block by Ben White prevented De Bruyne adding his second.
Then began a personal battle between Ramsdale and Haaland, which started when the division’s leading marksman slipped between two defenders but scuffed at our number one, who then had to beat away a fierce volley by the Norwegian striker as City cranked up the pressure.
Our only sight of goal in the first half arrived after 34 minutes, when Thomas Partey took aim from the edge of the box but failed to hit the target, and soon after, Haaland was at it again when he found space and burst forward but bent his effort wide of the post.
He continued to keep Ramsdale busy, and five minutes before half-time Jack Grealish wriggled his way along the touchline and picked out Haaland, but Aaron made a good stop with his legs before hacking the loose ball away.
It looked as though we would get into half-time trailing by just one, but then a heartbreaker arrived. In stoppage-time, De Bruyne sent a free-kick to the back post where Stones was waiting to head past Ramsdale, and after it was initially flagged offside, VAR intervened and sent us into the break 2-0 down.
After the restart it was the same old story as Haaland and De Bruyne continued to be at the heart of all City’s most dangerous moments. The striker went one-on-one with Ramsdale and was once again denied - but despite that, it was virtually game over after 54 minutes.
De Bruyne latched onto an under-hit Martin Odegaard pass and found Haaland, who picked the right time to play it back to his team-mate. He expertly controlled the pass and slipped the ball past Ramsdale to get his second of the night.
We needed something quickly to give ourselves any glimmer of hope and Holding saw a shot deflect just wide after a goalmouth scramble, but after that, a skied Bukayo Saka free-kick and a shot across goal by substitute Eddie Nketiah failed to trouble Ederson.
However we did pull one back with five minutes remaining when Leandro Trossard cut inside from the right and got into the box, and the ball fell into the path of Holding who produced a neat finish to beat City’s Brazilian keeper.
But in the final seconds, Phil Foden teed up Haaland who finally got the better of Ramsdale to score his 33rd league goal of the season to round off a disappointing night that saw the gap at the top of the table reduced.

Arteta's poor game/man management contributed to his team collapsing. Too many underperforming players have been overplayed, or a lack of flexibility in his tactics has finally caught up with him.

Ramsdale was class
City supporter here. Arteta did an phenomenal job with this group of boys. As the season draws to a close, it will be followed by a lot of negativity for the team, however let's not forget that no one expected them to be in the top 2 to begin with. With everying his done this year so excited to see how the next few season will play out. ❤

It was awe-inspiring to watch city play, their fans are lucky to have a team that brings them so much joy constantly. Our boys still need to grow up but whoever thought we stood a chance against this behemoth after the month we’ve just had didn’t really watch either team recently. I expected more of a fight but city are so unbelievably good, they just needed haaland and Kdb and they undid 5 of our players, our best players missing(both figuratively and actually in Saliba). The day odegaard and Jesus can do what they did I’ll have real hope. We can at least try and change this form and give them no more breathing room but I know the title race is well and truly over.
I feel really lucky to witness this era of Pep's City!

I am so surprised by Haaland on the first goal. The strength to hold back the cb, the insane ball control and turn, and then a perfectly weighted pass to finish it off. Literally looked like Zidane. I don’t think people appreciate what this man could be!
It's a depressing result and the way we played. Perhaps Arteta could have done something different, I also cannot help noticing that he pushed the players too much, since the beginning of the season game after game we are always repeating the same lineup and the players not only miss Saliba and Tomiyasu but also physical and emotional exhaustion.

Exactly, he has the brilliant Trossard , the composed Jorginho, the skillfully energetic Smith Rowe, and the powerful Kiwior on the beach. If Arteta had secured the MD,LW positions and rested the likes of Saka, Ødeegard and Partey, Arsenal would have won the previous three games, imho.

Arteta needs to have multiple approaches to the game like this. Trying and trying to build up with short passing from the back sometimes doesn't work and it increases the chance of City winning the ball very close to Ramsdale. Pep knew what to do - chasing Arsenal players down to the side, and as the result, City always got the ball back or forced Arsenal to kick the ball forward randomly.
Poor strategy by Arsenal. And Arteta should’ve substituted much much earlier. After the shittiest first half, no change? Really? Come on. Go big or go home.

As a Liverpool fan I feel for the arsenal fans. We too have come very close to winning a title but just couldn't keep the intensity going in the final quarter of the season. Man City's squad is insane and competing with them is very tough.

It has been a fantastic and positive season regardless, even if it feels a bit disappointing now it only feels that way because the boys overachieved so hard this campaign. I hope we can strengthen, bring in a strong backup at CB if Kiwior is deemed not ready, and get in Rice and/or Caicedo. Hope to see Trossard and Reiss both given more of a chance next season as well, both have contributed big performances for us this year and tbh have earned a spot already. COYG forever
Honestly speaking this Season was a bit easy for Arsenal as they were the only club that were in form . Spurs , Chelsea , Liverpool all these clubs fell off in form and even City fell of in form at the beginning of the season .
agree with your assessment. You can only for so long outperform expected goals scored/against and clinch last minute wins or secure 1 goal difference victories. Liverpool miraculously kept this up a while longer and beat City, but even in the seasons where points were close City simply created way more good chances and conceded less chances.

so gutted guys feeling so down for my team that has been giving me joy all year long during these difficult days..!!but what kills me most is that we feared them too much, we did not keep our play, our swagger, the relentless attacking spirit that we showed against southampton...we allowed them alot of the ball which killed us.. all goals were from fear..ice in the stomach..but i have we will win the league. now we live it for lesser teams to hold the rival for us..GO GUNNERS! We look nervous in the match. Our game plan seems already in Pep's mind and he knows how to deal with. After conceding 3 goals, we get some possession of ball and the substitutes play well. Haaland is really a monster. He's another Drogba to our defenders. 😢😢😢😢
This was the crunch match as far as I'm concerned and it's just unfortunate that Arsenal are facing Man City at their absolute best, they just seem unstoppable at the moment. 2 games in hand & only a point in it, I'd say City are looking top contenders for the title race now.

From this season, we know how much potential this team can has, the only thing lacking now is the depth and subs who can perform at the key stages like the options Man City has. We greatly suffered after losing saliba and tomiyasu to injury.

Arsenal blew it by dropping 4 points against West Ham and Southampton, the earlier loss against Everton was key too. You can’t drop points like that on a race against Man City.

The positive side:
Arsenal is now officially a team City has to use their A-team against, he probably played the same team he will play against Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, we are that much of a threat. ESR , Jorginho, Trossard, Nelson and Holding combining for that sweat goal. Our team B is trying to break in the A team and managing it. That is depth. There's a positive side to the whole experience and we can choose to remember it as a positive moment use it as fuel to keep going.

I keep saying this. That if Liverpool’s team of 2018/19 (with 97points) and that of last season (with 92 points) couldn’t win the league title over this guardiola’s city side then trust me this arsenal side does not deserve this year’s league title. To beat this city side to the league title you need to go extra mile ( like Liverpool in 2019/2020 season)
Arteta and the team did more than we had expected before. Who thought we would go to race in the champion title? Nobody. Pep basically tweaked the roles of KDB and Haaland for this game. Pep knew Arsenal would try to shut down City's main source of goals which is Haaland. So, he made KDB the source while Haaland using his physicality and brilliant hold up play be a hybrid between a false 9 and an attacking midfielder. If you look at City's heat map for this game you will see just that. Haaland and KDB were so fluid that they would interchange positions freely. By having Haaland play as a false 9 and attacking mid, Pep disorganized Arsenal's defensive line big time and created massive gaps that City exploited. This game would have ended with City scoring 7 goals had Haaland been more clinical with his earlier chances.
Arteta basically deployed the same tactics that he used against City at the Emirates back in February. The build up play was exactly same while for City, their build up play and their general approach to the game was very different that it caught Arteta unaware.

There are many benefits of having a young team but we need some experienced players as well. It's been a great run and I hope adequate changes can be made so we finally get the title next season.

It was pretty disappointing, but it's not over till it's over! Keep at it until the last game, even if we don't win the title we have to go the distance and learn from this. We should be proud of our growth and there is still more to be done. You never know in the premier league, even though it's slim the chance is still there.
