    ❗️Personal note
I visited Le Mont Saint-Michel on the 21st of September 2024 on National Monument Day in France. During this day, parts of the Abbey are open to the public that are otherwise closed to the public. It is recommended to take the walk to the island very early in the morning. Wandering through this medieval island almost alone in the morning and watching the sunrise is breathtaking.
    🔲 Summary
Le Mont Saint-Michel is a small rocky island located in Normandy, France, near the coast of the English Channel. It is famous for its stunning medieval architecture, most notably the towering Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, which crowns the island. The island is surrounded by a vast bay that experiences some of the highest tides in Europe, causing the island to sometimes be completely surrounded by water, making it look like it’s floating in the sea.
    🔲 History
Historically, Mont Saint-Michel has served as a strategic fortress, a pilgrimage site, and a religious center since the 8th century. The narrow, cobbled streets, defensive walls, and picturesque buildings make it one of the most visited tourist destinations in France.
Its unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty has earned it a place as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is renowned for the dramatic shifts between low and high tides, which make the island accessible by foot at times and completely isolated during high tide.
🔲 The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel
This Gothic masterpiece is the island's main highlight. Visitors can explore its stunning cloisters, visit the abbey church, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding bay.
🔲 The narrow streets and the Grande Rue
The main street of the island is lined with medieval buildings, boutiques, cafés, and restaurants, offering a charming walk through history.
🔲 The Bay of Mont Saint-Michel
During low tide, guided tours through the bay allow visitors to experience the unique tidal phenomena and learn about the region's natural environment.
    🔲 The Walls and Ramparts
Mont Saint-Michel is surrounded by impressive defensive walls. Walking along the ramparts provides stunning views of the sea and the surrounding landscape.
    🔲 Saint-Aubert Chapel
A smaller, often overlooked chapel at the edge of the island, offering a quiet and spiritual atmosphere.
