  • In this Physics video in Hindi for class 11 we explained Young's modulus and derived its formula from Hooke's Law. We also explained its S.I. unit and its dimension. We derived the Young's modulus for steel and solved few numerical problems.
    Young's modulus is the ratio of the longitudinal stress to the longitudinal strain.
    Experimental observation show that for a given material, the magnitude of the strain produced is same whether the stress is tensile or compressive. The ratio of tensile (or compressive) stress (σ) to the longitudinal strain (ε) is defined as Young’s modulus and is denoted by the symbol Y.
    Y = σ/ε
    Y = (F/A)/(ΔL/L)
    Y= (F × L) /(A × ΔL)
    Since strain is a dimensionless quantity, the unit of Young’s modulus is the same as that of stress i.e., N m^(-2) or Pascal (Pa).
    We solved the following numericals for IIT JEE and NEET
    🔴 NCERT Example 9.1 A structural steel rod has a radius of 10 mm and a length of 1.0 m. A 100 kN force stretches it along its length.
    Calculate (a) stress, (b) elongation, and (c) strain on the rod.
    Young’s modulus, of structural steel is 2 X 10^11 Nm^(-2)
    🔴 NCERT EXERCISE 9.1 A steel wire of length 4.7 m and cross-sectional area 3.0 × 10^(-5) m2 stretches by the same amount as a copper wire of length 3.5 m and cross-sectional area of 4.0 × 10^(-5) m2 under a given load. What is the ratio of the Young’s modulus of steel to that of copper?
