- Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was organist and Director of Music at Trinity College Cambridge from 1874-1892.
In this documentary, leading Stanford expert and former Trinity Choral Scholar Professor Jeremy Dibble presents an overview of Stanford's Trinity career, a period of outstanding creative output and far-reaching musical and pedagogical influence.
This documentary was made to support a wider programme of events commemorating the centenary of Stanford's death in 2024, which also included a weekend of musical celebrations at Trinity.

I was in the choir up to the year the Prof joined - so we didn't quite overlap. In those days we were only 16 adult male voices. We had to ship in the lasses from Girton to do our Stanford-based services. Changed days now!

In my years as an organist, I've worked with some of Stanford's Church music; mostly the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis and Te Deum settings, the Motets, and Organ music. I've recently purchased the complete Symphonies on Naxos and am familiarising myself with them. It would be great to have Jeremy Dibble's book on the great man in my library, but its price has always been an obstacle and there's no sign of a Paperback copy. Looking ahead to the imminent publication of the Revised version - weighing in at around £70 - that also seems to be far in excess of most people's budgets, which is not going to help anyone with an interest in Stanford's life and music to study the subject. Making it a lost opportunity! He does seem to have been a stern teacher, by all accounts, but composed much glorious music which is well worth exploring. One wonders, in the year which marks the centenary of his death, where his music will mainly be performed outside of the Cathedrals, Collegiate Chapels, and Churches throughout the land.

I can't help but comment - while no relation I'm aware of, I am a Charles (Thomas) Stanford. As a musician for many years in the US Episcopal Church my name garnered much attention to be sure! Very interesting film - thank you!

Thank you for highlighting this excellent composer. What a pity, though, that the music itself was reduced to snippets. The chamber music, the concertos, the symphonies are too rarely heard. Indeed, if anything can make the case for Stanford as a significant composer, it is the music. _Si monumentum requiris, audi!_

@@TrinityCollegeChoirI am indeed familiar with - and love - the Hyperion choral recordings. They are superb! And that organ - I love my little parish organ but sometimes I yearn for the grop that can be summoned to support a gloria! I've been a fan of Trinity College Choir for many years. I would have loved a whole coherent chunk of the music - I imagine that the nunc in A would be a wonderful musical accompaniment to a series of shots of the chapel.
