    Andy and I will be doing volume 3 of the "GW's collection" videos shortly , it will feature my Vitus exhibits and lots of boring tech stuff if Andy asks me the right questions !!

      @@BikeItUK Andy, I would be really interested in knowing how the ride and feel of the Vitus with the alloy fork feels compared to a traditional steel frame from the same period. I am thinking about buying and building up a Vitus 979 frame for the Eroica California event but I would like to know more about it's ride characteristics.

    Blimey this brings back memories! I met Sean Kelly whilst out cycling in Mallorca some years ago and we rode along together chatting for some miles. What a charming and modest man he is. A true professional and hard as nails. Coincidentally I also owned a Vitus 979 with red main tubes which my step-son now has on the wall in his house (minus the forks which I foolishly changed for carbon ones). Another great video which has inspired me to get that frame back and give it the Sean Kelly makeover if I can get my hands on another fork. Love your enthusiastic videos...keep 'em coming owd son!

    I loved my Virus 979. I raced on it for a year in the early 90s. You could really feel the liveliness of the frame. Your restoration turned out great.

      Thanks for the support, the Vitus I’d probably say is up there as one of the best restoration rides I’ve done regarding how well the bike felt. It was light and felt very similar to a more modern ride. You can see why in the day they were so successful

    I bought the Vitus 979 circa 1987 it has been my main bike ever since. I love it. It has majority of the original groupo and the upgraded Campagnolo Wheels from the 80s with some modern updates shifters and bottom braked. Still ride it every day.

    I was fortunate to distribute Vitus in the 80's when Sean was doing such a good job selling them ! so have a great deal of experience of the marque.I dealt directly with the factory and was trained by them to undertake minor repairs . The most common being replacing broken rear drop outs. We also sold various steel tubing sets which was of very high quality but could never compete with Reynolds and the Columbus .
    This frame is one of the last of the 979 's having the later seat lug and the Electrophoretic white finish [At that time they also introduced two anodised finishes are now very rare , green and gold ] Latterly Sean used a gold one . By the time this model came out Vitus had long since conquered the problems of the early machines, namely failure due to ageing of the adhesives they used for bonding . They used a highly advanced epoxy two part adhesive that was extremely reliable . It was developed for the Carbon 3 but they found it perfect for the alloy tubes as well.At the time there were lo-pro road and track trames also available in both alloy and carbon .They continued to offer the 979 for 2-3 years after introducing the 992 ,then when their stock of part was near depleted they dropped it altogether around 1990 . The 992 in carbon was a superb frame but by then TVT and several Japanese manufacturers had created competition in the carbon frame market and as they also spent heavily on sponsoring pro teams they ate into Vitus' domination of the market . Vitus replied with an early one piece carbon called ZX-1 but it was ahead of its time and I think mid 90's they were bought out by Look or Time .

    • @davxbeau
      @davxbeau 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one with the allen key lug at the seat post - such a slick design - but mine is a beautiful shade of blue, with a Yitus logo in white that is thick, striped and stuck on to the frame - is that blue anodised or paint? It has Shimano 105, a 3TTT stem and Mavic OpenSport wheels and a San Marco rolls saddle. So what year do you reckon that is?

    • @grahamweigh1701
      @grahamweigh1701 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davxbeau That was the Mk2 , the improved seat lug and seat stay bonding were in response to a number of bonding failure and also people's tendency to over tighten the old seat bolt fitting .introduced for 1988 season . Of course the result was a tiny grub screw in a very dirty position so we ended up drilling a lot out and helicoiling the hole as the screw corroded solid after a couple of season in that muck sprayed position .

    • @grahamweigh1701
      @grahamweigh1701 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue anodised .

      @Graham Weigh.......I bought a Vitus 979 [Duralinox] secondhand in the early 1990's. It was the lovely light-blue metallic colour with yellow decals and kitted out with Campag groupset [down-tube shifters!]. I bought it to go to see the Tour de France with my brother and some friends and carried on riding it until the early-2000's. One of the lightest bikes I have ever ridden - even to this day!

    Bought a 2nd hand one in 1986. Didn't race but trained alot. Bike did more miles than the space shuttle. Was able to climb up all hills with a 39 × 18. Still have the bike but don't ride it. Tubular tyres too expensive. Great memories of a youth well spent.

    Very nice restoration. The KAS decals really made the frame come alive. In the 1980's I had a blue Vitus 979. Yes, squishy ride, but for some reason I loved it. It got bent in a crash, but I bent it back to almost normal and continued riding it. Ultimately, the shifter mounts on the down tube kept coming off. I would re-glue them, and they would stay for awhile, and then come off eventually. I disassembled the frame with a heat gun, and made a lamp out of the seat tube. Memories!

    Love this cheerful but clearly knowledgeable presentation style. I was delighted to learn what I'd received as a Free Bike 2 days ago when I cycled 2 miles to get it & walked home pushing both bikes. I'm not sure if the grub screw is within the hole behind the seat post but removing the post then adjusting gears/brakes will leave me with a super light 1 hand liftable bike!

    I am owning the same Vitus 979 frameset, size 60cm in red. I have rebuilt it with a Shimano 600 groupset but mixed some parts like 105 brakes, Dura Ace 8x gearchange with bar end shifters. I love to ride this bike although the frame is not so sturdy like an actual aluminum frame.

    Raced a Vitus 979 in the late 80's and even did a couple of P-R Randonees when they were the full race length. It was black with Peugeot stickers. I tried to get KAS ones but could never find them. Dura Ace groupset but with a Nadax Favorit sealed BB. Had yellow bartape and a yellow cover on the turbo saddle. Also had the Look chunky white clipless pedals and then the smaller black ones. Wish I'd never sold it now.....

    What a great job. By the way, I had a problem in restoring My bicycle. Its rear derailleur mounting was not in a good shape, so I cannot install the RD. What do You think about it, have You ever got the same problem as mine while You restoring one of those classic bikes?

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Johaness Castle Hi thanks for the support, it depends if the hanger is part of the frame or if it is a bolt on type. If of bolt on variety then it's a matter of locating a suitable hanger. If it's part of the steel frame then all is not lost if it just requires realigning. I have an email address on the about section on the channel if you wanted to send an image of the problem. Hope this helps Andy

    Andy, I have a question. Got my hands on a Vitus 979 here in the states. Refurbishment has started and I have a question. The brake cable and housing through the top tube….how did you install it? Before I take the old housing out…I figured I’d ask you. Also, how do you find out what year it it? Thanks in advance!

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for your support, I’m fairly convinced the inner housing is fixed in place. If not I use fishing line looped inside the housing, as the cable passes over I pull on the looped line to pull the threaded cable out of the frame. I hope this makes sense and helps. Good luck and enjoy
