I saw Rick in concert at the old Spectrum in Philadelphia on a triple bill with the Maryjane Girls opening the show with a fun set, followed by Teena Marie who brought the house down before Rick and the Stone City Band finished the night. I have to say that Teena stole the night, which was a very hard thing to do with that line up. But what a great night.
Rick James was a musical genius! From when his first album dropped and you and I was released I was hooked. He songs have a nasty bass lines, horns, the female vocals. To see how far his musical range is, listen to "when love is gone." You can hear the pain in his voice. He is my favorite male singer along with Gino Vanelli, the first white singer on soul train. It is a shame that when people think or hear the name Rick James the first thing that comes to mind is the running joke "I'm Rick James bitch" or they automatically think superfreak. He was so much more!

To see how far his musical range is, listen to "when love is gone." You can hear the pain in his voice. He is my favorite male singer along with Gino Vanelli, the first white singer on soul train. It is a shame that when people think or hear the name Rick James the first thing that comes to mind is the running joke "I'm Rick James bitch" or they automatically think superfreak. He was so much more!
Saw Rick in concert back n the day in Detroit. Came on stage smoking a two ft joint. I swear was bringing up audience members to help him smoke it!! 🚬one of the best concerts I've ever been to 💘. The great Tina Marie ❤ helped him sing Fire and Desire!!! Great performers I miss them both!!!
