    Next time, use silicon sealant between the lens the same way you did but don't torque the screws down all the way. Let the silicon set and essentially make a perfect seal, then torque the screws down so that you maintain pressure on the newly formed rubber seal. This has helped me in the past.
    Love the videos!
    Edit: Okay don't use silicon! Use whatever sealant is best but the technique is valid. Basically making your own custom seal and then tighten down onto it.

    I honestly keep coming back because of how I know I'm not getting a one attempt and over video. We know you are going to normally design something, test it, improve it, and when even my doubts are like "Nah he's not gonna get this" somehow you freaking pull it off. If you don't, we still learn. It's an amazing formula that I fall for every time and I love it :D

    You could lower the exposure on the Timelapse so it’s not clipping. Take a separate photo for the background as it’s static. This could make for a more even end result. Or use bracketing for multiple exposures and combine them as hdr.

    Instead of compositing, you should try a very long exposure shot on a DSLR with low ISO and low aperture (and ND filters if needed to lower the amount of light hitting the sensor even more), and then try to drive at a constant pace. It could make for very cool effects... but the sea weed would probably appear super "soft" and blurry secause of ripples on the water, underwater currents etc.

    You could fill the lamp body with mineraloil. this solves the buoyancy issue aswell as the water creep. the water wants to get inside because of the pressure delta. having the oil in it would keep the pressure the same and it also helps to keep the leds and inductor cool

    • @chrisbarter
      @chrisbarter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought similar . You think the mineral oil would scatter the light any differently?

    • @justingort1
      @justingort1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Chris Barter it would have some effect. But it might be negligible because of the output power of the light. Als if the oil is directly touching the led. The light will refact less compared to air. I have seen it somewhere it has to do with the difference in refraction between 2 mediums

    The moment I saw how you made the cable pass trough and port window seal, I knew it will leak.
    Epoxy shrinks when it cures ! Creating a slight gap all round, that is not necessarily visible by eye.
    One way of overcoming this, is by casting the wire into epoxy, then coat it in silicone.
    If you make something like a cone that fits into a cable gland that can be tightened, you have less
    chance of leakage.
    Front port is better done with a routed groove and O-ring, or cured silicone bead in groove, before
    tensioning the port window.
    Bear in mind, the meat and air inside will expand a lot due to heat, than shrink rapidly when cooling down,
    essentially drawing water in.....

    I already see a lot of helpful comments but i'm not sure if anyone has mentioned yet that he should point the light at the bottom to help ease the gradient and over exposure up close to the lens. This relies on the light bouncing off the bottom but from the shots where he had it suspended mid water column and pointed down, the lighting and ability to see the bottom of the lake/river looked better!

    I was just watching another channel (Tech Ingredients) that mentioned that silicon can be permeable to water. That was a surprise to me! How bout yourself if true? Therefore the epoxy may not be the problem to sealing the electronics in the box from water. It may be the silicon seal you are using. Another possibility is a high moisture content of the air, or humidity when you sealed the box, and then the much cooler water temperature caused the humidity in the air in the box to condense down, or precipitate into actual water within the confines of the box. Possible remedy are silica gel beads (called a desiccant) used to keep things dry in high humidity conditions. Its interesting how Wikipedia described silica gels: "Canisters are commonly filled with silica gel and other molecular sieves used as desiccant in drug containers to keep contents dry". "Molecular sieves" Water easily flows through a sieve, but who knows!

    A heads up I have used that speaker wire as it was all I had to get my solar in my caravan working and in just 2 weeks I stragley had only a fraction of the power coming through and it turned out to be the speaker wire reacted with the normal power cable it was all green and corroded and the same happened to a friend a year later. Luckily for him I had the issue prior as he had no clue and was out of ideas.
    Just a heads up to anyone using speaker cable especially if ur using it and not getting the power through. Hope this helps someone out there one day.
    A connector block would prob work as long as the wires don't touch and u only have speaker wire to work with. Xx

    hello, my team has been trying to seal a robot and we went through alot of different sealants. Silicone is very stiff and it doesnt' conform very well when the body moves/bends. We found that butyl tape is very good at sealing. It doesn't harden up, so it's a little messy, but it easily conforms to the seal and literally no drops will come through.

  • @djrrmml7514

    It probably failed the first time because of thermal expansion from the air in the casing. warming up air creates pressure. Make sure you have some kind of membrane to relieve the pressure. None the less cool project!

      Very likely. It would also probably have been better to have the cover compress an o-ring in a v-shaped groove in the case rather than rely on silicone (under the holes for the screws instead of inside, even) for the seal.

    What you have designed there, Id' be very surprised if is didn't leak when it goes to a few meters.
    You should have designed a n o-rings groove in to it and added a o-ring, you should also have added an cheap penetrator from bluerobotics for you wires connections. No need to use Subconn connectors that cost an arm and a leg.
    Also, I'm curious, what did the enclosure and the poly front cost if you had to buy it yourself? been considering trying them out for future work projects.

  • @siberx4
    @siberx4 ปีที่แล้ว

    An alternative to trying to seal around your wire directly is to install a barb fitting in your housing and run your wire through the middle of that, then encase the wire in a long piece of vinyl tubing. It's bulkier, but since stuff like hose fittings are intended to make good seals, it's much easier to avoid seepage this way.
    Also, if the hose squishing with depth is a problem, you can fill the whole thing with mineral oil.
    As others have mentioned, the reflector is actually hurting your purposes here. A better design would use two COBs with no reflectors mounted back-to-back on a single heatsink "fin" with the housing as thin as possible to get as even a sphere of light as you can.

    Pro Tip.. Use Polyurethane Glue For The Ultimate Waterproof Seal 👍
    .
    The type of glue used to seal RVs / Motorhomes
    .
    .
    In england its approx £10 per tube
    .
    And you will need a caulking gun
    .
    But its WAAAY better than epoxy resin or silicone
    .
    .
    .
    The downside is its SO DAMN STRONG .. it makes it VERY hard to dismantle
    .
    .
    This glue is also used to glue race cars together and its that strong the metal rips round the glue joint in a crash !
