You can see a tiny figurine version of them in the opening. Very tiny and from the back. I sae it last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. Great to see everyone doing there thing. I did feel like it was more an extended life action version of the cartoon show. Not bad just different but in a good way
As much as I would’ve LOVED to see Geena come back, ghosts don’t age. So while watching Beetlejuice 2, just imagine as if the Maitlands went to a better place.
I can appreciate the idea everyone has that their story was told and they can move on, etc. But the original film stated that all ghosts are required to haunt their home for 125 years. As someone who loves the characters I was just hoping for an explanation. I'm okay with their absence, but I would just like to hear the movie explain why they're no longer there, even if it is some kind of loophole.
If they had not waited so long for the sequel, the Maitland could have joined in again if the sequel is made back in the early 90s when they could’ve pulled it off, but I never understood why it took so long to make a second part
@@nerdgiant4101 No it doesn't. They could have been de-aged at the first movie says they have to spend 125 years in the house. So unless the sequel takes place outside the house it does not.
@@GaryTongue-zn5di de aged de aged de aged. That's all you got? Their story was told and wasn't needed for a sequel. Plus they will explain it in the new one.
Alec and Geena's story arcs were sunset gracefully. Jeffery Jones was given the Charlie Sheen Treatment. Jeffery Jone's character was there in mocking cartoon lambast form, without any likeness of the actor. As if rubbing it in, "they did this whole joke without you."
I feel like they didn't initially cross over because they never got to be parents. (It was hinted that they really wanted to be but had fertility issues.) So that was their "unfinished business". Then they got to be parent figures to Lydia and have a hand in raising her. So they were then able to cross over once she grew up
I think another reason for Jeffrey Jones (Grandpa Deetz) not being in it is because a few years ago, he was in trouble with the law over what I believe was a sex scandal situation. Otherwise, Tim is a genius and this movie is his baby if not his "swan song" of sorts and knows what needs to be done. It's been over 30 yrs and I believe it's time for a resurrection no pun intended!👻
I was glad that they got a mention, but was very quick. They found a loop hole and moved on...that's all we needed and crack on with the new story. I loved it! And I was as cynical as you could imagine. Great film, great fun, hit every spot!
That was so unfair to the Maitlands. They were after all Lydia's TRUE parental figures since her biological parents were so disengaged. At least there should be some emotional acknowledgent of this fact in the film.
They were aware of this in the movie. Astrid: "Why don't we get the attic ghosts to help out?" Lydia: "They're not here anymore. We found a loophole in the rules and they moved on." Astrid: "That's convenient." Me: "Yes, it is."
Tbh I feel like their story ended like at some point with Lydia growing up and them leaving that house it makes sense the Maitlands should be able to move on and go to heaven or whatever it is in the movie. The sequel too is about Lydia and her family, her daughter. It’s now their story. Tbh it’s good closure for me personally that the Maitlands got to move on and now hopefully are happy.
I think it could be argued there was a resurgence of Michael Keaton in lead roles. He did supporting roles throughout most of the 00s, with exceptions like Jack Frost and White Noise.
I didn't have a problem with them not being in this sequel. The movie was just fine without them, and their storyline played itself out in the first one.
I'm gonna say that, considering ghosts have like this unfinished business kind of deal, which comes with the territory, both Adam and Barbera have passed on to the next life, as in, finished their business, and so on.
When the first one came out I didn’t get to go see it at the movies but I friend of mine had a sleep over for her birthday. I think we were 12 bc if I’m not mistaken it came out in 89. Anyway, I loved it the first time I ever watched. It is one of my all time favs and I’m 46 now. I’ve been super excited to see the sequel. I was supposed to see it over this past weekend, unfortunately things didn’t turn out for me the way I’d planned. However, next weekend I’ll be there! I’m getting a collectible popcorn bucket as well😂 I ❤Beetlejuice and Halloween!!😊
Honestly, it was the best way to handle it. It showed that they can move on to a better existence and not be stuck with the Bettle guy. In fact, the ghosts who stay are those that can't or shouldn't move on
I’ve no problem with the maitlands not being in the movie. Their story was told, they lived, died, went through the motions and had a happy ending. And as with all ghost lore they most likely moved on to the next steps in the afterlife
Geena and Alec are awesome. Would have been cool to see them again. I'm hoping with Tim finding his spark again, he'll follow this up with another cool movie made with his friends.
Well if Beetlejuice 3 happens, it would be nice to see them in a small cameo if possible. Maybe helping to bring an elderly Lydia onto the soul train or something
Alec and Geena being forced in to this film would have ruined it. The reason why it’s so good is because it isn’t trying to copy the original. It’s a new story.
It was an ageism at all! Ghosts don't age. She was right. I've seen the sequel. There's no way they could have fit Barbara and Adam in and not service their characters properly with everything they had going on with all the subplots
this was what I was thinking. there's this theory that ghosts remain on earth because they have unfinished business or cant cross over because of something. I feel like The Maitland's found their way to cross over by literally having the family they wanted because it seemed like Lydia got an extra pair of parents at the end of the film ones who accepted her for who she is so I feel like Lydia graduating, and becoming a parent the maitland felt fulfilled and the gates of heaven open and they finally could cross over that's my own theory as to why the characters aren't there... best part tonight I'm going to see the movie and I'm excited!
The whole movie is based around Gina and Alex characters. Even though it’s called Beetlejuice, it’s their movie. They are definitely going to be missed.
I think he was more focused on the idea of beetlejuice background.. Think about the serk peak where we saw beetlejuice talking about how he died... If there's a third film maybe Tim Burton will find a way to bring them back...
This new movie was fun, I m glad I seen it, Its weird to get a sequel after so long and it really felt like a proper sequel in the spirit of the original.
My only question is how do they go about explaining it. First movie said they gotta be ghosts for 125 years. So passively saying “they found a loop hole” doesn’t do it for me. If the Deetzs has been likeable characters I would mind a little less.
I was immensely disappointed that the Maitlands weren't in it. After all, Beetlejuice is about a young couple who die and what happens to them. The other characters are great but the Maitlands are at the centre of this story. De-aging technology works wonders these days. That's a cop out to say they've aged. You need a straight man for the comedy to work. The Maitlands were the normal that exaggerates the weirdness of what's going on around them.
I would have liked to see a nice cameo from the Maitlands, even if it was brief, just to see them happy and have them, at least, included in the movie. I kind of feel like they got snubbed a little, honestly. 😕
I just got back from watching and it was it pretty solid AFAIC. Beetlejuice's story is fleshed out more, Lydia and Astrid were great, Delores (Monica Bellucci) was fantastic and there lots of little easter eggs thrown in. Class Burtonesque animation for Charles Deeta was clever. Overall, a pretty solid sequel IMHO.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice looks good. Going to see it. This weekend with a good friend. Sorry for Geenia Davis and Alec Baldwin. Not getting to come back. Nice to see Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder again. A long with a new cast of characters. This should be good. It's Show Time.
I just watched the movie. The story he’s telling didn’t need them. I could see how he could have used them but it’s easier to remove them and focus on a story that already has lots of characters. Smart choice in my opinion.
I'm glad this movie didn't fall into the whole "we need to have all of the OG characters together or else the fans will riot," mentality that a lot of these legacy sequels seem to have. Burton knew the story he wanted to tell, and only used the characters that were necessary to tell it.
A lot of sequels try way too hard to recapture the themes of the original. Comedies reuse the same jokes, and some franchises even reuse the plot (looking at YOU, Star Wars). This usually makes them boring. Better to do something new, and sometimes that requires following different characters. I’m now more likely to go see BB, since Burton seems to understand this.
Honestly, as long as the characters are mentioned and we know what happened to them, I think that’s fine. I’m probably not going to see this just because I think I’ve outgrown that character, but Tim Burton always puts the story first. I imagine it’s going to be pretty good.
They definitely would not have fit in this story. A cameo maybe could've worked but wouldn't have added much beyond "hey, look at these guys." As it is the movie could've used another 20 minutes to flesh out at least 2 of the plot threads they did have.
I also include the cartoon into the Beetlejuice universe so my theory is that this is another adventure with Beetlejuice and Lydia, and those characters were from another storyline.
If it was ageist then they wouldn't have brought back Catherine O'Hara and Winona Ryder, or only given them cameos to give Jenna Ortega the spotlight. I'm ok with the Maitlands not being in it because their story was finished and they deserve peace, while Lydia's character has more opportunity to be explored.
Geena's theory is right.
Also, they weren't bitter souls that are going to spend eternity haunting. They moved on to a higher plane of existence.

You can see a tiny figurine version of them in the opening. Very tiny and from the back. I sae it last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. Great to see everyone doing there thing. I did feel like it was more an extended life action version of the cartoon show. Not bad just different but in a good way
Is it perhaps because Mr. Maitland was going through a pretty infamous trial?!?🤔
I long ago theorized that Lydia's mom was not dead since absence was a theme moreso than death. Turns out, I was right.
I figured it was just Disney syndrome. Like we don't know what to do with mom so she's dead and bam! Here's your "evil" stepmother
They took the Soul train
Not surprised. It makes sense.
No it doesn't. They could have been deaged.
@@GaryTongue-zn5diIt makes perfect sense.
@@nerdgiant4101
No it doesn't.
@@GaryTongue-zn5diBlatantly false
Alec and Geena's story arcs were sunset gracefully. Jeffery Jones was given the Charlie Sheen Treatment.
Jeffery Jone's character was there in mocking cartoon lambast form, without any likeness of the actor.
As if rubbing it in, "they did this whole joke without you."
I wish they were in it BUT this is a sequel, not a remake, they’re telling a new story, I get it
No there telling the next story because he got loose again when they just sent him back but she did ask him to save his daughter . 4:27
I feel like they didn't initially cross over because they never got to be parents. (It was hinted that they really wanted to be but had fertility issues.) So that was their "unfinished business". Then they got to be parent figures to Lydia and have a hand in raising her. So they were then able to cross over once she grew up
I figured that them being ghosts that they’d have to look the same. Love Geena Davis. I had thought a cameo but they could move on.
It's been over 30 yrs and I believe it's time for a resurrection no pun intended!👻
no... it was a lot worse than that...
I'll say it. He was found guilty on charges of possession of CP
@@caffeinatedkatie4696 who?
@@nevermore5168 Jeffery Jones. That's why he wasn't in the movie
@@caffeinatedkatie4696 ok I don't know what CP stands for all I knew was what I heard and that was the sex scandal thing.
Astrid: "Why don't we get the attic ghosts to help out?"
Lydia: "They're not here anymore. We found a loophole in the rules and they moved on."
Astrid: "That's convenient."
Me: "Yes, it is."
Micheal Keaton had a resurgence? He never stopped working in successful movies. what are people talking about?
I think it could be argued there was a resurgence of Michael Keaton in lead roles. He did supporting roles throughout most of the 00s, with exceptions like Jack Frost and White Noise.
There's nothing like the feeling of a Burton film. Thank goodness Tim was involved in the sequel.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was so amazing.
They were not in the cartoon too
I love Michael Keaton's final take on Beetlejuice.
"Just as suave as ever."
I had very low expectatons for this movie. I loved the first one, but I had concerns. I'm glad the sequel turned out better than I thought.
I love me some Geena Davis!❤❤❤❤ gorgeous and timeless beauty
The whole movie is based around Gina and Alex characters. Even though it’s called Beetlejuice, it’s their movie. They are definitely going to be missed.
The Maitland characters don’t need to be in this one. They weren’t even in the cartoon series.
@@RocStarr913yeah cause that series holds up so well 😂
This sequel makes a good transition from the first movie to something alike the animated series
I think he was more focused on the idea of beetlejuice background.. Think about the serk peak where we saw beetlejuice talking about how he died... If there's a third film maybe Tim Burton will find a way to bring them back...
Just saw the movie. Soooooo much fun ! Loved it 😊
I expected them not to return because ghosts don’t age.
And if they did, it would've been alot of de-aging tech tacked on to them. I'm surprised they didn't CG Keaton's neck to look like it did in '88
This new movie was fun, I m glad I seen it, Its weird to get a sequel after so long and it really felt like a proper sequel in the spirit of the original.
Just saw it today, definitely has the spirit of the OG but very different and modern.
Of course, Delia is actually Lydia's stepmother.
My only question is how do they go about explaining it. First movie said they gotta be ghosts for 125 years. So passively saying “they found a loop hole” doesn’t do it for me. If the Deetzs has been likeable characters I would mind a little less.
The loophole doesn’t mean they aren’t ghost. Maybe they are just in the underworld hanging out in a nice little cafe.
I saw the original in the theater and had the same experience. I don’t care what anybody says. I loved it Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
I'm more disappointed Otho won't be in it.
Well, Glenn Shadix is dead
@@RocStarr913 That doesn't mean I'm not disappointed.
I would have liked to see a nice cameo from the Maitlands, even if it was brief, just to see them happy and have them, at least, included in the movie. I kind of feel like they got snubbed a little, honestly. 😕
You have the three mains in it so I am good. I am good with the others moving on and at peace.
Catherine O ‘hara was absolutely breathtaking
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice looks good. Going to see it. This weekend with a good friend. Sorry for Geenia Davis and Alec Baldwin. Not getting to come back. Nice to see Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder again. A long with a new cast of characters. This should be good. It's Show Time.
I am glad they acknowledged them and why they left
Kinda sad to hear they won't be featured but I understand why.
There was a nice little Easter egg during the intro if you have a sharp eye.
I do hope that they are at least mentioned in the new one.
Probably didn't call Alec back because of his court issues. Didn't want anyone at risk of getting....well, um.... "hit".
I’m very disappointed! I loved the Maitlands
In the sequel, Lydia can talk to the dead, right? She has a TV show. So maybe she helped the Maitlands cross over.
Thw Maitland’s story was done in the first movie. But they did shown that car accident on that town diorama.
I happy to find out that, Adam & Barbara characters, found a loophole, so that they can go to Heaven.
Also, no mention that Otho probably died in the movie universe, like the real actor!
Honestly, as long as the characters are mentioned and we know what happened to them, I think that’s fine. I’m probably not going to see this just because I think I’ve outgrown that character, but Tim Burton always puts the story first. I imagine it’s going to be pretty good.
I am mad they didn't pay respects to Otho.
They definitely would not have fit in this story. A cameo maybe could've worked but wouldn't have added much beyond "hey, look at these guys." As it is the movie could've used another 20 minutes to flesh out at least 2 of the plot threads they did have.
0:58, did you always have this speech format?
1:24, highlights what I mean.
I loved the sequel
I also include the cartoon into the Beetlejuice universe so my theory is that this is another adventure with Beetlejuice and Lydia, and those characters were from another storyline.
"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" was one of those rare movies where the trailers were so much better than the film
Barbara has always been my favorite character from the original. I was devastated to find out that in the maitlands were in the new film
