always good to see some recommendations - some older recs: Diane Duane So You want to Be a Wizard; Meredith Ann Pierce Birth of the Firebringer, Robin McKinley The Blue Sword or The Hero and the Crown; Jessica Day George has nice light fantasy novels for younger middle grade readers as well.

The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton is also a great magical school series.

I’ve only read Amari and nevermoor but I loved them both. I definitely want to read Tristan strong!

Dragon Pearl is intriguing me. I added that to my TBR. I adore Nevermoor with my whole heart. 2 years ago, I preordered book 4. I hope it doesn't get delayed again.🙏
I recommend Dragonrider by Cornelia Funk and Greenwild by Pari Thomson. Also, the Wilderlore series by Amanda Foody. All of those are fantasy books.

I think this is the first time I've seen someone on yt mention the Wings of Fire books. They really are underrated! I actually discovered them myself because my little sister was obsessed with them😂
Though fair warning to anyone considering them for their kids: they really are pretty violent for a middle grade series and the characters have to deal with some pretty traumatizing stuff, so I would recommend them for older middle grade.

I adore Amari 💕💕 It brought back a brand of wonder I was worried I couldn’t recapture while exploring real things. Can’t wait for the next book!

I love Sayantani DasGupta's MG books, starting with The Serpent's Secret. The series is funny and so smart and so satisfying. It brings together Bengali folktales, string-theory, and fart jokes. And it even made me tear up, which does not happen very often!

I've read The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Amari series, Percy Jackson, and Nevermoor and it's sequel which were all great! The school of good and evil is on my TBR. I just finished the Serafina series by Robert Beatty and that has become my new favorite. Def. would recommend.

I'm so glad you did this video. I'm on hold for the audiobook of Percy Jackson.

My 10-year-old is obsessed with the Sal and Gabi books and the Aru Shah series. I'm partial to Sal and Gabi because the humor is top notch. The audiobooks of both series are very well done, as well.

The Grimwood series by Nadia Shireen is good - recommended by my niece. She also writes and illustrates picture books.

This makes me want to pick up The Odds asap.
Some other mg fantasy books I would recommend: pretty much anything from Diana Wynne Jones (her most famous one ofc is Howls Moving Castle, and it's great, but I also would recommend her Chrestomanci series), The Underland chronicles by Suzanne Collins (yes, from THG fame) and The Fairyland series by Catherynne Valente

I agree with the Diana Wynne Jones recommendation - her books are great for adults as well.

I second The Fairyland Series by Catherynne Valente! They are so good. And this might be bordering on young YA/older middle grade, but A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher is also great.

I’ve read and loved quite a few of your recs, and I’m definitely noting down the rest to check out! One of my most recent middle grade favorites was The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi.

I found the circle of magic books so-so but all Tamora Pierce Tortall series are excellent.

Awesome video with really fabulous recommendations! My students absolutely love the Wings of Fire series and it is a solid favorite that has lasted for years!! I just met Abeni's Song's author and cannot wait to read that one- love hearing it shouted out here! You must read the rest of the Nevermoor series- it just keeps getting better. A magical school series that never gets enough love is the Iron Trials by Claire and Black- in case you wanted a recommendation. Great video as always!! ❤

Thank you, that’s great to hear!! Wings of Fire is a big favorite here too. And yes, I didn’t even think of Iron Trials! I enjoyed what I read of those but haven’t finished.

Love, Sugar Magic by Anna Meriano is a delightful series with baking magic and a little sister who is desperately wanting to keep up with her big sisters.
The Grimm Legacy Series by Polly Shulman. About a very special library that has some very special collections.

    How appropriate are these books?
Our daughter just turned 10 and just got into reading wich we are thrilled by, but we want to make sure what she reads is appropriate.
We are very strict about the media she can watch/ read and dont want her watching or reading anything innapropriate.
Anything with violence, sex, drugs, swearing or dark themes is not allowed and the good guys have to win in the end.
These books sound like she would really enjoy them but we want to make sure they're appropriate before we let her team them.
