Putting the Cylinder Drive System and Belts on the JD 4400 combine

  • Well I got the new shaft for the idler pulley for the variable speed cylinder drive belt so now its time to put it together and on the combine so I can put the pulley set back on and get the belts put on. I put the shaft and pulley back together and on the machine then it was getting that big mother humper of a pulley set back up and one the combine, There is not a lot of room to work in under the side witch made it a we bit harder to do to say the least ! Did I mention its rather heavy too ! But I got it in there and got the new cylinder drive belts put on and then it was the big drive belt and it was pain in the butt to get on but it finally went on and I got to outside support put back in and everything tightened up. I had to get my book out to time the pulley set back together and I think I've got it now, I might have to make a minor adjustment once I get it running. But the right side of the combine all the belts are on now and there all new belts from JD and Shoup and now the test has started ! The Oliver 1850 is leaving tomorrow, Its going down to McHenry's to have the injector pump taken off for a rebuild and Harry is going to be looking into the injector pump drive system for problems. While its gone and the Long is outside I'll move the combine so I can start working on the other side. I hope you enjoyed watching and sorry its so long. Bandit

I can tell you this, even a John Deere 3010 tractor can be a pain in the butt just changing the fan belt! Mainly because of the hydraulic pump running off the crankshaft! Uncoupling the linkage where you can’t even get a socket in there and having to use an open end wrench making only quarter turns at a time will make you use some words! Lol That combine looks like a lot of fun to work on, but in the end,I’m sure it will be worth it! Good luck!!

Oh trust me I know ! A could of 3010's a 3020 a couple 4010 and 4020 gas and diesels and there never fun to change the fan belts on ! Never understood why they put the hydraulic pumps out front like they did cause no one else did that ! These combines could have been designed a lot better as far as belts go, But it is what it is and I have to deal with it like it or not . This is the first time I've been this deep into a 4400 combine but it will be worth it when I can roll threw the beans with no problems belt wise. But I think I'm going to enjoy cutting beans this fall ! Bandit

I'm just glad I have a parts machine sitting outside cause I've had to get a few parts off it for mine, I needed the center of the drive pulley and a couple of other pulleys off it too ! I'm putting all new belts on it and as I go if I see something else wrong I'm fixing it. I've never put all new belts on a combine before and had this combine had more hours on it say 3500 hours I doubt I would have done this to it, But it being 1 owner 1200 hour machine that is in good shape a new set of belts on it will make it last for a long time longer ! This will be the first year I'll go to the field with no worries about belts in my life ! LOL I really hope that it goes nice and smooth for a change cutting beans ! Cousin Bandit

Jan its been a lot of hard work getting to this point and I know the other side is going to be even harder to do because of everything you have to work around and I have to take the drive tire off. It should come off easy as it went on really easy when I put the rice tires on it. But with the tire off it will make getting to everything a lot easer to work on and get to so I'm all for that ! LOL Any thing to make the job easer I'm all for it ! There is one easy belt to change and I think I'll start off with the easiest one first cause I know the rest will be a real bugger to get to and change. I'm not looking forward to taking the seat out of the cab and opening it up so I can get to belts to change them ! This should have been designed a lot better than it was thats for sure ! One side done and one to go , I think I'll have a beer when I get it done ! Bandit

@@jankotze1959 Man they has been a time or two I needed one to settle my nerves ! Not so much on the right side but for sure on the left side ! By the time I got done I had several good sized knots on my head from hitting things and being agrovated by bolts put in places you just cant get too and trying to get in places I was never ment to get into ! LOL I had to call Jacob one time to come over to get some bolts in I just could not for the life of me get back in . This combine was made for a stick person to work on, LOL not someone my size ! LOL Even Jacob was having a hard time getting the bolts back in, Now I know why on so many of these combines I've seen things missing cause you just cant get to them to put them back on ! Dad like my idea of getting another fridge and stocking it with water and beer ! Bandit

This was a long video but that was a lot of work. Worst repair job ever on my 3300 was the bearing on the rasp bar cylinder on that side of the combine. Thanks for taking us on your adventure Bandit.

I tried to figure out how to make it shorter but there was a lot going on in it so if I sped it up you might have missed something I said or did, But I think the rest of the video's will be a lot shorter I'm pretty sure of that. I had to put a main shaft bearing on my old JD 95 and it was over my head and there was about 150 pounds worth of pullies I had to take off to get to it without dropping it ! Me dad and our buddy Dean spent a day getting the pullies off getting the bearing off and changed and put back together and I'm telling you what the truth we were worn out at the end of the day. Used a tractor and loader ropes and pulleys and a chain hoist with stuff rigged up that would have made OSHA run away screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!! LOL But we got the job done and it was running again ! Cousin Bandit

@@banditfarmer1900 Bandit there's a lot of stuff going on on that side of the combine it takes a long time to do what you did I'm not saying anything negative about the length of the video I'm glad you kept the length of it as you did. I really hope you go into a lot of detail about getting that pump off the rear of the engine so you can slip that belt through there.

@@SoybeanFarmer3300 The belts on that side of the combine are something else, I dont believe I ever seen another combine with as many belts on a side in such a small area ! LOL If most people got under the side of one of these combines looked at how the belts are put on and you told them they had to change them would simply walk away saying no way no how ! I took that pulley set off to fix the idler pulley behind it and after I got it put back on and looked at it I really dont know how you could put the 3 cylinder drive belts on it unless you took it (pulley set) loose like I did to get those belts on. My book doesnt say anything on how to change some of these belts and they really should. This is one of the reasons I left this video long, So everyone could see how big of a pain this is to do ! LOL Just think what JD would have charged to change all the belts like I did ! I would hate to see that bill ! I have video taking the hydraulic pump off , Might not be the best angle but then again there is no good place to put the camera that it wouldnt be in my way to work . But the video is coming cuz ! Well its time to get the rest of the belts put on the right side of the 4400 combine and my cousin made a new shaft to replace the bad one I took off thats for the variable speed drive belt. I got the idler pulley put back together and on the machine and not I can put the big pulley set back on that drives the cylinder, Did I mention its very heavy ! There is not a lot of room under the side of the machine to work so that makes getting the pulley set back up in there a real challenge to say the least ! Once the pulley set is up in the holder about 1/2 way you got to put the new belts on that drive the cylinder on it before you get the pulley set all the way on or its going to make for one tough job to get them on if you don't ! Once its one you can put the belts on the cylinder (just dont adjust them yet) then I put the variable speed cylinder drive belt on and it was a job to get it on. Once the belts are back on I got the outside support put back on and tightened up and started adjusting the belts up tight and I had to get my book out to read how to time the pulleys back together. Other than making a monor adjustment or two once its in the field its all done ! All the belts are on now on the right side and there from Shoup and JD so now my test begins ! Sorry for it being so long but this was not a rush threw it job ! Now the 1850 is leaving tomorrow and while its out and the Long is out I'll move the combine back some so I can start working on the other side ! This is going to be the hard side to replace all the belts on ! I hope you enjoyed watching and maybe you learned something new, I know I sure did ! Bandit

I did a lot of work on the right side no doubt about it but the other side is going to be even harder ! But when I'm done I know its going to be right and I know I'll have to do a bunch of adjusting when I start cutting beans but after that I think it will be smooth cutting from there on out. I'm really going to keep an eye on the belts to see if I can see anything going wrong with them and how they ware, I think it will be a fair test between JD and Shoup belts. It wont be a perfect test but I figure it will be a fair one anyway. Now I just got to wait and see what happens. Bandit

We have a R-52 Gleaner & a John Deere 8820 & 8 times out of 10 i'd rather have to work on the Gleaner. Even on the Gleaner though there's been times i've wanted to strangle the engineers who designed something. I think that's normal on equipment though.
The good thing with the 8820 is we have a John Deere mechanic less than a mile away. Costs extra to fix but better for my sanity. lol

I think if JD had built a more refined 95 and 105 they would have had one hell of a machine ! My old 95 will cut circles around the 4400 hands down and the 95 will eat more corn too. But they modernized but man replacing a 95 with a 4400 I think they went the wrong way for sure and it took them several years to figure it out. The one thing I still dont understand is why the 4400 series combines had such high engine rpm's ? Gas or diesel they had them wound up high, If a guy could repower a 4400 with say a 354 Perkins you would have a real combine to content with. But there are things about the 4400 I dont care for like the weak springs they put on all the belt adjusters, Could have done a better job on those for sure. I ran a lot of Gleaners years ago from the A's E's K's F's C2 and they were solid machines and were easy enough to work on. My C2 was one of the last ones built and I had 3 guys in grain trucks really hopping trying to keep the corn away from it , Mill was 4 miles away and all the trucks would hold 350 bu easy . By the end of the day they had made 5 trips each and I had 6 gravity wagons sitting there full (maybe 800 bu) and the 3 trucks were full (mill closed at 6pm Friday night) . Man I loved that old C2 it was a corn shelling fool ! But me a the dealer went round and round over a bad belt and he wouldnt do anything, He told us the we didnt buy enough from him to make it worth his time to do anything for us ! I told him he had got the last dime he would ever get from me ! I sold the Gleaners and all the AC stuff and went Oliver and JD and I havent looked back ! Bandit

Well so far over the years I've had better luck getting parts I needed from the old Oliver dealership and John Deere, I really dont have a local tractor dealership as far as the new stuff very close , There 25 miles or more to any dealer I.E. JD IH NH/Ford MF ect. I was surprised that JD no longer carries the little shaft that went bad as its a commend part in the 3300 4400 6600 7700 and 8820. No big deal as my cousin made me a couple for nothing , He likes to make little stuff like this as most of the stuff he turns is complacated . This is a 3/4" shaft with a grove for a snap ring and a 1/4" hole drilled threw it for a spring pin, In other words easy to make ! LOL Its not often I go to JD and they say we cant get the parts anymore so I'll give them credit for that as there better than a lot of other brands. But I still like my Oliver's better ! LOL Bandit

@@Jane-rq7sv As parts go I think I've had good luck with there parts and them being able to get them for older stuff I run. I dont want equipment I cant get parts for and a lot of the older equipment is getting to the point that there are no new parts for them and that is the big reason why Jacob bought a JD 300 picker ! I got a MM picker and at best if your lucky you might find a part or two in old dealer stock, New parts haven't been made in decades . But JD still carries a lot of parts for the 300 and there is a guy in PA that is making parts for them. Try finding parts for a Case or even a Ford baler ! LOL Aint none ! So you got to keep that in mind when your looking at equipment. I've been lucky all my life as far as getting machining done, My one cousin has his own machine shop and he enjoys the stuff I bring to him to fix or make, Its more strait forward and simple to do. He does a lot of work in plastic parts , I never would have dreamer turning plastic would be hard to do but its harder to turn than steel is by far ! He works for a pump company but has a machine shop at home and works out of his garage (big one) so he keeps himself busy ! Its nice to have family that can do things for you ! Bandit
