They want him dead so they can take over the treasury and thus control all finances of the state. No one can do anything without the treasury. So like, if a road needs to be repaired, or starving people need to be fed, someone will have to apply for a certain amount and go to the treasury to get money. The ones in charge can give or not give and if they decide to move the state's money to their personal account, no one will know. Think of it like this: the treasury is the biggest bank in the world, the one that sends money anyehere that it's needed. If you have control over it, you basically have control of the world. AND you're rich as he'll because all the money in the world is yours to use. You can also manipulate the records so no one will know IF they investigate you cuz you're the prince so you're above everyone except your parents so you basically get away with using the state's money as your own personal ATM machine. With endless money.
