Man, these pre-soundblaster PC speaker effects are just hilarious! Fond memories of this game, too. Was one of he first I've ever played on the pc of my dad. On a 5 1/4" floppy disk.
I clocked this game. Once you reach 1 000-0000 it runs out of ability to track your score and it goes back to 0. So I quit... man was I late to school that day.
Yeah, like many old games. Here in Brazil, when you finished a game, we used to say "zerar o jogo" ("zeroed the game"). This expression came from this old games, where the score were reset to 0 once you achieve a limit score.
That Street Dog that comes at you if you dawdle too long and dont hop on the bins, what a terrifying game villain, Proto-Nemesis, "SssS.T.A.R.S (C.A.T.)..." lol thanks for the upload this brought back alot of fun memories! ^_^
Well, I never came close to a game THAT long, and then to think you never crawled thought he holes in the big cheese (alt), or gave presents to get rid of the cats on the lower levels in order to get to the female at the top. Not to mention that making more and more tracks to keep the broom occupied longer as something that also never happens.... Quite an achievement
That's impressive! I think I remember trying to run it on our Hercules graphics card, using CGA emulation. I think it worked only for the cyan/blue/white pallet, so as you entered a window, I wouldn't see anything! Only much later did I find out there are many mini games inside this 30kB gem :-)
When your cat is hanging on one of the cheese holes pressing alt will make him/her go into that hole and come out on another - very helpful for ambushing the mice. The holes are paired and after a while you'll remember which hole goes where.
I don't remember if I ever figured that out. But I do remember when I found out some button will eat the dog bowls. I didn't have any manual or anything, it was all trial and error.
I remember playing this game on my IBM XT with a monochromatic display (black and green only). This was one of the 3 games that I had in that computer. The other two were a racing game and a memory game.

You can long-jump straight up (as opposed to diagonally) by getting to the fast running speed, then stop running and immediately jump up. It's a much easier way to get on the trash bins in the higher levels and to get up in the bonus level.
I think there's a key that lets you place the gifts that you pick up in the Meow screen. If an orange cat walks into a gift, he disappears, or something like that. Also: 36:49 - oh, I can feel the rage there!
Legend! However I notice that you didn't use the alt key at any point - useful in the cheese room and dropping decoy presents for the cats guarding the female cat.
I loved this when it came out. It was so much fun and it was also very loud if you kept the sound on. I remember playing it years later late at night in the lab and having the scientist down the hall come down to find out where the sound was coming from. Last time I tried you could still get it to work in emulation mode on some PCs. The whole thing fit in a single tiny executable including all the sounds and graphics. Amazing.
Playing this game in my youth was what inspired me to have pet canaries in adulthood! They are even cuter in real life than in this game. ...Their little peeps and chirps!
If you don't mind cheating, you can press ctrl+9 to get nine lives. Also in my version of this game the number of lives is stored at the 8065th byte in the executable. If you disable the instructions decreasing its value you won't loose any lives.
You seem unaware that the "alt" key performs several useful functions in the game. Namely, going through the holes in the cheese and giving the presents to the female cats.
I wish I could play this fully on my 8088. The game gets REEEALLY slow when swimming in the fishbowl, even though it's a turbo machine running at 8Mhz. :(((
48 minutes is nothing compared to how long I had to survive a single game for. Then again; most of the games I have played are much more modern with autosave so I took breaks frequently. Still, though.
On the screen for meeting the white girl cat, what if you picked up the gifts left at the bottom and 1 by 1 put them on the top row before picking up the last one and touching her?
I always hated the spider one! I remebered trying to fast for the mother******, but in the end, it was always either THAT thing or the dog; but it was always the first.
If you're just going for the longest game, there's a point in the game where you don't have to actively dodge anything. If you finish any of the first level windows, and all the windows change to the ones with the female cat, nobody's throwing anything out of the window. You can just hop on the fence and sit there forever. Of course that wouldn't really be playing the game anymore, but there you go.
You got the dog food level so many times. That was my favorite. However, why aren't you using the tab button for the cheese level and why aren't you dropping the presents to neutralize the other cats on the bonus level?
Can this game ever be finished? I can see that at the end you have finished the female kitty level a couple of times, still you don't move further... Btw, there is an ultra-simple cheat: Ctrl+9 gives you nine lives and you can use it indefinitely.

No prob. :) It's the programmer's fault for not explaining on the help screen. "The alt key performs special actions" isn't enough information. I know memory was expensive in those days, but really! 9_9
OMG I used to play this frigging game for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages. It had the best music of any game I had played.... err, at the time.

I was terrified every time I got the dog room.
What is scaring is that, when the dog comes, all becomes silent. Everyone fears the dogs.

u could use "alt" to go through cheese holes.
and to fool them cats.
that's a trick not many people know hehe
when the cat jumps into the aquarium suddenly the size gets much bigger
I used to play this game all the time when I was a child. Looking back at it now, I realize how much I relate to the black cat.

lol@sound of the Cat flying when the broom hits it
Incredibly original and stylish game, not to mention well programmed. Bravo.
This was one of the first games I ever played.
I'm working on a short video segment on it.
Let me say this: You play a hell of a lot better than I do.
The Icy Tower character made of this game's protagonist is spot on, it seems!
The difficulty of this game is brutal.
I think there's a key that lets you place the gifts that you pick up in the Meow screen. If an orange cat walks into a gift, he disappears, or something like that.
Also: 36:49 - oh, I can feel the rage there!
This. Also, same key allowed you to skip through the holes in the giant cheese :)
Yep, it's "Alt" key. You can also go inside the whole of the large cheese to suddenly appear from another whole - same way - "Alt" key. ;)
Legend! However I notice that you didn't use the alt key at any point - useful in the cheese room and dropping decoy presents for the cats guarding the female cat.
the most secretive part was quitting the game: CTRL + Y....

God I loved that game. Never could bet it nor understand the point or main goal of the game, but shit was it fun! Man that broom was annoying...

OMG.... i stil remember this game.. i played it in my childhood.. thank you so much for sharing this with us😔❤❤
I hate games without ending.
In this case, level 30 is the highest, but there it´s infinite.
This has to be the craziest DOS game I've ever seen. And I've seen my share.
I played this for hours in the 80s. I miss it.
Dude, you can enter the holes in the cheese to catch the mice!!
was thinking same thing- pretty sure u press alt :)
Yes, and alt also worked for 'dropping' presents for the jealous cats in the jump-the-hearts levels.
In the level with the mice in the swiss cheese you can go inside the holes. It makes it much easier to avoid the broom.
In the early 90 I loved this game and its colors
7:30 you can use the presents, to get rid of some of the cats in the inbetween levels.
In the room with the sleeping dogs, if you hold the ALT key in front of a dish, the cat will drink the milk in the bowl. That's the goal in that room.
Is this game #alleycats available in any form now???
That dog room is scary as fuck
If you don't mind cheating, you can press ctrl+9 to get nine lives. Also in my version of this game the number of lives is stored at the 8065th byte in the executable. If you disable the instructions decreasing its value you won't loose any lives.
Is there a way to erase the dog from that file ?
What crazy person keeps electric eels in their fishbowl?
It's not a fishbowl it's a portal to a lake
hahaha
Guess those are not electric eels, but waves
Or a big ass block of cheese in their house?
hahhahah

You can use those extra gufts to remove toms from other levels
I was very good at this game, addicted to it. Good memories.
Is it possible to finish this game? I guess it can just go on forever if you stay alive
why is it so hard for me to jump over the dog? lol
