why wouldn't the cat take the best or only spot, no sign of cat friendly perches and pillows in most of these... the owners are guilty of not supplying equal opportunities.

That's jumping to conclusion. Our cat beds are not located near the dog bed. Besides, that's just the nature of the cat. They get bored after a while and find a good old box to sleep in.
