Burn is a fantastic album. A shining star in the Deep Purple catalog. I still play it on a regular basis. 👏

The guitar solo in A200 is probably the most epic sounding solo ever. I always imagined as the scorched horizon left behind by the song Burn.

House Of Blue Light was my first new Deep Purple at the time it came out and I bought a ticket for a concert in Rotterdam (the second performance). Great show, but again not much later that Mark II broak up. Now I have bought ticket to see them for the second time, just in a couple of weeks from now.... I am getting fired up with my old body...

I agree with you Phil, the drumming is absolutely stunning on the title track. A drum solo during the verses would normally be considered overplaying but Ian Paice does it in such a musical way that it makes the song even more exciting. And speaking of stunning drumming, this album contains three drum-intense songs: Burn, Lay Down Stay Down and You Fool No One; more than any other Deep Purple studio album.

A fantastic selection of Burn memorabilia. Burn is easily my favourite Deep Purple album, I still get a lot of enjoyment spinning my old vinyl copy. I was lucky enough to see Whitesnake recently in Dublin on their fairwell tour where they performed the song Burn, a fantastic live piece of music, whilst David Coverdale can't quite reach the notes from 1974, it was performed with much respect, fun & good vibes.

Hello Mr. Aston well describe your passion for the music you love. Back in 1974 I was 1 year old! yes 1 year. Right after listening "Still of the Night" I learned Mr. Coverdale previous band, So Deep Purple shows up and BURN was the album. But It was not untill 1995 I had the chance to listen in full. Thank you again for your time and teach us about how music is part of our lives. Take care. Cheers!

Richie Blackmore is my all time favorite guitar player, the man is a musical genius. Nobody in rock or metal has written such creative guitar riffs and solos. Toni iommi would be a very close second in my opinion. What Richie done in purple and then rainbow is magical.

I agree with you absolutely. 'A' 200 is a great song by Deep Purple. Many people think it's a bad filler but the song is a strong statement with a really powerful guitar solo by Ritchie. I love that solo so much. Ritchie never played anything like it remotely again. To me this track is ingenious, a coming tornado. You appreciated the album very well, Burn deserves it, a highlight in their career. I wished in 1974 that the candles would never go out. You did an excellent job on this upload. By the way i have a dream. The 50th anniversary release in 2024 with five real candles in a strictly limited box edition and much more unreleased material. Dreams can sometimes come true.

Burn is my favourite DP-album. In Rock may have been the gamechanger and Machine Head contained a lot of DP-staples but Burn is the pinnacle when it comes to bluesy hard rock presented with convidence and style from start to finish. It‘s the magic frozen point in time when Blackmore was lucky to get rid of Gillan/Glover and not yet fed up with Hughes/Coverdale and the funky stuff to come. Which of course doesn’t mean that Ritchie has ever been lucky being in DP at any point in time😊.

Love it Phil. Like you I got the cassette version first (incredible how minimalist the packaging was for them at the time) and later the vinyl. Loaned out the latter and never got it back (that was quite common but I was never guilty of it). Fast forward over thirty years and picked up the 30th anniversary CD set as part of the two for £10 deal that HMV used to do. Better still, I managed to score a near mint vinyl copy for £8 at a record fair. Love the look of the Japanese import, these are always a little special as they are a touch exotic.

Burn was my intro to DP in the mid seventies and it still remains by far my favorite DP album. This and then Made in Europe. Gillan was great but Coverdale brought the blues to DP and Blackmore evolved his mastery of the riff to even greater heights during this period. Having everything up to Bolin's sad demise, Burn still remains firmly at the number One spot for me. I got to see the latter day lineups of Rainbow and Blackmore but would have happily traded those gigs for just one from the Burn tour. Fab collection you've got there.

    And Phil, I am really inspired by the passion that you have shown in describing the history of this album. Equally interesting is your experience in your school dance! My personal favorites in order;
    1. Machine head

Hi Phil, is there any truth that Ritchie was having problems with his onstage sound at the Birmingham Odeon ? I’ve read that Ritchie stropped off to his dressing room at the Birmingham Odeon,at some point. You were there,so you can lay rumour this to rest. P.S I would like to hear/see Simon Robinson from the DPAS on your channel. Simon’s service to the Deep Purple fan base since the mid-late 70’s is often remembered fondly by fans of a certain age.

It’s true, this happened on the first night. A friend from school went and said Blackmore disappeared a lot and played with his back to the audience or behind the amps. Luckily I went the next night and he was fantastic, running around the stage and even smashing his guitar at the end.

Hi Phil, I was just 17 when it was first released and I totally ignored it, being under the deluded impression that without Ian Gillan they should have packed it in. In 1975 I bought Come Taste The Band because I was, and still am, a massive Tommy Bolin fan. The title track is one of the most Purple songs ever in that every single member contributes such killer parts to it. You can also hear hints of the funkiness in several songs that would become more pronounced on Stormbringer. And then, of course, there is “Mistreated,” which is the song that is the natural successor to the Machine Head album and became one of the most powerful songs for Purple, Rainbow, and even Whitesnake, with many great performances of it by Glenn Hughes in his solo work.

  • @mikewhiteley641
    @mikewhiteley641 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bravo Phil !!
Your admiration & enthusiasm for BURN (album & song) is infectious.".....lashings of lush Hammond organ from Jon Lord". Brilliant !
The one thing I'd like to mention is the funk/soul that infuses the bluesy boogie of What's Goin' On Here. It is the first time that these elements were found on a DP album, Of course,,this thread continued through the Coverdale/Hughes era. Love Don't Mean A Thing. You Can't Do It Right, Hold On, and most obviously, after Ritchie left,. Gettin' Tighter. These songs were not what long time Purple fans had come to expect, to say the least.
I also noted that Elf's singer is named" Ronnie Duo" in the programme !! Ha !

Excellent feature. I first got into DP when I traded ‘The Song Remains The Same’ soundtrack for ‘Burn’ & ‘Stormbringer’. When Ian Paice isn’t drumming on ‘Burn’, the song takes a noticeable dip in terms of excitement. Also in recent times the key get drops and it loses a lot as well. If only ‘ Stormbringer’ had the same production as ‘Burn’.The latter has always sounded flat & muffled on its Rockier songs. Glenn’s Bass is a little buried in the mix at times on the title track, but you can find Glenn’s Bass track isolated online, and do what you will. I would like to see the considerably more fanfare for the 50th anniversary of the Burn album. Classic Album dvd presentation along with a full remix of the album. I totally agree with you about Ritchie’s playing and sound circa ‘74.

Really enjoyed watching this. I remember those old gold-topped EMI cassettes. Just seeing your copy here brings back memories of my old local record shop which used to stock them. Like you pointed out, there was little in the way of info included, but I thought they looked great. Back then many albums (not just on EMI) featured a different running order to the LP version. I still have my copy of Diamond Dogs by Bowie, which I initially bought on cassette from the local chemist shop in the village where I grew up. How weird that sounds now, a chemists with a spin-rack full of (then) current hit albums on cassette. And like your copy of Burn, Diamond Dogs had a very different running order to the LP version. I was so used to hearing the cassette version, it took me quite a while to get used to hearing the songs in the true running order on the LP version a few years later. Anyway, fascinating to see all the memorabilia on show here.

Thanks for explaining just how and why Burn, the song, moves you as much as it does - I see it also as the most exciting rock song. Play it for your mates and they'll want to hear it again - and they'll enjoy it so much they won't bother with the rest of the album! To us, though, it's consistently brilliant. Being country-born and -raised, Purple's music always brings to my mind landscapes, plains and storms, trees blowing wildly - and Blackmore's playing has the frisson of an abandoned, possibly haunted homestead. It's just not industrial, however heavy it gets. Although Physical Graffiti's a very interesting album, it's not as exciting as Burn. Loved all the paraphernalia - that badge!
Funnily enough, that guitar sound seems to make reappearances on Down to Earth as well as Rising - and possibly on Stranger in Us All.
Mk.3, and the Burn album in particular, seem to have all the best elements of Mk.1 and Mk.2. 🔥🌈⚡☂🌳

Enjoyed your journey through this album Phil. One of my favourites but CTTB remains at the top of my list with Purpendicular a close 2nd. I'm sure i will be castigated for not included the usual 'suspects'. Anyway the 30th Anniversary edition of Burn contains a fantastic instrumental Coronarias Redig. Although it is unfinished i think this could have been a contender to be on the main album.

Hi Barrie, thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. I think it’s great you put CTTB in first place! Purpendicular is a fantastic album as well. Phil :)

Great stuff Phil. Thank you for sharing your experiences and very informative. Only just started listening to DP - better late than never. Burn is a really great album and for me Burn isn't the best track! Hughes and Coverdale work so well together and convey a real fun feel at the time. Cheers!

Hi, thank you for watching and nothing wrong at all with just discovering Deep
Purple. We were all there once ourselves! What is your favourite track off Burn? Phil :)

Phil - I couldn't say a favourite as they are all excellent. Also new to me. The instrumentals fit so well too. For almost 20 years the only version of Burn itself I knew was the one on Glenns From Now On cd. That is just great as is the cd which is top quality.

i was disappointed with the "who do we think we are" album in 1973, it sounded directionless and scrappy, i since got to love it but "Burn" was definitely a return to form!

Hi, thank you for watching, I agree it is a great track and the duel vocals from Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale also make it very special as well. Phil :)

Burn, You Fool No One and Sail Away are the three I love. I prefer the MiE version of Mistreated.

Does anyone have proof showing Deep Purple was the top selling band in the world in 1973. I’m debating it with an American smart ass who’s telling me that in no way they were even close because that same year the Beatles released two greatest hits albums and also Dark Side of the Moon was that same year.

They were certainly the top selling band in the USA in 1973, I have a press cutting from Billboard magazine somewhere.

Type these words into your Search Engins:
Purple sells 14 million Certified albums in 17 months.
Purple sold more record than Zeppelin, the Stones and Pink Floyd combined.
By the way that's only 14 million Certified albums in the US alone !
Led Zeppelin fans get butt hurt also.
Parochial US Zeppelin fans won't accept this.
