Dating back to the early nineteenth century, the lyrics for Silent Night were written by Josef Mohr, a priest from Salzburg in Austria as a carol of worship. He met the composer Franz Xaver Gruber in 1815 and on Christmas Eve 1818, visited Gruber with his poem and Gruber quickly arranged it into a song played on guitar. That evening he led the congregation at St Nicholas Church in the first rendition of Silent Night.
Today Silent Night is perhaps one of the most famous Christmas Carols ever written. The carol itself was even declared to be an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011.
