I love rutabagas. My mother used to fix it about every two weeks for us. My mother’s been gone since 2009. But when I was about 20 years old, I’m 71 now, Mom taught me how to fix rutabagas. So with a rutabaga and a butcher knife I my first attempt then I slept I sliced my wrist not gonna dip it in a Band-Aid covered it but from then on we referred to it as the suicide vegetable. I haven’t had it since about 2005 so I’m looking to fix it thank you for your tips God bless and mask up 2021 is finally here
Generations of my family have eaten rutabega. Growing up, it was at every holiday meal. We make it like you would make mashed potatoes. It does seem like most of the girls in my family like it more than the guys, though. Lol And yes, you need to be very careful preparing rutabega. Also, be careful not to let the peels get into your garbage disposal. My mom would peel over the sink but would scoop the peels out of the sink and into the garbage. She didn't notice a few that got down the drain, and when she used her disposal, it jammed up. Thanks for this great video tip.
I love rutabaga! The only problem is that I have NO strength in my hands, so I haven't had it since my husband passed away in 2007 - he was the one who peeled and cut them for me. I'm so happy to have learned about putting it in the microwave, rutabaga is one of my favorite vegetables and I've missed it very much. I have a little story about rutabaga, I once had some leftover and took it to work for lunch. A friend asked what it was when I told her, her eyes got as big as saucers and she asked "You eat those?" Where I come from, we feed them to the livestock! I guess that's what they do in upstate New York.
Thank you! Good information. I didn't realize until the end that this came from USU 4-H. Aggie here who chose USU after summer 4-H activities on campus. Nostalgia alert!
I've grown up eating rutabaga every Thanksgiving and Christmas, but always dreaded peeling and cutting them up. When I saw how you peeled them after nuking them for 5 minutes, I was amazed. I'm gonna try that for sure
I knew nothing about rutabagas but bought one in the grocery store to experiment with. Thank you for this video. It helped me have an idea of how to prep and eat it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you🙏 My 1st time cooking Rutabaga and you made it so amazingly easy. Especially with the tip to steam it. I was going to bake it. Wrong! Steaming it reminds me of Rutabaga I had at a buffet restaurant down in Pensacola, FL. Sooooo yummy!!!! Sadly, that restaurant is no more☹️ Thank you again😋
Great video! I love Rutebaga! I grew up in TX, but my New England 1st & 2nd generation family that came here in the 50's had it as a Thanksgiving staple. We boiled and mashed it with butter, simple and so good!. I will try steaming it too. Years ago I heard the Irish (also part of our lineage) mashed it with potato; tried it and really liked it that way too! Thanks for the pealing technique, that will save time and the root waste.
that's my exact memory of "Turnips" at Thanksgiving in NY. An absolute staple. 100% Irish/Great British...Happy Thanksgivings to your clan, if you see this. Grateful for the shared memory xo, S
I just started experiencing rutabagas. My first try was oven fries, and they were so good! I didn't even peel them, I just cut it into a big square. So much waste! I wasn't going to make them anymore then found this video. So very happy! I tried one in the microwave and it's true lol Yay!
You just changed my life!! Been peeling these for years, praying not to cut myself. This is so much easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We add chopped rhutaba to soups and stews. Goes especially well in bean and potato soups. Less of a cabbage taste that way. Plan on trying a recipe we saw for herbed rhutaba fries next.
Actually I work for a grocery store where we actually had rutabaga tops which course I came with the rutabagas the root part and in my opinion they were very good the green part also I would bowl the root and add it to the greens and it was totally awesome but you can probably buy these in a nice Southern store
I boil Rutabagas with carrots, then mash them together with butter. My daughters ask me to make this all the time. It is a delicious and popular side dish in Canada.
My Mum always mashed rudabagas with either potatoes, carrots or white turnips...lots of butter, salt & black pepper! 😋😋 when we had leftovers, she always made patties out of them and fried them Monday evening for supper & we put applesauce on them! 😋😋 she always threw any leftover cabbage in them too! Called Bubble & Squeak!
Scrub anything grown in the ground really well and of course we all know about garbage trucks doubling as food transportation vehicles so....wash EVERYTHING lol.
Ohh myyy hah of corse the skin will peal off easily. If you were in the microwave for 5 min your skin would peal off easier too lol. Use a Potato skinner (w.e you call it)
For a person concerned with knife safety, I find the way that knife is being handled unnerving. Certainly not as expected if taught at a culinary school or in a good restaurant, nor even in my own home.
I was hoping I wasn't the only person who notices that. I'm fine with the peeling part but the holding hand and pointer finger on top of the knife got to me.
CAN NOT SNEAK THIS INTO THE FAMILY'S DIET.....THEY WOULD SMELL IT AS THEY CAME THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR...THEY TASTE GREAT, BUT SMELL AWFUL :-/ I LOVE THEM & AM INTRODUCING THEM TO MY TWO YOUNG GRANDCHILDREN NEXT WEEK !!!
If she is afraid of cutting herself, she should use a potato peeler. Either peelers have not made it to Utah or she is some sort of purist or she really likes to show off her knife skills. Just from that, I do not trust her judgment. At all!!
FWIW, I have tried using a peeler on them with poor results, I couldn't do it. But I have very weak hands. I watched my brother in law prepare rutabagas ones, and he used a large knife to hack off the outer parts. I found her information about which ones to buy will be really helpful. I think I bought the big ones last time because I thought I was getting more rutabaga for the work of peeling. I will buy smaller ones this time and hope for better results.
Sue Meyer I just watched another video where a chef with a sharp peeler and strong hands did it. But the overly repeated the word “patience patience patience “. He also used the word “chipping” rather than “peeling”, which changes my expectation.
@@oldbegonia thanks for the research, I will need to toss my giant root and start again with a smaller one. I don’t want to get frustrated right away. I am not one for patience at all.

I just had one and loved it. I can tell you it is much easier to peel it with a potato peeler.

I am a novice to rutabaga, so THANK YOU for being thoroughly informative!! :)
Thankyou so much your tips worked perfectly I think i will get my son to buy me one every two weeks

My papa used to make it on Thanksgiving. I have had it at every Thanksgiving for 52 yrs now.
I will be checking the stores for prepared Rutabaga in the freezer sections. Cauliflower had it's day now it's going to be the Rutabaga craze :)
Thank you! One of my favorite vegetables. So hard to peel, though, and that's the tips I was looking for! Thanks!

My mother mashed up cooked rutabagas with cooked potatoes and the result was a lovely pale orange color. Delicious.
Thank you, I just used your technique Today, 11/ 13/ 2024 and it definitely worked so Well for me! 😊❤
Thank..just came across your channel looking for directions on how to cook rutbagas..look forward to eating it😄😄
I love both turnip and rutabagas Nvr knew different but is the ones with wax on them easy to peel to.
I love them I use a potato peeler makes it easier 😋
The best way to peel rutabagas is with a potato peeler, really works, and they are very easy to peel with that peeler. I cooked some 2 weeks ago.
Extremely informative,,,thank you very much,,,will try it with bacon and brown sugar...yum!
Thank you so much for the information that you shared with us! 😁
Thank you for your informative video.
I think I will cook it in my small pressure cooker.
Thank you so much for sharing.
We love Rutterbeger.
Did not eat it as a child.
Peeling, when you don’t have to do it so often, it’s a true labor of love.
I boil them with carrots and parsnips = mash them = yummey
Thanks! i never eat them but i will try to find them in Spain. I dont even remember if i ever seen one.

I add rutabaga and turnip to my beef stew. I always get positive feedback when people try it

@@markhealey9409 Sounds so yummy
Wow
Scrub anything grown in the ground really well and of course we all know about garbage trucks doubling as food transportation vehicles so....wash EVERYTHING lol.
Is there some mysterious layer that a regular potato peeler can't handle or something?
We eat these a lot in Nova Scotia. Delicious mashed with sugar.
Very informative - thank you!
Rutabagas and Smoked Turkey Tails are so Tasty when cooked together in the oven.❤
I was told you can microwave it and make it mashed like potatoes and it has less than 1/2 the carbs of potatoes
Doesn't microwaving them KILL the antioxidants and "good" in them?
Welp, the rutabaga I purchased when peeled is White. Edible, but does yellow mean it is more ripe?
After I gave my brand new steamers away I see how to use them, figures.
Yes I like it
If it's waxed, avoid a mess by putting it on parchment paper. The wax some melt into a pool.
We call it turnip. I love it Mmmmm
Turnip is a different plant.
Since it takes longer to cook than potatoes or carrots, I but them in the steamer basket of my rice cooker while cooking rice.
Muy rico
Thank u!
They peel easy if you use a potato peeler before you microwave.
Just use a potato peeler to peel rutabagas
I use a potato peeler and have no problems peeling rutabagas .
Ohh myyy hah of corse the skin will peal off easily. If you were in the microwave for 5 min your skin would peal off easier too lol. Use a Potato skinner (w.e you call it)
Peel no peal. Two different words, two different meanings.
Thank you. I have had to use a MEAT CLEAVER to chop them into pieces before trying to peel them. They are that hard.
Peeling rutabaga is easier with a potato peeler.
Ha! Never had that luck lol
A potato peeler works great!!
Yes, she should fold her fingers in to protect her tips.
So it's a hybrid... 🤔😱😲😒🌱🌳
CAN NOT SNEAK THIS INTO THE FAMILY'S DIET.....THEY WOULD SMELL IT AS THEY CAME THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR...THEY TASTE GREAT,
BUT SMELL AWFUL :-/
I LOVE THEM & AM INTRODUCING THEM TO MY TWO YOUNG GRANDCHILDREN NEXT WEEK !!!
Lol, every year at Thanksgiving my brother comes in the door and asks what smells! He knows... He won't eat it which is ok bcuz it leaves more for us!
Just use a potato peeler. Much easier, then cut up.
You should list the1st thing to do 1st, not at the end.

Peelers don’t work-this veggie is too thick and dense.
