Had one before, an almost completely black mare, save a star. Galloping with her was like sitting on the back of a stream-powered train. Once she had gained momentum, she'd not stop or slow down for anything! She was the kindest, sweetest horse you'd ever meet in the stable and a ferociously competitive spirit when in harness. Couldn't have her in tandem before anything because of it. Alone, no trouble. Once she passed, of old age, I didn't want another horse. Who could fill such a great gap in the heart anyway?
I'd never heard of these guys. But what an all around great breed of horse; so multi-purpose and so quietly behaved. I'm surprised they aren't more known and there aren't more of them around the world, especially in countries with colder climates. Thanks so much for introducing them to us. :)
And in Finland we have the Finnhorse that is also a draft horse, used for the same things in the past and nowadays. There are 4 types: Draft type, trotter type, riding type and the small horse type which is larger pony size. Personally I think the North Swedish horses are more beautiful with their manes and forlocks but Finnhorses are also beautiful. The horse in my profile pic is a Finnhorse gelding around 153cm tall, maybe not that breed typical but still really nice❤ Finnhorses are very often chestnuts in different variations but can also be bay, black , palomino or gray😊 Nowasays a lot of them are bred for trot racing
I grew up with this breed. They have such nice temprament and a very good with kids. At least I've never met a north swedish horse that was mean to people, especially small beings.
I love the video! I'm Swedish, so it's fun to see someone learn about and appreciate our beautiful horses. My grandmother worked with this breed in the 1920s-30s on the family farm in Jämtland. She told me many stories before she passed away, and it's great to hear that some of the traditional work with the "Nordsvensk" is still being practised. ❤ Ps. I just wanted to mention that the English subtitles (and the Swedish) are incorrect. I can timestamp if you would like.
As a very jung child I started to drive the Nordsvensk horse bringing in hay from the fields and taking them out into the pastures for the night. They thought me to love horses. I moved to Spain and started my horsetrekking business and discovered many other breeds. I had Arabians, Spanish and Appaloosa became my favourite of them all.
Swede here! I have never met a Nordsvensk that was mean or naughty. Just the kindest little fellows that want to work with you and can easily stand for hours just being groomed.
Yes they are just the sweetest, at a riding school, when I was a child, they had a gelding, Odin, he was funny, if you went in to him with candy he made sure you came out with nothing lol, he blocked the way until you were clean.
As a swede, there's just something so nostalgic and a glimpse of the past watching a North Swedish horse pull a wagon/sleigh and hearing the horse bell from afar, especially during winter 🥰 And to add to just how old the breed is; it's roots dates back to the swedish bronze age, which is just mindblowing! ☺
When I was 4-5 or so, our neighbourgh had a "Nordsvensk" called Landspojken (~farmboy) I got to "stear" him from the wagon, but he was going home. No stearing needed. He lived to 32 years old. Big boy, brown with black hair. Calm as can be. Loved him. /Catta from Sundsvall
My dad told me that when he was a kid a local farmer in the Swedish archipelago would let the kids ride one of his North Swedes. He put two or three kids bareback on the horse and then off they went to fetch the hay from the field. The horse didn't mind the kids at all, but he loved water, so sometimes when he felt like it he abandoned the road and just walked into the lake beside the road, kids on his back and all. Farmer wasn't happy, kids and horse loved it. 😂
I have been ridden these horses for about 2,5 years now. They are the best breed, can be used in any dicipline and are just the nicest horse in the world!
Aw the good old ”nordsvensk” one of my favorite breed of horse from my country. They are so calm & laidback. I remember riding one of the taller variants in my teenyears when my class had a schooltrip to a resort in the northern part of sweden & 1 of the activities was horseriding & me who only ridden a few times in my childhood & then only on ponies got told to ride this (to me) giant of a horse, but bless that horse for his patience with me since I was not agile enough to get on him on my own, he just stod there waiting while I tried so many ways to climb up in the sadle. I remeber that time fondly, his whole demeanor just told you that he was steady & that you could trust him. Never felt so safe on a horse as I did with that one.
My favorit breed. The personality is absolutly perfect. I take riding lessons on one every week both dressage and jumping. A horse that is always positive.
Watching thesebI can very well imagine on Christmas, after church, the families competing to get home first in their sleds drawn by these horses, and being the origin of the Jingle Bells song.
I love this breed. Beautiful. They could carry me. They remind me of a bigger version of the Exmoor with their lovely coats and colours. They have large wide shiny eyes too.
hi im from sweden and have a north swedish horse, the are so kind. I grew up riding one that horses was the best. Very glad that u gott to try and ride one
When I learnt to ride at age 6, a North Swedish horse named Klok was my favorite. He was always so nice and calm, the kindest horse I ever rode. I picked him on my first day of lessons because he was the biggest of all the school horses.
Swedish here! The north swedish horse is a nice breed. I know a woman that ownes two and she does all kinds of stuff with them. She goes camping with the horses, they help her with dragging lumber, she competes with them in carriagedriving etc. They are nice, calm, big, strong and friendly.
My grandfathers family were poor farmers in the far north of sweden. They used these for hauling lumber on sleds during the winters (and lots of different types of work during the summers) and they were very economical in that they were easy to keep fed even if you didnt have much.
Thank you for introducing us to this wonderful breed! I have a friend here in the US who is from Sweden and grew up with these horses. she ended up getting a Canadian horse because the smaller traditional type of Canadian Horse reminded her so much of the North Swedish Horse in both looks and temperament. Which makes sense, both breeds evolved under similar conditions and use. And both breeds also suffered from crossbreeding with draft and other breeds and an effort was made to establish a studbook (in the case of the Canadian in the 1880s). As with the North Swedish Horse there is a diversity of types in the breed from shorter stockier animals to longer legged "sportier" ones.
Thank you for introducing us to this wonderful breed of horses. I've never heard of this breed before. They are very versatile, and being shorter than most draft horses makes them easier to be handled and harnessed, as well as ridden.
Thank you for this video. Once I had a horse 50% Swedish Draft, 25% Oldenborger and 25% Thoroughbred. What a sweethearth he was. Lots of hair and suitable for everything.
I'm Swedish, and I love this breed. They're just so gentle and easygoing. And they also look like they're straight out of a fairytale. Speaking of Swedish draft horses, there's a Swedish version of the ardenner horse that is basically like it's own breed. They're lovely too. Smaller than the original Belgians, and more agile. Highly recommended if you need a super chill working companion for heavy tasks, as well as an oversized "pony" for your kids to dote on... Also very pretty. (I'm not really a horse person, but I do love draft horses.)
I live in Sweden and my mom used to breed these horses along with shetland ponies. She used to ride a north swede in both dressage, cross country and jumping. Now we mostly have shetlands around but we do still have a lovely mare at home. They're really wonderful horses. Very versatile, calm and collected.
I'm from northern sweden. A cousin of mine have 4 north swedes she's doing different work with as agricuture stuff, during winters she have sled tours, and all-year round trolley tours.
Wow I've been a horse gal my whole life long (I'm 75 now) and these sweet horses make me want horses back in my life sooooo bad!!! I just love them!! ❤️ thank you for these beautiful horses!!!!❤
What a quiet breed with lots of kind eyes like others have written in the comments. Very interesting to learn about thls brewers. I also wasn’t aware they exist. Must be nice horses for children, too! And so versatile. Those manes!
They're amazing horses. They're also surprisingly athletic and agile for being heavy horses. Some riders are even competing them in dressage, medieval tournaments, working equitation, and all kinds of disciplines.
@borjesvensson8661 If you know where they're from originally and where they were (are still) used in forestry, it's not surprising. However, for people who are just used to light horses, it's always surprising whenever they see one of these guys( or a Fjord, Haflinger, lighter Tinker, etc) working under saddle. All breeds that come from areas with a lot of snow are very athletic and agile, too, as well as sure-footed. They also tend to be pretty tough horses with a strong work drive.
@@maggiepie8810 True. If you understand Swedish Yngve ryd's book Timmerhästens Bok is wonderfull. What a beautiful small horse w/full mane & tail!. I love the compact size. These guys are probably the best for bareback; wide seat but nice gaits. Nice soothing music too.

Finally 😍 I have a halv nord schwedisch horse. But he is registered as a Norwegian Døl, since they cross these breeds to avoid inbreeding. I guess you know that. 😉 My boy Gullbrand is 3 years old and right now 15,3 hands+ still growing. I will mostly use him as a riding/dressage horse when he gets older, but we drive both card and sleights with him. So the tractor genes are there. 😂

I'm pretty sure the horses my aunt and her husband had when I was little were this breed. They lived in the west of Sweden near the border with Norway. I remember riding them bareback and then falling off as soon as they went faster than a walk xD
I love how soft you are when riding. I kow it's a big horse, but you move so smoothly, with such soft hands. Any horse would be more than comfotable being riden by you!

@@shawntisdellHi Shawn! Susie from Delta here. I’ve enjoyed watching her channel ever since you and I talked several years ago! She is amazing and I’m so glad you gave me the information on her channel! Blessings to you both!!
I do know Nordsvensk very well. We used to help a girl that had one, when we were teenagers. That mare was called Julia. And she was used mainly as a riding horse. Funny fact... my first Icelandic horse looked like a Nordsvensk, but smaller.
Our beautiful swedish horsie! Love these horses, I hope we never let them get turned into something else and lose this precious breed liek we already almost did. I read somewhere that this horse has a lot of similarities to the very first horse, looks wise at least it still remains similar. And that is also something that needs to be kept.
i have my own north swedisch horse, we live in the netherlands but I always wonderd why she didnt look like the typical north swedisch horse, but this video makes so much sense bc she is from the south of sweden she looks more like a riding horse!! thank you so much I love this breed so much and it makes me happy to see that more people get to know this beautiful breed!!!
This is one of my favourite breeds. I'm Swedish, so I learned about them early on in life and loved them ever since. I've met a few and ridden a few and they are a really nice type of horse, mild mannered but still fun and can be quirky and stubborn if they chose. Would really like to have my own one day!
Your saddle mare has a cross on her face! I should think that when Christianity came to Scandinavia, some found that kind of marking meaningful. What a lovely breed...so gentle and sweet. Thanks for sharing this part of your adventure!
I'm a Swedish non-horse girl. I grew up in the countryside when I was a teenager and took the bus to and from school. And right by the bus stop was a pasture for this big old North Swede namned Hercules. In the spring he would lay in the sun while birds were pecking his winter coat off (for their nests) and he would look dead but was just really enjoying the warm sun. I would sometimes go up to the fence and call him and he would slowly saunter over, lift his head over the fence and put his entire face to me. His head was as big as my upper body. And then I would just stand there and hug him, and pet him, and talk to him - such a wonderful horse. Such a sweet, kind and lovely animal ❤️💕
I love that you found your way to this breed. I have one myself (but the lighter type called Swedish Coldblood Trotter) and they are just the best in every way. You can litterally use them for anything, as shown here. Just the perfect mix in height and overall size for everything from harnesswork and all form of riding. Something not really mentioned here is that "lighter" type that in english is called Swedish Coldblood Trotter. This lighter type of north swedish horse is most know for harness racing but in my opinion is the perfect mix of draught horse and lighter warnbloods. They maintain the height but gets slightly lighter in body but is otherwise very much a north swedish horse. I hope this video will get more people aware of this fantastic breed!
I "met" the North Swedes (Sweeds?) at the first World Equestrian Games in Stockholm. They were well represented during the various exhibitions. Fell in love right on the spot. The horses presented were always well matched so it's fun to see the variation in size and color that exists. Thanks!
Sweed here; North Sweeds are the nicest horses I've met, easy to work with, just easy to deal with in general and very versatile!

@@shawntisdellHi Shawn! Susie from Delta here. I’ve enjoyed watching her channel ever since you and I talked several years ago! She is amazing and I’m so glad you gave me the information on her channel! Blessings to you both!!
A beautiful breed to ride. Very versatile around the farm.
What a lovely video💖 Uffe and Emma are fantastic people who take care of the North Swedish drafthorse❤️❤️❤️ Thanks 🙏🏾
They are beautiful!
The foal is so sweet 🥰
I do know Nordsvensk very well. We used to help a girl that had one, when we were teenagers. That mare was called Julia. And she was used mainly as a riding horse.
Funny fact... my first Icelandic horse looked like a Nordsvensk, but smaller.
I thought that while watching the video...maybe the foundation blood from way, way back.
@@cindyj5522The ancestors of the Icelandic horses were brought from Scandinavia so these guys and the Norwegian counterparts should be their ”cousins”
I met a north Swedish mare many many years ago and she was the sweetest mare I've ever met ❤❤❤❤
Wonderful to see these fabulous breeds. So much more rewarding than the plain vanilla sports horse.
Your saddle mare has a cross on her face! I should think that when Christianity came to Scandinavia, some found that kind of marking meaningful. What a lovely breed...so gentle and sweet. Thanks for sharing this part of your adventure!
Never heard of this breed but I love it. So gentle ❤❤❤❤❤
Aww, what a sweet story! Thanks for sharing!🥰
Never heard of them, but they have the most beautiful eyes!!!❤
I want one, perfect for a 70 year old who needs a quiet one❤
You needed to add this into the fest this year!!!!!
Since i am from Sweden, i do know of this breed
One of the horses reminds me of Przewalski’s horse.
Was thinking the same. Lovely primitive draft.
The Norwegian horse fjord horse is even more like prezwalskis. Those were the horses in the Disney movie Frozen.
Awesome hair! Love this breed!
Thank you so much enjoyed learning about this breed can't wait for next one.
Never heard of this breed, but they are very cute!!!!
Beautiful horses
I "met" the North Swedes (Sweeds?) at the first World Equestrian Games in Stockholm. They were well represented during the various exhibitions. Fell in love right on the spot. The horses presented were always well matched so it's fun to see the variation in size and color that exists. Thanks!
this breed is absolutely gorgeous!
Wonderful as always!
Your videos are so well done! Please continue to give us such great content. What a wonderful quest you're on!
What a sweet temperament. ❤
Yes, I am, because I am Finnish in my hometown, a horse logger who uses the breed in question.
