2007 Mini Cooper H/T Will Not Start When Key Fob is Inserted. SOLVED!

  • My 2007 Mini Cooper would not provide any indications once the Key Fob was inserted, brake pressed and Start/Stop button pushed. I initially thought it was the ignition assembly itself, but that didn't fix it.
At first, the problem was intermittent. I was able to press the top of the Key Fob after it was in the ignition and get it to work sometimes and then it completely stopped working. I changed the Fob battery, charged my car battery, reset everything and no luck.
The three buttons on the Key Fob all worked btw. I had no issues locking/unlocking the car or turning on the radio. I came across a random video about Key Fob circuit board repairs and it led me to resoldering/connecting the coils on this circuit board and boom!
I was literally a day away from paying the dealer hundreds of dollars for a replacement. I hear ACE hardware can duplicate the Mini Key Fob so I will try there this week. If not I will still seek a spare key. Hope this helps!

      I have a self-charging fob...I can't apply this principal.

How did you open it with your fingers? In other videos that I've seen, a knife is used...

I have short nails, dug em in and pulled it apart. My fob was worn and didn't have much holding it together.

It went out again, eventually. I ordered a new key fob from the dealership and haven't had any issues. The cheapest place was the Mini of Peabody dealership on the East coast in MA. They programmed and shipped me a new one to AR. It costs about 250, if I remember correctly. I worked with Brooke...she was really helpful.

thanks for sharing. It did not work for me. car is still dead. Where did you get this info from? are you suppose to add solder to it? Is there a way to measure the coil to see if it has an open? Thanks

This only worked temporarily for me. I was thinking outside the box when I came to this solution. I tried adding solder and even replacing the coil and would get intermittent results. I ended up ordering a new key from a car dealership called Peabody in the Northeastern U.S.. I found that info in another video, but my total came out to around $250. That was the cheapest I could find (I'm in Arkansas).
