  • No one likes to put llama poo in a ziploc bag (not shown in video), but the love for our llamas goes deep. This is not one of the funnest jobs at the ranch, but the reward of happy and healthy llamas is very much worth the while. Follow along today as we dive into the importance of vaccinating your llamas and go into detail about some of the methods we use for parasite control.
Parasite control and vaccinating your llamas is an important duty as a llama rancher and caretaker. We feel there is not an exact science on parasite control and in some situations is very difficult to manage. There is hope, however, with current research data from world leading camelid vets, existing research, common sense, and some consistent effort you can improve the health of your llamas.
The 4 steps we use to treat our llamas for parasites:
1- Get a fecal sample and run it through a sugar float test & centrifuge test or fluke finder (you will need a microscope). It is a good practice to at times run the same fecal sample through all methods available to you to make sure you are not missing anything. This has happened to us and can cause sickly llamas even when you think you have done all you can. The old saying measure twice and cut once is a good rule of thumb here. Once you have identified the parasite and have an idea of the quantity of eggs you have spotted you are ready for step 2. If no eggs are spotted repeat the process to double check maybe use a different method on round 2. (Video coming soon of how to do this).
2- Weigh the animal that needs to be treated so you know how much of a dose each llama should receive.
3- Consult a vet or one of the llama books mentioned below about what to give and how much to administer.
4- After the treatment is complete it is a good idea to do a follow up with a second fecal sample in a few days, weeks or month depending on what you had to treat and the parasite cycle.
When to treat and when to test:
We think it is a good idea to test at all times during the year. With a big herd it can be hard to keep track of, so we test each llama's fecals 4 times a year and then at random when we suspect there might be something going on. We didn't always do this but have learned over time that it is vital to check often and treat your llamas as needed. We hope that as times goes on we can learn more and become better at this.

Come join us on our journey that we call the llama life. Were we worked the better part of a decade to save up enough money that we would quit our jobs and begin living our American dream.
We will take you along on all of the good days and on some of the bad days. We will focus on different aspects of our llama life such as: what it takes to be a llama rancher and outfitter, different backcountry tips and tactics we have learned over the years, how to keep and take proper care of your llamas, the changing environment of working on public land and the preservation of public lands, raising a family in today's society and even some backcountry hunting and fishing. Well maybe a lot of hunting and fishing.

Valbazen is an anthelmintic, not a vaccination. Great video for deworming.

Thanks so much for the very thorough "how to"! I especially appreciate the tips on where to get the supplies and how you're currently using them. Really great. Would love an update on how the treated llamas are doing.

Hey Jason- Thank you for the comment. The llamas we treated for mites are doing very well. We had tried other remedies on them before so to finally find the helping cure was a major relief for us. Additionally the babies weight gain has gone back up and the few 18th old girls had clean fecal samples (for the most part). Everyone seems to be on the mend at the ranch.

Very helpful video. I live in Twin Falls Idaho and just recently purchased my first two llamas. We are very excited to pack with them this year. I'm hoping to get two more to complete my pack string as they are the standard sized llamas. Keep up the great videos they help more than you can imagine.

Hey Chardon- Great to hear you have some llamas. Congrats on your purchase. Llamas have brought a tremendous amount of peace and happiness in our lives. I am sure they will do the same for you and your family. We still have a lot to learn in the years to come. As the journey continues we are happy to share some of the things that have worked well for us. Your message was heart felt. Thank you.

@@wildernessridgetrailllamas6971 Excellent as always Beau. The stuff we used a year and a half ago was Covexin 8, which we gave in 3 daily shots. That was the first time they'd been done since 2009 and it seemed to help. Cecil (15) seems to need a little more than just a grass diet mid-late summer now to stay strong and active, but Rainman (now 19) still seems to do well on our lousy CRP grasses up here. I'm still super appreciative of all the support you gave me during Rainman's abscess problem a couple of winter's back. I thought he was a goner for sure, but ever since he recovered from that surgery he's acted like he was 10 years younger!
