Saw RC 2/17/24 in Charlottesville. I was ready to cut him some slack since he's 70 years old. OMG, was I wrong. His voice still kicks a**, his band was phenomenal and his guitar skills had me mesmerized for two hours.
Thanks Mr. Cray for such great music. You are very unique player. Your lead guitar work is some of the best. Clapton, SRV, Vai, Van Halen should just drool when they watch you play. I have played guitar for years, and I do.
He did not play it at Ravinia on August 27, but again he opened with "I Shiver" and closed with "Time Makes Two". He played a lot of songs from his 2012 "Nothin But Love" album. Great job Robert!
My favourite version of this is on a live (audio) recording made in Austin in 1987...there's nothing wrong with this one but the 1987 track is faster with a lot more energy. Saw him and his band in Edinburgh this year, a simply amazing night he was full of banter and the whole band played flawlessly and looked like they were enjoying themselves. Gig of the year for me.
Saw him this evening in Arlington Heights. He played great. The first encore was "Phone Booth"! He joked that he should write a song about a fax machine :) I'm "just outside Chicago..."
Cray played better guitar solos on other versions this song. For example, the one in Montreaux Festival 1986. Maybe the lack of his old Super Reverb... But Richard Cousins is in a great moment in the bass, and all the band rocks!
Always gotta laugh at dislikes on pro artists music. Why search for it and listen in the first place. Jeez. I suppose 1 numpty with deaf ears is allowed.
I wish Cray would go back to using Fender Amps. The tone he's getting from those Matchless amps sound kinda flat and stale compared to say...a coupla 60's Super Reverbs. He has a simple style that I love....so tone is everything. Especially in the Blues.
Try being the best bass player in your band when you have no lead guitarist... I gotta listen to the bass suck whilst preparing for my upcoming sucky lead 😂

This is THRILLING, few words but full feeling in that guitar, just love it.

Outstanding player and singer!
That vibrato is from another planet!

Thanks for posting this--my favorite Robert Cray song. I hope he plays it in St. Charles next Friday.
Amazing, seeing them again this week
Did they ever play the song "Save It" live, I love it as much as phone booth! This live version is one of the mint ones

And the end of the track was different

Amazing!
The accented rhythm thing at 2:31 . . . that's so cool.
Yes, he played it. "I'm new in St. Charles..."!
Yes, played Phone Booth in Arlington Heights!
Ah, an SVT......sweetest sounding bass amp ever. I have one made in 1971.
Matchless for Robert on 🎸
Phone Booth… making a call… a distant past… say, “CALL BIG RITA” 🎸
Me Encanta esto !! I love &Y😎🌵
Si te gustó esta versión escuchá la de Montreaux. Creo que es bastante superior.

I agree with you. This is not the trademark Cray's sound. Still Cousins bass is superb here.
Didn't he use Matchless in 90,s...? I may be wrong...
Yes the tone is not much to be desired here
i traded mine for marshall guitar amps,i gave up on the bass and figured i would just suck at one thing

I agree. Although, Cousins moves that bass and the band sounds fantastic!
