Your climate bounced from snowing, all the way to our southern heat in no time at all! I've never grown turnips before! I need to give them a try in the fall! Great video Valerie!
It's been so unseasonably hot. Fortunately, we're supposed to get rain this week and drop 20 degrees lol And yes, you need to grow turnips at least for the greens. You can't be in GA and not eat okra or turnip greens 😉😂
@@DiggingForHealth haha grits definitely count. That made my mouth water! 🤣We had homemade ice cream when I was in Texas. My dad brought his ice cream cooker all the way from Bama for it! ! I don't know if that's southern or not, but it was definitely a throwback to my childhood.
@@NowGardening That sounds sooo delicious! I love homemade ice cream and I haven't had any in years and years! 🍨🍦🍧 My Dad made a hand crank ice cream maker when we were kids. We had to work hard for that treat! 🤣
🌼🌻🐝☀️🌺👨🌾🌸🌺 You are an inspiration to me. Im growing most of my garden in containers. I can see you put a lot of work and love into growing! The best part of gardening to me is you get to see the new growth everyday it brings me so much joy! It’s the start of my 3 year gardening but there is still so much to learn and I appreciate your tips, tricks and advice! I look forward to learning more from each other as we grow!
Thank you for your sweet message! I’m happy to find we have a lot in common 😍 It’s wonderful that you’re learning to garden, and don’t worry because we ALL are learning new things as we go. I just got a great garlic tip from a follower on IG today, for example! 💚 Enjoy the rest of your Sunday! Valerie
Such a nice video. I am glad i found this channel atleast now. I thought i have already seen too many turnip growing videos but some how never got this video in search results till now. Hope this channel gets alot more attention and reaches more people.👍
Hi Maria! I’m getting so many messages from other viewers saying the same! I didn’t realize they were so uncommon. You should give them a try in the early fall. They store for a long time, which makes them a great food for people who want to be self-sufficient in winter 👍🏻
Hi Valerie, really enjoyed your video about growing Turnips in containers. We are growing many more crops in containers this year finding it a versatile way of growing and avoiding some pests.. Best Wishes, Paul & Nadj.
Hi Paul & Nadj. I saw your bucket carrot video, which gave me the inspiration to try that too. Thanks to you, I have a few carrot tops that seem to be growing happily in their small container.
I’ve never grown turnips but I’d love to try them in my garden next season. Thanks for the useful tips on to grow them and when it’s best to harvest them👍🏾 Beautiful rose you’ve got in your background, so lush with lots of blooms🌹thanks for sharing ☀️🤗
I’ll be growing them again in the fall too. They’re a great storage food for winter, although I’m not much of a prepper myself. As for the roses, unlike the turnips they don’t seem the least bothered by our heat! 🌷
@@NowGardening it seems like it would beat the hell outta tryin to grow them amongst my Bermuda grass though. At least until there's better soil space. 🤷🏽♂️ Maybe the same practice could apply to shallow Rubbermaid containers?
@@theworkingmansgarden7638 You've got a good point there! It might work depending on how shallow the rubbermaid containers are. A turnip's taproot goes a few inches down, but I think you'd be ok around 10-12 inches deep.
Oh I'd never though a video about turnips could be so lovely! This was very informative and helpful as a beginner gardener. I have turnip seeds but I live in Norway and the climate here is still so cold I haven't even planted them yet. But at least I now know how to proceed when they look somewhat like yours. I had to laugh when you said the bad simile (probably not the right word, I'm sorry), it was bad but it was great too haha I thoroughly enjoyed this video! New friend and supporter here! I'll definitely visit here as I get further along in my garden.
Oh thank you so much. I’m touched by your kind words. Norway, wow! I haven’t been there yet but it’s on my list. Good luck growing your first turnip crop. As soon as it’s above 0° at night, you can get them planted. Have a lovely week!
I throw the seeds in good soil, water real good (flood them daily) and they grow like crazy,Good eating, love the greens also, turnips are one of the easiest fastest veg to do 👍
Your turnips are looking good and sounds very crisp. I tried growing turnips once. I planted them under a guava tree. That was a mistake. Every time the wind would blow ripe fruit would fall off and land on the small seedlings. I made guava jam but no turnips. I am feeling very inspired to try them in one of the grow bags this fall. Thank you for sharing.
At least you got some good guava jam! When I was growing up in Alabama, we always had loads of turnips growing for turnip greens. They seemed to grow without the least effort on anyone’s part. I have certainly not found it that easy to grow them here in France. Here it’s the slugs that get them.
Interesting Val, we've had cold conditions but noticed ours pushed up out of the ground. We think they may have got a little dry !! Turnips look great and breaking a rule is a bonus lol Have a great Sunday!! Cheers J&C 🌱🌱🌱
Hi J&C. You're exactly right. The pushing up can be a general sign of stress for turnips, not only heat. If I'm remembering right, I had it happen once when I planted in overused soil. Turnips are surprisingly temperamental now that I'm thinking about it lol
Hi Cara. We usually use our turnips in a Moroccan couscous, but this time I just sliced them up with the greens and let them boil until tender. How do you cook yours?
@@NowGardening That sounds so good. I honestly haven’t found a way to prepare them that I am in love with yet unfortunately. Still experimenting on that one 😊
Cool to see a video on turnips! I feel like it’s an overlooked crop by many. Pretty cool that you were able to transplant them. I’ve never seen this done! I’m looking forward to trying to grow turnips in the fall. Do you eat them with your salads? I love radishes with my salads. Great harvest! Never seen them grown in buckets. Very nice👍🏻
Thanks so much. It was a fun experiment, and I'll grow them again in the fall. Above all I love turnip greens, and all you have to do is boil them with salt & pepper and they are delicious. As for the turnips, I either slice them in with the greens or cook them with Moroccan tajines, but they go great with beef stews/roasts. Look forward to seeing yours in the fall--seems like everything you plant thrives!!
Nothing may stay the same but I guess one good thing that should remain is the heart that always remembers to: Just stay being the best of your heart could... But when that heart feels like giving up, give it a rest, pause for a while but never ever give up. 👏👍💪
Never planted turnips before. Never had them raw before & never eaten the greens before either. What do the greens taste like? btw...I like your hair like that..
Thanks, Monique 💚 I can’t imagine having never eaten them, but it makes sense since they are cool-temperature veggies and would certainly not grow in Jamaica. I can’t think of anything like the greens in taste. Basically, you boil them and they have a slightly rough texture and I’d describe them as a little peppery. Turnips themselves taste somewhat like radishes if you’ve had those.
I’ve never grown them so it looks like mine will grow in buckets, under a grow light, in my Arizona room. My temps this week are around 113 degrees. Thanks for posting, now I know what I have to do.
Thanks for watching and good luck with your bucket turnips. Two of my daughters live in Phoenix. Arizona heat is tough for cool weather plants, and winter would be your season to grow them if you put them outside at all.
@@NowGardening I’m down in Tucson. Phx is even hotter. I love it, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I only clean eat (healthy keto) so I found a new recipe, I may just have to grow them year round. Thanks again!

Excellent video, Valerie! I'd never considered growing turnips in buckets, but I may try this fall! Thank you for the info and idea!!
Overall, I’d say they’re not super practical except for keeping the bugs off. If you want to grow a large crop, it would take a ton of buckets lol
