  • We made a magic pillowcase video years ago that showed how to make these simple, fun, and practical gifts. Over the years, you've had questions about using directional fabrics, and making the pillowcase different sizes.
    Jen's here to answer some of those questions and give you an updated look at the magic pillowcase tutorial. We used directional fabrics and explain how to cut the fabric, and provide helpful tips along the way.
    If you make a magic pillowcase, let us know in the comments, and share photos with us on Facebook!

    Jen, please make your viewers aware that if you are making a matching pair of pillowcases you must place one cuff on the left side of fabric and the second pillowcase place the cuff on the right side of fabric. If not one of the pillowcases will be upside down when you place it on the bed. I got that tip from another vloger Jean Truelove.

      TY for this...I'm a beginner and I would have been confused with the outcome of my pillowcases if I had not known about this.

      That is a very useful tip. I’ve made quite a few of these where the pattern didn’t matter but I would have been in trouble had it not been. TFS.

    • @noelquentin57
      @noelquentin57 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, and sometimes it matters whether the pullow case will be placed on the left or right side of the bed. So for a two-pillow-wide bed, make sure the cuff will hang to the outside of the bed. Ask me how I discovered this!😂

    Thanks Jen for the updated “Magic Pillow Instructions”. Few suggestions: use magic sizing on the fabric before cutting and you will find that not only are your cuts more accurate, but the rest of the assembly will be easier; also after stitching the first 1/4” seam and before you turn give a press to those stitches to set the seam, for this will also aid in getting the balance of the french seam construction completed; and finally take the Clover tool and run it down the side and bottom seam for this too will help in getting that final step in the french seam construction.

    Fantastic video and clear instructions! Made this pillowcase today with my 8yo granddaughter. She could easily understand your instructions and follow your video. This was a first-time ever sewing project for her and first time for a pillowcase for both of us! We had picked out directional fabric (unicorns), but we had the material cut to the instructions of a different video. No worries. It still came out looking great and she was super happy (so was I)! I think I know what the grandkids (x6) will be getting for Christmas! So many cute fabrics to choose from! Will post the picture on your Instagram page!

    Love this project… I was working on a project that had long pieces, so I purchased a couple of long metal rulers from Lowe’s…. an eight and four foot. When I used the eight foot, I used clamps to secure my place on the table and it also gave me a nice, sturdy edge for my rotary cutter to glide up against. They work great!

    Thank you so much for this pattern and instructions. I am new to sewing and I am so excited to be able to make something homemade for my adult children that they will actually use. When I was buying my fabrics everyone at the fabric store kept telling me that my fabric was directional so be careful. I didn't fully understand what they meant. One shopper told me about your website and told me to watch his video first before cutting. THANK YOU!! Without these instructions, I would have most likely messed up the cutting and would have been so disappointed as the fabric I am using is no longer available. I hope to make a quilt for next year. Can't wait to start trying some of the other projects on your site. Thanks again!!!!

    I reviewed this video and comments before cutting my directional fabric. Great instructions!
    Another component that would be very helpful, as one commenter mentioned, is how to determine the pattern layout/direction if you want to end up with the cuff on the right or left side. Some of us need the visual rather than written instructions. Thanks so much for the video tutorial!

      Have you ever found instructions to deal with pattern layout/direction with a directional fabric and making one cuff on the right and one on the left so it looks right on the bed?

    Hi Jen, my name is Bobbi. I am making pillow cases for for Quilts of Valor to give to Veteran Families; and also pillow cases for shelters. I've watched a number of magic pillow case videos and I must say, I've enjoyed yours the best. I am a relatively new sewer, and need as much detail as possible to understand everything. Thank you so much for making these videos in such detail. I absolutely appreciate them. I've also been watching your videos on Cricut. Again, Thank you so much. I've made your Magic Pillowcase several times in the past. They make great gifts but confess that I make them for myself more than for others. Thank you for your very clear and precise instructions. However, today is not my day. And these are my mistakes...nothing at all to do with you. First I layered the fabrics in the wrong order...had to rip it out and start over. Then, I sewed the cuff and the body in two different directions...I'm using one way prints...had to rip it out again! I am confident that third time's the charm! Thanks again :-)

    You mentioned the link to the free pattern download. When I clicked on the link and went to your site the pattern still said it was free and pointed to another link. That takes you to a professionally printed pattern that you need to buy instead of one to download. Absolutely love the video though. You do need to change alternate where you place the cuff if your making matching pillowcases, one on the left and the other on the right side.

    I have been sewing these pillowcases for quite a few years. Since they have been used and washed numerous times I noticed early on that the accent strip would wrinkle. If you sew it down before you do the French Seam, it doesn't get all caddy-wampus on you when you take it out of the dryer. (I don't iron pillowcases anymore.) Love watching your videos. They are very helpfull.

      I love using fancy decorative stitching as accent on the trim piece. I also adjust its width to complement the chosen fabric. Sometimes a little accent is all that is needed, not the full inch or wider trim piece. This style is so easy to customize.

    I like to line up all the selvages of the fabric pieces on the right and sew them together, then trim off the selvages on both sides before stiching the pillow seams. Then you can be sure that you haven't cut one piece too long or too short.

    Thank you for the video, I was given some kids directional fabric so this helps a lot. One question that you didn't mention in the video and just wanted to confirm - if you want the cuff to lay on the right, you would put the main fabric with the top to the left when pinning, but if you want the cuff on the right, you would lay it with the top on the right, correct?

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that seems to be the correct answer. For a cuff on the opposite side, you would turn your fabric 180 degrees and put the cuff on that side. You can check the accuracy of this by only sewing approximately 4 inches in and peeking inside the rolled tube you've created to see if this is working. Thanks for watching! ✨ -Michelle

    Turn the directional fabric and would make really cute pillow case dress.

  • @linjber
    @linjber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Why not just fold the fabric in half when cutting the 27” width? Then you’d be cutting 22” and you’d see what you’re doing. Not all fabrics line up. Some patterns run on the diagonal, so you might not be able to line up the “top of the hammock.” Also, won’t the pattern be upside down on the back side of the pillowcase? I’ve done directional ones by cutting the 27” x 45” fabric into 2 pieces that are 27” x 22.5”, then rotate one and sew them back together before continuing. Then both sides of the pillowcase are correct and it can be used with the opening going toward the left or right.

    • @linvallier2269
      @linvallier2269 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @linjber, I was thinking the same thing, cut that body in half, allowing for a seam allowance, then it stays right side up.
