"Camouflage", is one of a series of animated movies made by the Walt Disney Co. in support of the U.S. war effort. Between 1942 and 1945, during World War II, Walt Disney was involved in the production of many propaganda films for the US government, some featuring well-known Disney characters including Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. The widespread familiarity of Walt Disney's productions benefited the US government in producing support for the war. In "Camouflage", the purpose is a bit different -- it's an attempt to educate members of the U.S. Army Air Forces about this vital skill. In it, Hoodie the Chameleon explains the importance of camouflage and decoys for equiment and ground installations against aerial attacks.

The soldiers probably didn’t even care it was a cartoon they were probably just super excited to get to see a film IN COLOR like imagine that you come from an old farm town with the most basic of amenities and now you’re watching a color film about to fly a war plane one of the most technologically advanced weapons of its time
I can see why these cartoons were very effective for the military, everything is much clearer to understand when put into a memorable skit, this would probably look like gibberish if the only reference was bulleted instructions in a handbook.
I learned a few things myself, such as the glass reflection part. Stuff I never thought about.
That was a lesson learned in WW1 the hard way. British infantry went into the trenches with a lot of 'spit and bull' - and brightly polished buttons on their tunics and breast pockets. Didn't take the Germans long to spot that + marks the spot to aim for, especially at night when flares were used. Took the British 'brass hats' (senior officers) longer to learn that cloth-covered buttons reduced that casualty rate.

I could not help but notice the name of the chameleon was "Yehudi". That name was used by the US Navy in WWII on "Project Yehudi" in which lights were placed on wings and other parts of anti-submarine aircraft. They varied the brightness of the lights to approximate the sky conditions, so that U-boats on the surface (where they spent most of their time, in that era) could not discern the shapes of oncoming aircraft. Done properly, the planes could not be seen. The project was shelved when the Germans started using air search radars on their boats.
I wondered where the name came from. 😎

A _very_ popular phrase among 'hep cats' of the 1930s and 40s was _"Who's Yehoodi."_ It originated with a 'bit' on the Bob Hope radio show wherein Jerry Collona repeatedly goofed on the name of a concert violinist named Yehudi Menuhin. The catch phrase _"Who's Yehoodi"_ spread like wildfire and became the name of a very popular Cab Calloway song.
'Yehoodi", per the song, was "the little man that wasn't there", a mysterious character that no one knew anything about.

Tens of thousands of soldiers can shoot. In fact they're amazing at it. BUT 80-90% who make it into Sniper Training FAIL at concealment. That's right, MOST super shooters just can't hide well enough to do the job and live to tell about it.
But the Finnish sniper from the Winter War against Russia had camouflage perfected even in the snow. Over 500 confirmed kills. He got the point. 🇫🇮

Wait. Are you saying 80-90% of those in sniper training fail out b/c of their concealment skills (or lack thereof)?
B/c if that's the case, I'd say the failure lies more in the training itself rather than the trainee. Or in the selection criteria. Which is the complete opposite of pilot training where much R&D has been used to ensure that they select candidates that have more than a fighting chance of actually getting their wings.
But I suppose it's nowhere near as expensive to lose a sniper candidate halfway through training than it is to lose a pilot candidate.
But still, seems like unnecessarily high drop rate in this day & age.

My uncle was a navigator on a light bomber; a 2Lt in the Army Air Core. His plane disappeared in 1944 over the Coral Sea. He must have watched this same film.

They were still using this movie in the 70's to teach the principles of camouflage.
It's a good "one - pager" for camouflage. Not for current international relations, now. It had its purpose in WWII.

Ft. Leonard Wood the US ARMY Engineer Corp's & Military Police training center think they also do Chemical Corp's now. They had a awesome library/ museum, sound proff pods with nearly every instrument the library also has every training film made from 1930's and up. Every training manual and vehicle repair manual known. Awesome place in 1979...

It's true about being able to see where someone has walked . Specially early in the morning when there is dew in the ground . Someone walking across a field of grass , it looks like snail tracks and can be seen easily from 4000 feet , or more .

The military more or less had complete control over the animation studios during the war with many famous animators working with them. One of them was Doctor Seuss, who served in the Army with an animation unit where he created training films including Private Snafu.

Somebody should restore the color of this to the look of true 1940s Technicolor. I suppose the master negative may no longer exist, but the digital technology to restore it should. Colorization has come a long, long way since "Ted Turner's crayons" were first used, so surely someone could restore this to what it would have been at an original screening. I wish I knew how to do it. There is great historical value to old films like this.
This print was probably produced in Eastmancolor from a Technicolor negative. If it was a true Technicolor print, it might show its age in scratches, dirt and overall picture quality, but the color should be very bright. This should look as colorful as a typical Loony Tunes cinema short.
audio could "easily" be cleaned up also.

We were taught the 5 S's and the M method in the SADF.
Shape, Shadow, Sound, Shine, Smell and Movement... but we added Silhouette and confused our Corporal Instructor immensely.
Until the Major came along to listen, and added Spacing to the list.
We were Armoured Corps, not Infantry, who only seemed to be taught of the 5 S's!

If you go in the south side of Bramshill Plantation in England you can still see the hard standings under the trees which were built to hide the vehicles waiting to go down to the coast for D day.

To think, my grandfather more than likely had to watch this short as part of his training in the U.S Army Air Force Signal Corps. It's thanks to guys like him working far behind that the bomber crews had as accurate info as they could have gotten so they could place their payloads on target.

The First Motion Picture Unit was headed by Captain Ronald Reagan who, in 1943, sent a photographer to fellow actor Reginald Denny's Radioplane, a manufacturing plant at Van Nuys' Metropolitan Airport, where target drone aircraft were built.
The photog focused on a young assembler, Norma Jeane Dougherty, launching the career of the lass later known to the world as Marilyn Monroe.

The high ups refused to accept camo until the 90's, only a few commando units in the pacific then in the 70's ever used it....ironically you can see US airodromes in Iraq on google earth.
As long as you have got air superiority, you can neglect camouflage.
And since WW2 the US always had absolute Air superiority especially in the late 20th century.

Things will be different in the future.
One thing that was lacking from the Disney war effort: Mickey Mouse. This was a stark difference from Bugs Bunny and Warner Bros. Carl Banks was not so independent-minded when he was making the Donald Gets Drafted series too, though I will not deny Donald was quite a fighter for the war effort in other cartoons. The whole studio should've colonized and not just occupied by the U.S. Army during World War II.

It's really nice that they provide this remastered history for free for us.
But their main income is selling copies of them, and so they put the watermark on to make sure they aren't pirated.
If people could just download them, they would lose the income that they use to make these available in the first place.

At least this one doesn't have the huge timecode a lot of their other films do. I can live with the watermark.

Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous TH-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.

The Japanese military was rlly good at hiding their planes as well as making fake ones to confuse the enemy. American shoulders once found a decoy plane they had carved out of volcanic rock. There’s a photo of it out there.

Project yoohooti was a program that successfully cloaked airplanes in flight.
The problem was aircraft were being used to hunt nazi U boats but the u boats could see the approaching aircraft a long way off and dive to safely.
To combat this, lights were put into the leading edges of the airplane and lit up to match the Intensity of the sky. This broke up the shape of the aircraft and made them harder to see. Now the aircraft could get close enough to bomb u boats on the surface before they submerge.
It is rumored that this project was what inspired the Romulan cloaking device in Star Trek.
