Dude, I am going back to school later in life (I am 46) and I am a mom to 4 (two of which still live at home), work full time, and have to maintain my house on top of it all. I would be LOST without my Cousin. I have to agree with you 100% on the bullet journal vs. dated planner. I used the bullet journal for over 5 years, and even doing a Ryder Carroll style monthly log, generated too much pressure to have to set things up. Having all of my calendars ready to go is amazing. That being said, I did end up taking on a wee A6 bullet journal to carry with me back and forth to work because I am terrified of losing my Cousin. It truly is an extension of my mom-student-homeowner-employee-LIFE brain!
first of all CONGRATS on going back to school, I had so many people in my program who were just like you, taking care of kids and getting their degree and really amazingly doing it all. The Cousin is such a good book for that as well. I'm so glad your system works for you and I wish you so well in your program!
So right about getting a dated planner, once life gets busy, it's hard to sit down and do it manually. The most important thing is getting things done ✅✅✅
Looking back, I have no idea how I survived college without a planner. I can barely get through the day without one now. I graduated in 2003 and I honestly cannot remember how I even kept track of what time I had class. I remember almost nothing outside of what gel pens I was using. I just caved and bought a Cousin to see if I want it for work & more detailed housekeeping stuff, and to see if my kids are interested in using one.
I totally know what you mean Sarah. I planned through college but high school is an actual mystery to me especially since I am SO forgetful if I dont write it down. The cousin is a good one - I hope you enjoy!
I used a planner (like a suuuuper basic one I bought in grocery store...) in my last year and it started my love for planning. Before that... I genuinely don't know how I managed uni... Wish bullet journaling was a thing back then, but oh well... hope the new generation is making better use of that
As a college student, I use the Hobonichi cousin, and it DEFINITELY is there to keep my sanity. The hefty weight of my cousin is all my stress that I dump on it daily.
Loved seeing your planners! We share the same opinion on a lot of things. In the end though, I went back to the Hobonichi weeks... but I use 3 of them LOL Thank you for sharing ❤
Congrats on finishing your degree! I wish there had been planners like Hobonichi when I was in school back in the late 90s, at least I have no memory of using anything like that. Born too soon (sigh). Btw, I loved this video--very focused & functional, very helpful.
Honestly super enjoyed seeing the messy bullet journals because they were very real, very packed with information, and served their purpose. I wish you would make a video of each one talking more about your process at the time
Love this video! I'm currently in my 2nd year of Grad school and I had the same feeling about needing a dated planner lol. I loved making spreads in a bujo but I just did not have the time or mental bandwidth once I started my PhD. I am currently using the Hobo A6 with the Weeks for all academic stuff and love the weeks for tracking how I use up my time.
YES ugh the dated vs drawing your own spreads thing. I would love the opportunity to be creative... if I had the time haha! It sounds like you have such a good system going!
lol the Moleskine was my fav. I've used it in undergrad, but now moved to a hobonichi weeks. I'm thinking about going back to a moleskine because it's a little bigger.
I have 6 more classes to finish my MBA. I’m floating back and forth between a Cousin, and a B6 Stalogy. The Stalogy always pulls me back with its blank page. I use a monthly supplement with the Stalogy so I don’t have to draw out the months.
I used some pretty basic mead planners when I was in college (I’m old!). When I was in grad school I think I used Erin condren, plum paper, and passion planner. Since then in my postdoc and as faculty and staff I’ve used mainly hobonichi cousin and passion planner(which is my favorite!).
I‘ve always been using a HoboWeeks style layout in my planners throughout university: Page on the left for appointments; page on the right for the tasks I wanted to do during the week. I was always disappointed I couldn‘t find a planner with lots of gridded back pages. If only I had known about the HoboWeeks then! It would have been THE perfect planner for me! With a MegaWeeks, I could even have taken notes of the individual lectures/presentations of research papers I heard towards the end of my studies. Now, for work, Hobonichi Cousin-style weeklies work best for me, but I don‘t like the dated back pages of the Cousin. Sooo glad I‘ll be able to use the Sterling Ink Common Planner next year! 💙
Bujo got me through. I only had 2 spreads: vertical monthly to track my health and horizontal weekly (because I need to have a reason why I do stuff). First 2 years where I have classes and teaching, I split the weekly into personal, research, teaching, and classes. Have some brain dump after each month if needed. No daily log at all. For whatever reason I managed to decorate it but now I am full time research, my bujo still only has 2 spreads and no decor. 😅
I was about to get weeks for next year. If only they make it biggerrrrr 😅 i totally understood your emphasis on predated planner. This would be my first time in 5 years that I buy a predated planner.
i love ur planners!! also did u go to usc annenberg for undergrad? I saw a sticky note in there... I'm doing undergrad here as a comm major :) so just got excited

DEF agree!
0:18 planners that got me through university-a very small planner, as hobo weeks, but in the landscape mode. I still have it
that's awesome - i love the small planners for prioritizing!

Soooo crucial to have somewhere to dump that stress when you’re in school!!
super in love with your black bujo, i personally love messy bujo ♥️♥️

I'm so honored thank you!! I love the weeks and will be using two in the new year as well 😂 vids on that coming soon. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much! That's such a nice compliment. Planner and stationery world has DEFINITELY evolved - in a good way!

I just posted a flip through and a Q2 set up video that talks a lot about my process! I know how valuable that stuff can be. Thank you for commenting!
This was perfect, thank you

Such a great video.
hey! thank you for this amazing video! i was wondering what hobanichi journal i would get for the 2023 start fall semester? thank you
Thanks for the video!
So glad you liked!

Ugh yeah drawing out the months is my least favorite. I know from experience that sometimes you just need both to switch between indefinitely 🫠

So good to know that the Hobonichi and Passion planners can hold up to postdoc and faculty work!!
I used a BuJo and now I'm using the hobonich cousin

I am SO excited for the common planner!! I think it will be great for what you are talking about

I'd like to see the flip though of your black bujo!!! It's so real!
Haha maybe someday! It certainly is real lol
