    Magnificent video, Lindy. Thank you for these thoughtful reviews. "There were no people there." Well, that just about says it all, doesn't it? When you repeated that line, I gasped. Very powerful video, Lindy. Thank you.

    What a wonderful batch of books this week! I want to read Aednan, The Sea in You, Diaries of War and Followed by the Lark. Aednan was the only one I had heard of.

    Such a great selection of books. Aednan is a must read for me and, I find the Sami joiking/yoiking speaks to my soul. It is almost like nature's voice. I also put the book about Thoreau on hold. Thank you so much Lindy!💕

      Barbara, I was thinking of you when I included a link to the yoik video; I was sure you would enjoy it. Aednan is an impressive feat and it asks a lot of the reader too. No spoon feeding.
      Follow the Lark, on the other hand, is pure pleasure. A celebration of nature.

    Wonderful video. I love that you film outside on your porch, with your cat and the neighbor and occasional car and birdsong. Lovely. …Aednan & Stolen & White Rapids sound amazing. And Diaries of War made me tear up, that little snippet you read about the confusion of their thoughts, the struggle of weighing emigrating and what to do about their dog. So heartbreaking. …Loved the photos at the end while you read to us. It snowed overnight here, so it was fun to hear about the cold winter that I still see outside my window, juxtaposed with your beautiful photos of spring emerging. Your videos are every bit as good as curling up with a good book. Blessings. 😊
    PS. Oh, I must be the odd one…I didn’t mind the narrator’s voice, caught small inflections so she sounded human to me. But I’m used to being odd. 😂

    I always get a new book to add to my list when watching your videos:) I picked up the book, The Future, at my library on a whim a month ago. It interested me as I am from the Detroit area and also like speculative fiction. It is short and it wasn't bad, but I didn't get far before dnf'ing it for another book I had planned to read. It just didn't grab my interest. After hearing your experience and knowing it did win awards, maybe I will try it again and keep with it:) I agree on the audio version..arrg :/

      Thanks for weighing in on the audio narrator’s voice. Interesting that you weren’t hooked by the early part of The Future either. I’m curious to see how it will do in the Canada Reads debate. Its champion, Heather O’Neill, is smart and persuasive. She may convince me to see more merit in the novel. So much of our experience with a book has to do with mood, don’t you think?

    I'm intrigued by Ædnan. It doesn't seem to have been translated into Norwegian, but several libraries have got the Swedish edition, so I might order that one to my local library.
    I'm just about to start the sequel to Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius. It's just been published in Norwegian. I'm really looking forward to reading it.

    I read Ædnan in January and will be reading Stolen this month, I really liked Ædnan but I think I read them in the wrong order as it sounds like you were able to make a lot of connections. I bought Ædnan when I was visiting a friend and left the book with her to read so it won't be a super easy one to pick up and reread! I read The Future last week as well. I started the audio since that is what I could get on Hoopla and when I was about halfway through the ebook from the library came through and it was better when I was doing the ebook and audio together as I could appreciate her writing more. I didn't love the audiobook either but wanted to read the book for Canada Reads, for me it was 3.5 stars. I didn't care for the sections that focussed on the dog, even though they were short. I'm also hoping that Denison Avenue wins Canada Reads. This past week I read Last Woman by Carleigh Baker, it comes out on March 5th but Coles in Whitehorse was okay to put it out before then so I picked it up on Monday and absolutely loved it. I am hoping it will be on the Carol Shields prize longest so more people will hear about it! The first story is set in the Yukon. And also last week I read Desert Queen (3 times!) on your recommendation and it is so beautiful, thank you!!

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aednan is a book that makes its reader work; lots of things to look up if you aren’t familiar with the Sami language & culture as well as Swedish history. I think having read it will deepen your experience with Stolen. I’m going to be listening to The End of Drum Time next, so I will be adding layers to my knowledge of that part of the world.
      I’m glad to hear about Carleigh Baker’s latest. Thanks! It’s been 6 years since I read Bad Beginnings.
      Desert Queen really is a treat. I’m currently reading A Suitable Boy and when a character attempts the steps of a kathak dance, I immediately imagined the illustrations from that picture book.

      Oh, and high five on Denison Avenue! The photos of the five defenders that CBC has posted on their website make it clear that the debates are more about personalities than the books. I hope I’m wrong about that aspect.

    I totally agree with you. Karie Richards reading is tough to take. The Future was a bit of a mixed bag for me as well. I completely did not get the purpose of the alternative history aspect of the book.

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe the alternate history aspect is to emphasize that it isn’t the crumbling Detroit of today? And the Detroit/Fort Détroit setting is used to offer the possibility of new kinds of social structure that can arise from neglect and that will provide a better future for humanity.

    • @sarah-roadworthy
      @sarah-roadworthy 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lindysmagpiereads I'm guessing that aspect didn't really work for you either?!

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sarah-roadworthy I liked the setting, including the alternate history aspect. What I found slow in the first part was feeling connected to the premise: the grandmother trying to find out what happened to her daughter and granddaughters, and the very slow progress she made in bonding with the community. When the story shifted to the children, I was much more engaged. And Gloria by then was more established too.

    • @lindysmagpiereads

      @sarah-roadworthy I guess I am not much interested in solving how a death occurred; the father killed by the bus and then the revenge - that didn’t work for me either. I came away from the novel with appreciation but not love.

      There’s a wispy quality to Ædnan, something that’s a bit tricky to grasp, so it’s good to have it in print format to make it easy to reread passages or to linger and think. Now that I’ve read it through once, however, I think I will enjoy it in audio. But not if it was that narrator that I sampled in this video!
