      Cathy Cat ☆ カティー CanuDoitCat I live in japan. I need you to be made aware of something right now. Japan has the largest, and one of the most dangerous stalking problems. If you are still being stalked have a male friend, or a large group of friends to help protect you. The police here don't do much of anything to help us when it comes to this problem. You are so sweet, and i honestly can't stand to see this go south for you, like it did to one of my classmates 7 years ago. Please, stay safe even if you're at home have maybe some male friends or more than one friend over the house to help you.

      nezkeys79 they asume that because it happens all the time... The fact that you have not seen it does not mean it does not happens, Its better to prevent than to be sorry. So to me its better to make a big deal out of it than to ignore it ang give them a chance to harm you.

      Wow chill out guys
      First I wasn't wearing lolita, I was just a foreigner girl that was so excited to be in Japan
      Second, I wasn't afraid of him, I was only getting annoyed because he was following everywhere, and instead of running I decided to confront him, and he ran away. Nothing else happened.
      People respond to these kind of situations according to their personality, so it's not ok to criticize anyone. Some choose to ignore it, others to run, some to hide and others to confront it. Either one is ok!

    When I visited Japan at 19, some old guy saw me sitting on a train and started hitting on me awkwardly. I was on a trip with my university, so my professor came over and saved me. There are creepy people in every country!!

      If anything, it's Tokyo that's creepy. Especially with all the stuff we saw in the video. The rural and mountainous regions of Japan shouldn't be that bad.

    • @kizzy3563
      @kizzy3563 7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      Yes, technically at 19 I was an adult and it is not illegal to hit on an adult, but you're ignoring a huge detail that made this situation NOT OKAY. I was uncomfortable and scared in that instance and he knew that. I made it very clear I was not enjoying the situation. This man was also over 60, there is no doubt about that. He knew I was a young foreigner and out of my element, and he still invaded my personal space and made inappropriate comments. I would have eventually removed myself, but it did not excuse what he did. There are lines that should be drawn, and he had crossed those lines. And how would you know whether or not old guys hit on young women? Are you a young woman? What sort of experience do you have to make such a bold statement?
      It's honestly pretty gross that you're trying to make me feel bad for an experience I didn't even ask for, and for sharing it in a video where another young women had a similar experience. I also want to add that while I was 19, I did not look my age. I never have. I could have been underage and he approached me when I was sitting alone. He made a bad choice, and I'm thankful my Japanese professor stepped in to redirect the conversation. He did save me.
      Who honestly wants attention through sharing these sorts of experiences? What happened to me has happened to many other women. We are allowed to talk about it without others trying to shift the blame onto us! Shame on people like you...

    • @kizzy3563
      @kizzy3563 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      He was making advancements on me, so how about sexual harassment? As long as I felt uncomfortable and he knew that, he had no business continuing what he was doing. But did he stop? No. What are you trying to get at exactly?

    • @kizzy3563
      @kizzy3563 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      You're right that I did not include that I was uncomfortable in my initial comment, that was my fault. However, it should be pretty clear by now that I in fact was. How uncomfortable I was in the situation wasn't based on his age but rather his actions. May I also add that flirting/hitting on others and making inappropriate sexual comments are two different things! I wasn't rude towards him, but I did ask him to please stop. He didn't stop though, and that was when my professor came in. If I was in my own country perhaps I would have dealt with the issue better. Perhaps if I was older and had had more experience dealing with situations like that I also would have dealt with the situation better. This man did not have good intentions (something I'm sure you'll try and debate me on,) and he was taking advantage of the circumstance: I was young, I was foreign, and I looked alone. Would you not agree that if a man or women is making another person uncomfortable with sexual advancements, and they are aware of this, that they should stop? And he didn't... so what? Am I still somehow "the victim of my own perceptions?" You act like you know the whole story. You don't, and I don't particularly feel like sharing them with you. Don't make assumptions and try and shift blame. I know what kind of situation I was in, I don't need lecturing from someone I don't know online.

      There is a fear of the person turning violent.
      If someone does this regularly, they can feel threatened by being exposed. If they feel threatened, and are already behaving in ways that show they don't respect boundaries, then there is a good chance they will become violent.
      Most women experience/have experienced situations where guys have become violent over even just pointing out they are doing something that bothers them. Or not playing along with vulgar and creepy "jokes."
      This kind of fear happens when trying to protect themselves, because of real experiences with guys turning angry and aggressive. It's why so many women will give polite smiles and laughs to creepy guys who are harassing them.

      I suppose it goes both ways. the darker side of following someone (I don't use stalking btw) secretly and without that person being aware, has finally caught up to her. But I've heard a saying that nuke radiation has kinda messed with their minds and all this weird stuff comes about - although it sounds far-fetched, it could be a cause.

    I'd try this if you are a girl being stalked/followed by a guy:
    Go into a department store or some big mall and see if he follows you, if YES then go into a women's *lingerie* shop or section of a store where they sell bras and underwear and stuff, these places are usually pink and girly. Most men would be hesitant to go in there and it's highly likely they'll only be other women in there.
    If the guy follows you inside, it'll not only look pretty weird and creepy to other people cause he's in a women's underwear store/shop section, but also he'll most likely be warded off due to being spotted easily. If he waits for you outside I'd strongly suggest telling a shop assistant or manager and say you're being followed, and they can either get someone (like the mall security) to come and make him leave or they'll contact authorities. He'll *ALSO* be on the shop/mall cameras and you have evidence if the dude ever tries to follow you again.
    Just a note: Stalking is a BIG problem in certain countries (especially Japan that is going through a stalking crisis right now), I think it may be because anime and the media may have glamorized stalking a bit, making it seem okay or romantic but it's *NOT*. If anyone reading this is being stalked in any way via the internet or being followed (etc), contact the authorities and check to see the legal help for victims of stalking for your country/state/region.
    Trust me, it's better to get help and stop it if it's making you anxious or uncomfortable or worse than to just shrug it off and think you're being paranoid or that the person who is following you is just shy and unable to show their feelings. Stalkers can come off as being friendly or flattering by giving gifts like flowers to the victim but sometimes it *can* and *will* turn sour and dangerous quickly, with even some cases leading to murder.
    Not trying to scare anyone but seriously guys, be careful and stay safe xx
    (I'm legit gonna try and put this on some videos about stalking to try and advise other people on what to do if they're being stalked. I just though I'd say that in case anyone sees this comment again)

    You stay safe too! I was the girl you ate with in your NOA Cafe waffle video from almost a year ago. After I left you and your friends, I ran into a guy outside a conbini near my hostel. He stopped me and tried to get me to go drinking with him. When I declined and started walking away, he swatted me on the behind and laughed. I had to hide in a different store for a while before I felt safe enough to walk the rest of the way to my hostel because I didn't want him to follow me.

      No, its more easier to do than say. Having the mind set to be passive
      and do nothing when you're being harass or violated is just... I can't
      even think of a proper term for it. For a lack of a better term, let's
      just say stupid. That's how a lot of bad things happen to women because
      they don't do anything to fight back and just let it happen when you should
      be kicking and screaming. Haven't you heard of the semi-disturbing
      saying that "No means yes"?

    I was stalked in my own country and I was only 14. I was shopping in a busy market with my mom and sister but then realised that there were two guys touching my hand and following me and because of that I was distracted and lost sight of my mom and sister but they kept following me. I was really scared I tried to lose them by walking quickly into the crowd or going inside stores but it was no use they would wait for me until I came out. It kept going for around two hours until it became dark but thankfully my dad found me and I immediately burst into tears.

    Ah! The same thing happened to me in Akihabara when I was 17 - and Harajuku, he followed me on the subway all the way there. He kept coming after me and even tried to grab me, I was so scared and uncomfortable I ended up running and getting on a random shinkansen because I knew he couldn't follow me on that (at least, not without a very expensive ticket. I had the foreigners' train pass so it seemed like a good idea). I was lost in 5 completely different cities for 10 hours, without a phone and none of my family knowing where I was. When I heard the closing bells of the last train station I was in, I became so distraught I couldn't even remember how to say "I'm lost" properly, so I just collapsed and started crying in the corner saying "maigo ni, maigo ni, watashi wa maigo ni"...
    It was this day, when I had just witnessed the worst of Japan, I also witnessed the best. As I sat in that corner sobbing, so many strangers tried to help me. An old man who took the time to understand my broken rambling Japanese and personally took me the boarding area I hadn't been able to find, a young woman who missed her own train to point me to the last train that departed to Tokyo; and the staff of the Tokyo station who helped get me to the local police department down the street, who then reunited me with my family. All this in the span of an hour, with no connection between any of them.
    Even now, 3 years later, I can hardly believe how lucky I was. But you know, the first thing you hear when you step out of the plane into Narita Airport is "yoroshiku onegaishimasu" (which I've always thought of as something like "take care of me"). I don't think you're meant to respond, but I was so excited to be in Japan that I said it right back. And they did. I still don't know the names of those that helped me, and I probably never will. But I will never forget them or their kindness, and the immense gratitude I owe towards them. Because of them, I don't see this memory or that man as a stain on my time spent there. I see it as a shining example why Japan is an amazing country, with an equally amazing people; I would be happily return at any time, with no fear in my heart.

    • @MagicBlubber
      @MagicBlubber 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Happens to me as a citizen in my own country, just stay safe and keep
      personal note of areas where this happens and minimize travel there
      unless you are safe with friends. Become familiar with friendly shops or
      public locations in the area if it's a problem area, plan around having
      to go through there and have contingency plans to go during crowded
      times. If it becomes chronic or bothers you, tell someone near you on the street if it's weird that someone is
      stalking or harassing you, or even a total stranger if it's an emergency
      just don't keep it to yourself.
      It's not fair to whoever this happens, it's not an easy problem to deal
      with.

    I had a similar problem during my high school exchange to Japan, I had people who would take pictures and videos without asking. I also had an incident where my friend and I were being followed at a festival and I didn't want my friend to deal with it too, so I told her to start running through the crowd and we eventually lost him. I was also groped on a crowded escalator, I'm just happy I wasn't wearing a skirt or dress... I had only worn a skirt once in public during the 10 months I was there, but after all the cat-calling and creepy business men coming up behind me telling me how cute I was, I was too scared... The only other place I wore a skirt was to school and Disney land. I never wear revealing clothing, but as you know, summer time is hot and it's normal to wear less clothing. That didn't mean that I wore short shorts and a tank top or asked for attention... It doesn't happen all the time, but it's not like this sort of thing doesn't exist in Japan.

    Hi Cathy! Yes, definitely do a video on it. I'm totally interested to know if japan is really safe. It's so scary that that guy was following you. It's good he wasn't able to follow you to your house. Always bring pepper spray or taser with you. Please do shop around Akihabara or just show us places of interest. Anything that is kawaii or unusual. It's my dream to go to Japan someday and buy kawaii stuff. Again, stay safe and more power!

    • @LDLK
      @LDLK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      There are many perverts in Japan, they usually like to target white females because they are obsessed with them. They usually operate in places like Akihabara, etc. Please note that there are many unsafe places in Tokyo. Pepper spray and taser are illegal in Japan. Then again, they most likely just stalk you and 'attack' you when you alone. If you go with friends, maybe they stalk but it's unlikely they can do stuffs. Go spent time in cafe if you are alone and stalked, if they still do, go to police station, theres a lot of it.
      Generally, Japan is very safe country. I am female and I go out night and day without any problems in my 30 years of life.

      しえみ oh i see! i didn't know there are places where pepper spray and tasers are not allowed, considering that it's not deadly. anyway, i agree that prevention is better than cure. it's better to just go around with friends.

    Its definitely a topic people need to know more about if they want to come over to Japan and stay for a year or so. It seems to be an issue that's becoming abit of a problem in Japan (at least in cities I believe). And of course if you like to wear alternative fashion you might draw more attention from them.. which sucks ;u;

    My friend and I just got stalked by someone in Japan after exiting a cafe yesterday. We checked to see if he was following us and he was. We didn’t split up and go home because I think he was targeting mostly me and I didn’t want him following me or my friend while walking home alone. He even followed us down the stairs to the police box! He was standing next to it about 20 feet away pretending to be on his phone while we were talking with the police. They talked with him, did a full body search, and bag search, and then, they escorted him into the police box to interrogate him. He was still looking at me many times more than my friend while he was in the police box with no smile of kindness at all even before this and it looked more like a look of disgust as if he wanted to follow us and get rid of us foreigners. It was creepy. He looked like he was on drugs and he kept eyeing me more than my asian friend. (Me: White American.) The best advice I can give you is always to report it. No matter how big or small the situation is. Trust me. It will save your life one day. I did this, and he never stalked us again. I didn’t see him anywhere the next day. The police men are so nice to help us keep him contained in the police box out of my request until my friend and I were out of sight. I escorted my friend home first and I then watched my back while quickly walking to the station to get home. Honestly, you really should report this to the police. Don’t miss your chance to easily lure the guy into the police station and give him a strict warning. Stalking is dangerous. No matter how harmless it may seem in the beginning and the fact that he does nothing to you. It’s better to report it now before the situation gets worse or escalates any further. Better safe than sorry as they say.

    This may be a stupid question, but do people actually _live in Akihabara?_
    It seems so Anime/Manga oriented that's it's all just businesses like stores and cafes related to them, but is there actual living quarters in or near the main streets of Akihabara? Lofts, apartments, hotels, or suburban neighborhoods?

I guess I stood out as a foreign girl. I kept texting my friend telling me there was a weirdo and to hurry and she was late to meet me from work. He kept watching me from afar as I moved to wait next to the police box. He finally came up AGAIN and said "ok, lets go to my house now", grabbed my wrist and attempted to pull me away. I violently shook his hand off and said "don't touch me!"
    He eventually left, but I felt so uncomfortable going home in the same station late that night :///

    I lived in Akihabara, a five minute walk from the station. Too many things either don't add up, or are very likely being misconstrued. The layout of Akihabara is such that many people are going the same direction... as well, many otaku do randomly wander around the area. I've spent many hours wandering around aimlessly, soaking up the atmosphere and just letting my mind wander. I'm sure I've passed the same person multiple times, it does NOT mean I was stalking them, or they stalking me.
    Akiba is NOT a dangerous place, my country is NOT a dangerous place. If you feel so, the train leaves for Narita every 20 minutes. I'll buy you a one way ticket.

    Thank goodness I'm an extrovert, I'd easily just run to you and say hi, and probably ask to take a selfie too.
    Secondly, I've played a game called "Akiba's Trip", and I kind of recognize some of the places you went by, I'm also a fan of Love Live and Steins;Gate (yea, I know it's an odd combo) and they also use parts of Akiba in their respective anime.
    Third, idk if this is concidered brave or stupid, but if I noticed that someone followed me, I'd go up to them and confront them.

      Yea, the game is actually better than I thought, though if you're going to play it via Steam, then I'd suggest you also get yourself an Xbox controler, becuase this game isn't keyboard friendly.

    I did hear about a male getting.... not necessarily stalked but... my friend's ex-bf had a Japanese girlfriend before my friend (she's Mexican) and this girl once went into his apartment, after they were no longer dating and trashed the whole thing. So something creepy like stalking could definitely happen to men. Be safe everybody!

      Don't know why I was recommended this video. I was just watching videos about lizards. But honestly, I'd think it would more likely be staged if she were recording a "stalker." An actual stalker would bolt at the first sight of a camera.

  • @Bawbster1
    @Bawbster1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree that sounds like a scary situation, but it is NOT stalking. Those people were just following you. To quote you, "THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THAT". I had an ex-girlfriend stalk me for 2.5 years. She tried to get me beat-up many times. She entered my name in tonnes of draws, I know because I won like 5 prizes from places I'd never been to. I even won Karate lessons from a place I'd never been to, but was just around the corner from her parent's place... I started getting weird mail... not to mention driving by my house everyday, sometimes parking down the street for over an hour... and that's just the mild shit. If you've never been truly stalked, you have no clue. People who have been stalked for real, can't stand people trivializing it by saying they were stalked just because someone followed you for an hour or sat beside you in a cafe (that happened to another ex of mine... and I set her straight on the subject, believe me - the guy was no threat and was very nice, a bit slow. His crime was just trying to start a small conversation with her). If you do that video, maybe try to contact some real stalking victims and then put things into perspective. I find too many women nowadays use that term very loosely and use it as some sort of sick status symbol with their friends. That subject would make an even better video.
    edited in -> on Feb 18: Legal definition of Stalking: Criminal activity consisting of the *_repeated_* following and harassing of another person. Stalking is a distinctive form of criminal activity composed of a series of actions that taken individually might constitute legal behavior. For example, sending flowers, writing love notes, and waiting for someone outside her place of work are actions that, on their own, are not criminal. When these actions are coupled with a disregard for the victim's desire to be left alone by the perpetrator or the intent to instill fear or injury, however, they may constitute a pattern of behavior that is illegal.

      @darlagoddesshate 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is no such thing as "true stalking" Stalking is continued form of harassment, following, etc. in most places. And many stalkers escalate quickly in their obession and physically attack people or property. Some do not. For years the stalker of Jodi Ford mailed her constantly, followed her, and tried to meet her...then one day he decided to shoot Ronald Reagan. Decades later he was released and once again was found in posession of Jodi Foster memorbilia...they institutionalized him because no matter how calm he may have peered before he escalated violently. Some stalkers do nothing. Some do nothing for years. Some follow you down an alley way and for some reason she should just trust this guy following her around? Should she have just waited until he did that especially in a culture with well researched gender and justice dynamics that often excuse men's actions?
