  • Amine inversion is basically quantum tunneling effect where the nitrogen atom protons tunnel through a potential energy barrier that allows the molecule to invert its shape.
    In the second row of the periodic table, elements have relatively small differences between the size their s- and p-orbitals. Therefore, the orbitals of NR3
    can go from sp3 to sp2 with relatively little energy increase, so an amine can become planar and then reorient with the inverted stereochemistry. The same occurs with carbanions. Similarly, for oxonium cations do this, as well, and I would even guess that it would happen more quickly due to oxygen's smaller size.
    The reason we don't see this with NF3 is because orbitals with more p character are more affected by induction, so the highly electronegative fluorine atoms would lose electron density during inversion, which would be energetically unfavorable (to the point that it doesn't occur readily).
    Chiral phosphines do not invert because the size difference between s- and p-orbitals for larger atoms is greater, so converting 𝑠𝑝3 orbitals to 𝑠𝑝2 would require much contraction and, therefore, more energy than for the analogous amine.

    Guruji I have a doubt.
    It is given in to compare basic strength
    p)CH3- q)NH2- r)OH- s)F-
    Taking into consideration the inversion I thought the answer would be q>p>r>s .
    But in MS Chouhan Book it's given p>q>r>s. Please tell me which one is correct.

      Also sir said that this Umbrella inversion occurs in sp3 compounds with 1Lone pair but in NH2- there are 2 Lone pair so it won't happen here !!

    Sp3 से sp2 to wo bonded pair jaate hai, lone pair to pure p orbital me chala jaata है, jisse aur energy बढ़ जानी chahiye और basicity बढ़ jaani चाहिए??

    sir i am not able to understand ki in 2nd period size of s and p-orbital ka relation unversion of sp3 to sp2 se kaise hai.
    I got it for phosphine kyuki vaha hybridisation consider nahi ho rahi hai but jaha consider kar rahe hai vaha kaise relate kar skte hai

    Sir isn't the energy barrier big enough as resonance of benzene is also about 125 kJ / mol which we consider very very large which is nearly 5 times the energy barrier in amine inversion it should be considered big enough
