Game cover art has been a mixed bag for so long now. There are so many amazing ones and yet so many just bland/ boring ones too. The reverse art for my Bioshock Infinite Xbox 360 case is amazingly simple and I display it as such. But for me nothing beats og Dead Space art and most importantly, og Demon's Souls art. The original japanese cover art for Demon's Souls is one of my all time favorite box arts for a game. Its just so... bleak and melancholy. I love it.
Ok bricky, in defense of bioshock infinite that wasn't the original plan. Initially the devs wanted to heavily feature elizabeth on the front cover, either alone or at least side by side with booker. This makes sense considering she's arguably the main character of the game, even more so than booker. The execs, however, decided to go for dude with gun to appeal to a broader demographic of college bros (since obviously the guys who play a couple matches of fifa or nfl or maybe cod per month are the ideal target for a highly philosophical and metaphorical single player campaign), so the current box art was the result. That said at least the devs heavily insisted to at least put liz on the back, which is better than nothing i guess.
@@Jormyyy2013 was a different time. Teenage boy was the assumed default gamer and it was still widely seen as a hobby for manchildren if you were an adult who played videogames regularly. It took a long time to overcome that stereotype and finally have games be treat as a serious medium. Building on that progress, it's only the past couple of years where the industry has branched out and started to include wider demographics.
@@Vincent-tz4jl oh for sure. I was precisely in that target demographic of straight teenage boys who craved edgy action. I've mostly moved past games like that as I just don't find them that interesting anymore, with some exceptions where I like to indulge.
Additional comment about the Wolfenstein New Order art; it does the same thing the Killzome games do. It depicts the villians of the game instead of the protagonists. It challenges the viewer it pick up the game and defeat these depicted villains.
I feel like for your box art to really hit you need to nail at least one of two things: just a purely aesthetically interesting image, and some degree of visual storytelling. Like the thing that elevates that Wolfenstein cover over other 'guy with a gun' covers is the implication that the faceless thug is just one of many, and it has strong, bold colour direction. That Mass Effect 1 cover doesn't feel all that unique to me conceptually, but the fact that they depicted the looming threat of Saren hanging over the main characters at all does so much to elevate it imo
More accurate title would be 'Box Art goes hard' alot of the discounted entries were also fantastic but since its not 'one character dominates the foreground/villain dominates background' they were put down for it. I agree with most of the entries for sure but this was just a cover art Vibe Check
To be fair to Halo 2, at least it communicated dual-wielding was now a thing, slightly redesigned suit, and an entirely new place with the city and change in color palate in the background
I guess box art will always have a place, even with digital becoming the norm you still need eye-catching cover art when scrolling through whatever store you look for games on and it's something you'll always see when launching a game on console so it might as well look good and stand out.
i will say GTFO has a based cover art, BUT... every-single-announcement image they have is 10x better cause it shows how colorful, how aggressive and how passive the game is all at the same time also- ANY art of The binding of Isaac art goes pretty hard, any of em
Damn, I wish I wa there to recommend the PVZ Garden Warfare box art. The contrast between the cartoony characters being set in a gritty warzone-like environment in a suburban neighborhood is sooooooo good to me
Yeah!!! I never played the original cause our game cube broke before I was old enough to play, but I remember it being so cool. Then I got the second one on the wii and it was cool but fine, if I played against other people I think I would have been so much better but the wii was considered outdated when I got the game.
Good news regarding Tango Game Works: Krafton bought and resurrected the studio with the intent of creating a hi-fi rush sequel. It sucks that they were initially closed down but this is the closest thing to a happy ending we could have hoped for.
I don’t think this is true. From my knowledge the only thing Krafton bought is the Hi-Fi Rush IP. Tango is still dead and Microsoft still holds the rights to Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo
I am totally with Bricky with the Armored Core 6 box art. I really don't like the AC6 box art but I love AC6. Also, I like Replicant's art a lot, the 3D one vs the concept art. I like both Replicant's remake's art but the American Release of Automata is gross and I don't even really like the JP cover art either but that's less a problem of the art and implications of the game.
not a huge fan of either of the 2077 covers/posters shown, the PS5 release had fem V with her back to the viewer and the title written out in negative space over the SAMURAI jacket, that's the good one. It's the one I use for the game's desktop icon.
20:25 They are decidedly mid games but with some high level highs. The twist in Danganronpa 2 blew my MIND. Same with the opening twist for V3 even if the later twist in V3 didn't go as hard

I am with with the "gas mask with blazing red eyes" look. Always loved it.
I am literally shaking with anticipation of Bricky playing RDR2
wait did he say somewhere hes gonna play rdr2? i havent watched the whole vid yet.

@@NGBH No, but I just really want him to. And when he does, I'm gonna have a good day 😁
The man needs him some Yeehaw Skyrim in his life
Would love to watch him play that masterpiece! I'm currently replaying it.
I was surprised by the Lack of Left 4 Dead 1/2 cover art in this video. Those are some obvious wins for me.
Borderlands 3 really does look great tho. Completes the picture for the zealous psycho stuff.
“I have the shiniest Meat Bicycle!”
“I’m the conductor of the poop train!”
The Darkness 2 has one of the HARDEST covers ever and I'm upset it hasn't gotten more recognition
Almost forgot about that one. Definitely agreed it goes hard.
Also, shout-out for it being made by Digital Extremes

SpaceMarine 1’s art is so good it’s a shame it didn’t come up. Also I LOVED battalion wars.
upcoming "Avowed" Box art absolutely Slaps.
The left 4 dead series might have the most iconic box art imo, i remember thinking the cover of L4D2 was the coolest shit ever as a kid.

Battlefield 1 is peak “man with gun” cover art. Also, surprisingly not “man with gun” but Black Ops Cold War also rules
I'm surprised no one brought up Dead Space 2's box art.
There were three versions of the box art, but one of them went ffuucckkiinng hard.
Additional comment about the Wolfenstein New Order art; it does the same thing the Killzome games do. It depicts the villians of the game instead of the protagonists. It challenges the viewer it pick up the game and defeat these depicted villains.
I think it's more just that they know their villains are the only interesting looking part of the game.
Killzone was so tuff
I always liked the box arts for Prey 2017, Evolve Ultimate edition & System Shock 2 myself.

Speaking of Bioware, the box art for the dragon age games was pretty striking, specifically DA: origins; Very interesting use of literal white space
I also love how they always have a dragon silhouette there.
From this video I have come to realise that the colour red gives bricky the good tingles.
The transformers fall of cybertron boxart really bangs
I love a good graphic design review episode.
Man I was rooting for that guy that suggested Pacific Drive that game and cover are such a vibe.
Silent Hill Downpour's boxart goes hard too, yeah it's guy with axe, but the cropping, the composition and color is super good.
Ape escape shot me with memories I forgot I had
33:10 I unironically think Bricky would enjoy trying to unravel the tangled mess that is the presentation of the plot of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.
Bricky finna make an 80 part warhammer 40k iceberg vid
More of a fan of "man with knife staring directly into my soul"
Risk of Rain 2 box art is PEAK
The alt Titanfall 2 cover that’s from the become one trailer is so clean. Also shoutout to mechwarrior 5s cover. The Atlas is just that imposing

The best cover for me will forever be the halo to steel book back cover art, that shit went so hard
Outlast: The Whistleblower has great box art. The one with the finger. Probably the best in the series.

Lost Judgment's boxart is so fucking goofy yet I love it.
Judgment, the 1st one, has great boxart though.
for me peak is left 4 dead covers. Just using a left hand with 4 fingers cause the thumb is bitten off is so good, same with two.

i really like the bayonetta 2 cover then again its probably one of my favorite vidya so im biased
