My boyfriend was going to buy me a brand new pair of $170 duck boots that I had my eye on and need, but I told him to wait and I found them secondhand for $60 and he purchased those instead. He was in shock that I was actually excited to accept a used pair instead of requiring them to be brand new. I figured, why not? They’ve only been worn twice, and they’re already out there- they need a home, I need boots. It just makes sense. I couldn’t in good conscience let him spend so much on something without seeing if I could find it used first.
I have a cousin who makes everyone soap! We all love it. Also, my mom gifts everyone homemade pickles, throughout the year she gets the jars back, and the cycle repeats. Homemade gifts are the best.
An America the Beautiful pass is a great gift! It gets you into national parks and national forests for free, it's what I asked my parents for this year for my birthday.
My mom’s love language is definitely gift giving. She buys my siblings and I gifts for every holiday (Valentines day, Easter, Halloween etc) even though we’re all 25+. For minor holidays it’s usually candy and a card so I don’t try to talk her out of it. But for birthdays and Christmas she gets sooooo many gifts. She grew up low income with a lot of siblings so she gets a lot of joy out of giving us a lot of presents. It used to be a lot of nick nack stuff & random decor which drove me crazy because I didn’t want the stuff and she refused to get me less or nothing. The last few years we’ve made lists on google docs with direct links and now she sticks almost exclusively to the list! I’ve been able to get some more expensive zero waste things (and stuff I’ll actually use) and my mom still gets to feel like she’s spoiling me. This is the best compromise/ solution I’ve come up with if people won’t stop getting you gifts
My girls and I made a pact not to get each other Christmas presents, instead we go out for a nice dinner together. That's gonna be tomorrow and I can't wait 😍
The problem I have is that my family completely ignores my wishlist of things I actually need in favor of getting me cheap crap I don't even want! 😭 not only is it wasteful but it has always made me feel like crap personally.
My MIL is very much a giver (gifts, food, hugs, ALL) and I love it. I have just accepted that I’ll always get new things from her. I take it into account now (especially with clothing) and just thrift when I buy my own. It is a tough balance and I totally understand the frustration when family members still buy you things when you want to minimize your impact.
Thank you for all the ideas! One of my friends knits so she created a system where if we gift her yarn and make a request she will make the thing with the yarn and gift it to us for our birthday or Christmas. I think that’s really cool!
Loool a bidet! As an Italian, is a STAPLE in every household in the country. Not having one would be like not having a sink lol. Good for you for being open to the idea and showing your family members what a great thing a bidet is 😅
My tip for getting your family to give you things that are sustainable: make a wishlist with tickets for things you want to see, memberships to museums, products you use all the time (the year I got 6 months worth of my favorite Shampoo Bars was awesome), and CHOCOLATES.
One time my brother couldn’t find a gift for our mom, so I suggested that he could get her some nice coffee. He ended up finding a small shop that sold sustainable coffee and got to see their shop. Our mom absolutely loved the coffee and my brother got to get her a great sustainable gift and a cute little story to go along with it☺️
Such a firm believer of a functional gift list! My doc sends the gifter right to the specific item, and most of the items are sustainable swaps or needed items that I hold off getting until people need that consumerist reason to buy me something :)
I am the person who refuses not to get gifts. It's my love language! But I am very much aware of all the Stuff people have around their houses, so getting gifts has become really difficult for me 😂
I always make a wish list lol. They're so useful! Books are always a win for me, though I don't always ask for them because I tend to buy them myself throughout the year. I always think gift cards are a good idea. Some people think they are too impersonal, but as long as you get a card for a store or restaurant you know the recipient shops at or likes, then it's not impersonal, especially if you write a nice card, too.
i've been wearing conscious step socks for a while and i can confirm they're comfortable, durable, and have the right amount of insulation to not be clammy. they never slip down into my shoes. they're easy to wash. they have some cute patterns. so i can vouch for them as a great gift.
My favorite gift for someone newly graduating college is clothes to wear to work (or interviews). For example, for me my go-to is a black sheath dress that is comfortable and long enough to be comfortable in professional situations - stylish but not too trendy and gives me confidence when I'm going on interviews. I've had the same one for more than a decade and I try to get something similar for my dress-wearing family members when they're about to graduate.
If you have someone in your life that likes thick body products, I recommend Alaffia Shea Butter. It does come in plastic, but it is a woman led west African, Certified Fair Trade company with traditionally and handmade Shea butter. It’s almost guranteed to last you months, if not over a year. So many “sustainable” brands use Shea butter that wasn’t made ethically, and I think it’s important to support companies that do. And the person you give it to’s dry winter hands will thank you !
Always helpful. We keep getting asked what the baby needs for both his first Christmas and then first birthday a few days later. I saved 99% of things from my oldest child from a previous relationship. He's getting most of his older brothers toys, since 8 almost 9 years later, are still in excellent shape, and are still being sold to this day and saves us a lot. With that being said, we're drawing blanks with what to tell people. Baby sleds last with each kid to be passed on and then given to a new family to enjoy. Once we know we're done having children, all preemie and newborn baby clothes will be getting donated to our local hospital for the NICU to use. We will ask for things that we actually need or don't usually buy ourselves. Two years ago I got some of my oldest sons family into shampoo bars which is amazing! Such a helpful little list. I usually bake and will make other goodies to give to family and friends.
Ask them to contribute to a fund for his future school fees! Get them to put the check in a cardboard box so your baby gets something to "unwrap" and then he has boxes to play with...which are every child's favorite thing anyway! 😂
Just wanted to thank you for your effort in making both your gift guide videos and your ginormous lists of links on your blog! It's great to be able to buy from sustainable and ethical brands the one time of year I make major purchases. Thank you so much!
Every year 3 of my friends and I do secret santa and all write down a wishlist of things we want so everyone gets something they would actually use and love :)
Yes to wishlists and bidets!!! And I thought I’d share a consumable gift I got for an upcoming holiday party at work in case it helps anyone because sometimes those $10-15 white elephant budgets make things challenging. A mason jar of popcorn kernels with three Gneiss Spice popcorn seasonings. Gneiss Spice is a small, woman-owned business that sells (mostly organic and sustainably harvested) spices in compostable packaging.
Coming from someone who's family also forces gifts upon them during the holiday season, consumables. From a minimalist standpoint that's all I ask for. Unless its something I really needed anyway then yes! Wishlists are imperative.
I know for a lot of cultures it is more common to give money rather than a physical gift. That is probably the best way to gift because the person can just spend on whatever they want.
Thank you!! I have been making a list for years, it has been very effective. If I need items that could be purchased used, I include photos and ask family to shop second hand. I also get gift cards for a local refill service and I love not having to spend my own for cleaning products during the year.
I have a Japanese style Bidet seat in my house and it's really a must have. Everyone who comes to my house and tries it likes it. My husband can't live without it.
I share a Note of Etsy store links with my husband. That way he still feels like he is shopping and getting to choose specifics; While I know it’s something I’ll love, use, and from a sustainable producer.
Definitely needed this. Some of these recommendation I hadn't thought of. This year I'm reusing a bunch of jars and making candles for folks since I can't afford to buy everyone sustainable candles and just making a lot of my gifts. I love getting functional gifts and giving them as well but I think it can be difficult if you don't know the person very well but I try my best. Experiences is a great idea!
Years ago I asked my family to stop buying me gifts or I’d be returning them. They now give me a gift card to target or Whole Foods, or cash. They don’t understand, but I’m grateful they respect my wish. I was however given a Trump doll that you slam on surfaces to take your anger out on & I can’t really be mad at that 😂 I’ve been using a $15 “travel” bidet for a few years & love it! I like to propagate plants as gifts instead of seeds. Love the vest ✌🏼🌱
Free the Ocean has lots of low waste gifts. Also, I bought a simple life calendar from Appalachia Science In the Public Interest for my secret Santa gift. I also bought ten trees from One Tree Planted and printed off the certificate for that and tucked it in the Christmas card.
I LOVE watching this video every year! I tried to come up with some experiential gifts for knitters this year, and this was my favorite category to brainstorm. Some of my ideas were buying tickets to a fiber festival, booking the knitter a photo studio sessions (if they have social media for their knitting), and purchasing a class pass for different crafting.
Just ordered socks from Conscious Step for my neighbor lady friends thanks to your well timed holiday gift giving suggestions! YAY!!! So excited as I know they will appreciate everything about them! And...I'll be 'gift wrapping' them in re-usable storage bags. Genius!!!! Thanks Shelbi!
i found that PLANNING thoroughly for what gifts i am going to get for each person, have a set amount (min smaller 3 pieces i decided), shopping locally, and asking questions (yes okay it may be a bit of spoilers for folks but they know i do it for a purpose) in order to pick the right gift that will be used for a long time! and. as a result i saved myself a lot of money and adding impulse items!
OMG I JUST LEARNED SO MUCH. And got so many gift ideas for family and friends. Literally everything you mentioned I was like “WHAT?? SOMETHING LIKE THAT EXISTS?? That’s perfect for _____.” Also those concentrates? Wtf I am amazed. Thanks for the quality content once again 🙏🏼🙌🏼
Thank you Shelbi! ❤️ Just finished binge watching all your past gift guides lol…also I feel like a membership to Skillshare or something similar would be a good idea for someone looking to learn something new! My boyfriend was just telling me about how he wishes he could learn a very specific European language from a country that his ancestors are from but our school doesn’t offer any classes and I immediately thought of Skillshare and I’m definitely going to be looking into it to see if they have the language and look into buying him a membership! I know you also have a discount code with them, not sure if it still works or not because I think you partnered with them a while ago, but I’m definitely going to look into it!
My biggest question about the milk is…does the milk froth? I make lattes every day, no joke. So frothing is a key factor for me. I’m still excited to try it!
We do secret Santa with the family and we provide lists! Some people are better at providing a list than others lol. But I try really hard to be mindful of things people need and will actually use.
Got suckered into a work secret Santa -- got conscious step socks to build homes AND a beanie from tentree. Shipped directly to their house of course (remote working). Thank you Shelbi!!!!!!!
because of you I realized I was already pretty sustainable as a teenager but now im even more and trying to be more kicking for next year like actually getting my hands dirty and experimenting thank you Shelbi for teaching me all that I know I hope you and Madison have a good thankgiving and ill see you on Saturday for your guys vlog 💙 much love from Stephie
We have a secret santa thingy at work next week. I got a nice glass bottle of juice, and a spice mix to go with it, so they can make their own traditional glögi drink :) if they don't like glögi, they can just drink the juice as is and use the spices for other things. I was also thinking about getting a reflector, they are always needed. I don't know how common they are elsewhere, but atleast here in nordic they are a necessity. I'm also a big supporter for regifting. If you get something that you don't necessarily have use for, why not give it to someone else who might enjoy it a bit more. Ofc it would be rude to tell people you intent to regift, but when it's done "secretly" I really don't see the harm.
I am very specific about what I like so I always say that the best gifts for me are single use items like candles, bath bombs, soaps, sweets. Anything I can enjoy without it sitting in my house forever.
The last two years my family "agreed" to mostly forego Christmas gifts (my mom still bought us things and we still bought gifts for the little kids of the family). My older brother was so excited and was hoping it would be a trend going forward. But this year, my mom couldn't take it anymore and kept pestering us about what we wanted to do for gifts. My brother kept dropping hints to just not get him anything, but she wasn't biting. So I finally "suggested" that we should just draw names and each just all buy one gift for one person. So alas, our days of no-gift-Christmas appear to be over. But we do always make wish lists. I frankly don't know how people buy gifts without having a wish list to go off of. I'd never know what anybody wanted otherwise.
I'm actually doing craft projects right now that I got as kits for my mom and my aunt. I wanted to do them but didn't want the product afterwards so I picked designs they would like!
I've put on a good bit of weight working from home and slacking in the excercise/healthy eating so I'm in need of new clothes that actually fit and dont hurt. I ended up going on vinted and sent some things to my partner to get me, everything's second hand and I'm so excited! I don't care that they're pre-owned because they're good condition and new to me... Saved the partner some money too lol
hi, shelbi!! have you ever watched the youtube channel wabi sab-e? they’re a couple that has been renovating an old farmhouse in nova scotia for the past five years, and they have such a wonderful mindset when it comes to reusing materials and turning old furniture and other items into something new and useful for them. they remind me a lot of you, and i think you would enjoy their channel!
so excited to hear about joi! ive become lactose intolerant and have stuck to plant based milks for the last 5-6 years. tetrapacks are always my issue as i don’t always have the time to make flax or oat milk (which are the easiest for me to make). glad i can support the earth, a good company, and your channel all in once purchase :)
There's a lot of stuff in this guide that I just would like to make personally now that I didn't think about or know were options, like the plant milk concentrates, that's awesome.
I just bought socks from Dedoles as Christmas gifts. They are an European brand and I just love their socks, they look super cute. They also planted thousands of trees and they have raised a lot of money for the WHO for the covid pandemic so I really love their brand and I am just glad that you think socks are a great gift aswell :)
I bought my mom the starter kit from Blueland, a second-hand scarf for my brother, and a second-hand puzzle for my sister. All the gifts I am asking for are donations or second-hand things I NEED.
This year I’ve got gifts for ppl they will like but not overspent on them. My list is a small list. My friend and my sister and my hubby get gifts, my niece and brother in law get vouchers one for iTunes and one for cinema. My parents are going to get a family meal out at a new restaurant near us. I’ve asked for things I want and they will do that for me as they’d rather get things we want or need than things we don’t. I got an outdoor rug already from my parents and hubby is getting a newish sat nav that works and updates. ( ps only bad arguments we have are over the sat nav getting the directions wrong when we go out on holiday or for a day out). My mum and aunt I also take out for afternoon tea when we can meet up with my aunt again x
My family definitely goes all out but I'm lucky because they want a very specific gift list so I always ask for stuff I really need and try to get them to get it from good stores. My mom is getting my bf a lot of ten trees stuff which is awesome ( he does actually need clothes without holes lol)
My Go-To for gifts is Rareform!! They make all sorts of bags and accessories out of old billboards. Every piece is unique, prevents billboards from entering the waste stream, and is incredibly durable. I've gotten wallets for my dad and uncles, pencil cases for my little cousins, toiletry bags and purses! Its always a hit
SO many good ideas on this video. I have been trying to make the move to plant based milk. I never thought of oat milk concentrate!! I have already ordered some for myself. Gifting a bidet as well this year because *chef's kiss*....

My go-to every year is to bake cookies and present them in a reusable box. So much easier than trying to figure out what to buy people
I have a cousin who makes everyone soap! We all love it. Also, my mom gifts everyone homemade pickles, throughout the year she gets the jars back, and the cycle repeats. Homemade gifts are the best.
I frequently gift food because I love baking! Someone's birthday? I'm the go-to cake baker! Christmas? Gingerbread cookies for the win!
Great idea
Loovveee homemade snacks ik ure appreciated

Right. I'd rather have 1 thing that costs $20. Than 20 things that cost $1.
Yes! I feel bad not liking 25% (or more) of the gifts i get. Generic body sets, unliked scents, ect. Never going to get used/loved!
I donate those things to rescue missions because they don’t waste anything.

because of you I realized I was already pretty sustainable as a teenager but now im even more and trying to be more kicking for next year like actually getting my hands dirty and experimenting thank you Shelbi for teaching me all that I know I hope you and Madison have a good thankgiving and ill see you on Saturday for your guys vlog 💙 much love from Stephie
LOVE the Air B&B experience idea
I'd never know what anybody wanted otherwise.
that JOI coffee creamer went straight to my own wishlist 😂what an awesome idea!
I'm actually doing craft projects right now that I got as kits for my mom and my aunt. I wanted to do them but didn't want the product afterwards so I picked designs they would like!
My parents are giving me tires for my car for Christmas. I made taco, old bay, and ranch seasonings to gift.
They are awesome ☺️
Love that channel!
I always have socks, underpants and soap on my wishlist. 👍
One thing I love doing for presents is making facial scrubs and waxes in glass jars. And you can get the jars from thrift stores.
so excited to hear about joi! ive become lactose intolerant and have stuck to plant based milks for the last 5-6 years. tetrapacks are always my issue as i don’t always have the time to make flax or oat milk (which are the easiest for me to make). glad i can support the earth, a good company, and your channel all in once purchase :)
There's a lot of stuff in this guide that I just would like to make personally now that I didn't think about or know were options, like the plant milk concentrates, that's awesome.
Just a great video! Lovely Christmas🎄 vest😍⛄🎉🎊🎁❄️
.
Lovely tips and so much sustainable advice 🎀
Thank you for the tip with the Airbnb experience! I just found 4hours from me someone who offers a 2 hour walk with goats😍this sounds so good
We have a handheld sprayer bidet at our home. You can get it from any local hardware store 🙂
Thank you so much for making this video, Shelbi! This was super helpful :)
Awesome gift ideas!
No idea the milk we buy is mainly water. Crazy!
I bought my mom the starter kit from Blueland, a second-hand scarf for my brother, and a second-hand puzzle for my sister. All the gifts I am asking for are donations or second-hand things I NEED.
We always just made hundreds of cookies and sweets, put them in nice reusable holiday tins, and gifted those to friends and family
Why you don't have more views and subscribers is beyond me!! You are doing a FANTASTIC job!
Seriously, looking good girl. Your hair looks fantastic.
You read my mind, nice loose leaf teas and a new tea strainer are at the top of my list this year
love love my tushy bidet but I wish id have gotten the one that can be heated water
this is the best gift guide I've ever watched
My family definitely goes all out but I'm lucky because they want a very specific gift list so I always ask for stuff I really need and try to get them to get it from good stores. My mom is getting my bf a lot of ten trees stuff which is awesome ( he does actually need clothes without holes lol)
Would like to see more ideas in a new guide for 2022. Wish you calm and healthy Christmas.
Best gift guide on the internet
Pela is making a counter top composter. Interested in ur thoughts in that. Especially since ur a fellow gardener
Your hair has been really really cute the past couple vids!
This video warmed my icy heart and has inspired me to look a little closer at my shopping and gifting habits.
I love that you have talked about Fillaree and I actually realized I live right by it in NC!
Its always a hit
what a great list. I'm still working on being the best sustainable version of myself and a lot of these are amazing gifts
This was so good, lots of great ideas! And also girl you are GLOW-ING✨
Literally the first suggestion cured my stress about in law gifts!! Thank you ❤
Absolutely awesome ideas....thanks so much!!!!!
SO many good ideas on this video. I have been trying to make the move to plant based milk. I never thought of oat milk concentrate!! I have already ordered some for myself. Gifting a bidet as well this year because *chef's kiss*....
I'm really excited to finally get a bidet that uses warm water once we move! We tried the cold water ones and I don't know how you do it lol
oh my word. This was an amazing video and ive now added so many to the list! I appreciate this so much
