Railway Film: Tangiwai or Bust - Behind the Scenes of a Steam Excursion (2018)

- 65 years on from the tragic Tangiwai Disaster that claimed 151 kiwi lives, at 10.21pm Christmas Eve 1953, we go all out behind the scenes on the efforts of organising and operating a main line steam train excursion. In this mini doco we see interviews, behind the scenes works both on and off the locomotive and of course, lineside action of Ja 1275 and Jb 1236 slogging it out on the North Island Main Trunk Line.
In May 2017, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, KiwiRail, Rail & Maritime Transport Union, Ruapehu Lions Club and Mainline Steam Trust teamed up to organise a Tangiwai Memorial excursion to commemorate the two locomotive crew who did everything in their power to attempt to stop the train, thus saving another 100+ lives, driver Charles Parker and fireman Lance Redman.

A great, albeit tragedy-based, video. I was tacked on behind 'Naughty Joanne'. What a story we had to tell that day - and evening! My memory is of being very conscious that we were following the 'footsteps' of the original people and train - an event that originally occurred when I was 11 months old. 'Joanne' had her own thoughts, however, on re-enacting the tragic trip - and simply didn't want to. For all our dramas that day, I value the memories of each and every one of them - except perhaps of leaving the dignitaries and the people from the Glenbrook train waiting in the freezing cold for an hour or so until we finally got there with the help of our new-found electric buddy

my grandad was supposed to be on that train, he got to the station just as it was pulling out of the station. most of his friends made it on but luckily he didn't

The movie made me tear up, and then watching this didn't help.
The memorial stones are great, well done to those who helped make it happen.
