  • Hydrolysis is breaking apart molecules by reacting with water. It can happen in lots of places, but if SOMETHING + water = Two other somethings, they it's hydrolysis.
    Examples: Breaking apart Esters, Bronsted/Lowry Acids, and ATP.

    I feel like I've been looking fr a good vid like this on hydrolysis wuth a hurricane in a storm or something like that. And ur ATP explanation was perfect, trust me all the vids I've watchd basically say the same thing, it givs u energy.

    Say you have an ester in a ethanol+water solution. How do you make the hydrolysis happen? By adding heat?

    Is this related to hydrolysates, only in the latter, it is enzymes that catalyze the reaction with water? Also, how is hydrololysis different from ionization of ionic compounds in water?

    I'm not a biologist either but I hav a question for you and an explination too... ADP is converted to ATP by the mitochondria in a pretty coplex process using elctrons as energy to pump protons that turn a turbine and that turbine creates energy that is used to bond a phosphate to ADP making it ATP. The ATP is then transfered to the cell where, during hydrolysis, the phosphate that was bonded by the mitochondria is removed and that removal of the phosphate is, as I understand it, what creates the energy for the cell to use. The ADP is then recycled and turned into ATP again by the mitochondria. My question is, why does hydrolysis create energy? What about removing the bond releases energy? I'm not sure what happens to the phosphate, BTW. I only know what I know through self-study and I am interested in learning more. Can you tell me why hydrolysis creates (releases) useable energy?

      It's probably more to do with giving valid information, as somebody who doesn't deal with biology often, they will probably just remember the skimmed version of it

    This is probably really dumb, but how can lipids or other nonpolar substances be hydrolyzed if they're nonpolar....water is polar...I'm self-studying ap bio...yep I'm in trouble

      The carbon is double bonded to O, so one of those bonds can actually delocalize and give the O a - charge (O-). That makes the C atom slightly more positive. Because it's more positive, the Oxygen from H2O will attack there (because the O in H2O is slightly negative). Opposites attract, essentially.

    Thanks for the vid! It helped me with my chemistry course. Just a note, I think you meant that the H2S4 donated an ELECTRON, not a proton. If it would have donated a proton, it would have changed into a completely different element.

      Hydrogen is 1 proton and 1 electron, an H+ ion is just 1 proton. So you say it donated a proton, (the H+ turns H2O into H3O+)

      99.98% of Hydrogen doesn't have any neutrons. Hydrogen without an electron is is overwhelmingly just a proton.

    Technically, we don't need to completely break the molecule apart in order for it to be hydrolysis. Take, for instance, a cyclic ring attached by an epoxy, boom... still hydrolysis.

    when an ATP ( 3 Phosphat + Ribuse + adenine ) hydrolyse, it break one phostphat from the ATP so It's called ADP ( 2 Phosphat + Ribuse + Adenine )
