Those mushrooms you found are pheasant back mushrooms. They are delicious when you can find them before they get big and chewy/leathery. But the freshest part on the big ones is usually still good. I like putting smoked paprika and garlic on them to make mushroom bacon. They aren't the prized morels, but they are still a good edible mushroom. They are good dehydrated too and used as a powder. It's a good way to make use of the big ones you've got there. Or could perhaps make mushroom jerky with them. I loved seeing Ellie living her best life in this video! Dogs being dogs is pretty great.

I live about 2 hours from the cities and recently got one that was a little bit smaller than those and the whole mushroom was good to eat. The part closer to the tree was chewier though. The indicators it's a pheasant back mushroom are that honeycomb type gill on the underside, the pheasant looking pattern on the top side, and the fact that it's all one big seamless mushroom coming from the tree rather than the type of mushrooms that have a top and a clear single stem. Those looked perfectly edible. If they are seeming really chewy then they might be more suited for dehydrating and using as a powder for soup or flavoring different foods. But I would think at least the outer couple of inches of them should still be pretty tender to enjoy. And since it's a new mushroom to you I always caution to not eat too much in one sitting until your body adjusts to the new wild food. So I wouldn't suggest eating all of them in one sitting, but you could definitely make some mushroom bacon BLTs and enjoy them.

It is a challenge but worth it. Nothing beats the feeling of this way of life when you can enjoy this. We all need to feel the sense of comfort in this way. Forget the cities, traffic, stress etc. Get to know who you are. And what better place than the wilderness.

Your area looks like it has a history of you cleaning up the trees on a regular basis. I notice this because, a hundred years ago when I was young, I worked grounds for a country club. We had this one area that was loaded with downed brush on a hill above the 8th green. It was about a hundred yards worth. The Superintendent ordered me to clear out all of the dead to the point where the ground could be smooth enough to mow, and it took about two weeks to do it. When I was done, I walked down to that green. It was like a heavy breeze coming off of that hill, which I'd never felt before. After that, I paid much closer attention to my own property.
Absolutely! We have definitely tried to keep it up over the years. Before I had the cabin, it was much easier to just burn the piles right then and there instead of cutting it into firewood, splitting it ect. Definitely a lot of work, but worth it!
