Here's some new trivia, Ed Boon was waiting in the hospital the other day so went on Twitter to answer questions and some one asked him who came up with the name 'Mortal Kombat', his response: "Steve Ritchie. Original voice of Shao Kahn. Pinball designer."
Cage is an amazing character. I like how they slightly where raising his story in 4 and in Deadly Alliance to really bringing him to a character heavy storyline.
People forget that even the classic timeline made him extremely important. I mean, he's the one that saw Armageddon coming and raised an army to fight back.
The evolution of Johnny was amazing. I honestly liked MK 9-11 Johnny the most cuz he was a decent man and good father. Seeing him in disbelief over Sonya's death was heart breaking. No over the top scream, no wanting to seek revenge for her death or any of those grand standing's. Just a broken man who lost his wife and seeing his daughter crushed by the loss. Perfection.
It's so funny but also so cool how Johnny went from generic douchebag actor #38 in the later games of the original timeline to one of most well developed and fleshed out characters in the reboot timeline.
I just had a thought: Was the scene where Younger Johnny goes all Rambo on after getting shot a Spaceballs reference? After Vespa gets her hair shot she goes all Rambo in a sort of similar way.
This is really meticulously documented, well done! One funny thing about Johnny Cage in Armageddon's opening cinematic is that he is seen pushing Sonya off the pyramid. That's quite ironic since she would end up being his wife in the new timeline.
Johnny Cage has perhaps the Biggest Importance and Development on any Character in the Franchise that went from a Solid Character, then Die,Come Back to Life,Be an Arrogant A-Hole Celebrity, and in the Original Era Other than the 1995 Originally he was meant to be the Protagonist but was Changed to the Point Nobody found him Interesting and lacked Some Parts in his Personality, the NRS Era Rebooted the Character and Improved Him as One of the Funniest Characters in Mortal Kombat, grew to be a Better Person,Husband, and Father, and became One of the Top 10 Best Characters in the Franchise,I can’t wait to see how MK1 is going to Portray Him.
Another solid history of an iconic Mortal Kombat Kharacter, especially with the new story content and information regarding the upcoming sequel to the MK movie reboot, another Mortal Kombat Legends movie, and his story beats from MK11, I now eagerly await the final chapter of the Metroid story, the restart on history of the Assassin's Creed franchise, and maybe in the future, redo the God of War story
@@GamerThumbTV hell yeah, I've been waiting for the grand finale to the Metroid story (for now), you could say I've been DREADing this day. Hai! Aruto ja...NAITO!

It would be cool if they revisited all the alternate history versions of characters, in the future. Like the universe where jhonny got really rich meets the version of him that became a god or the hidden power version of him. This would go for all characters with alternate ending through the games.
Johnny Cage has been my favorite character in the MK universe and probably of all popular culture since I was 11. When I first played as him in MK9, I just saw the badass in sunglasses. His douchebag ways we’re something I looked past, especially when he matures throughout MKX/11. He even became more mature than Sonya! I love everything about him. From his name, to his story, moveset (nutshot especially), his look (mainly for MK9), and more. My favorite moment from him was definitely the 2nd part of the MK 11 campaign. Radian’s thoughts on Cage coming true earlier than expected. Standing in the way of Shao Khan and Sindel attempting to put further harm on Cassie and Sonya. Dude literally drops the act, utters a sick/iconic Batman line, and fights for his family. Sure he lost, but he survived a hammer shot to the chest and matured. Real quickly, Radian is goated for recognizing Johnny’s potential as a hero. Looking past everyone’s doubts on the actor. The former Thunder God proved everyone wrong. Johnny Cage is indeed a hero! I pray he is done well in his third live action appearance. If they kill him off again, I’m throwing hands!
Growing up, I never really paid too much attention to Johnny Cage. It wasn’t until MKX and MK11 that I really started to appreciate him and became one of my favorite characters to the point where it just isn’t MK without him.
That's when his development was at it's greatest. They really pushed him into being one of the most important characters and I hope they continue to do so.
@@GamerThumbTV Yeah. Him and Robin Shou are hands down my favorite kung fu duo in film. A shame he didn't comeback for MK11. Would've been pretty sweet and yeah Trevor would've been much loved as well.
I would like to see Johnny Cage and Kotal do a classic MadTV sketch as a Friendship. But you know what's weird? The actors doing the voice work for Sub-Zero, Smoke and Scorpion are also doing voice work for Diablo IV, as well as Kitana and Liu Kang.
Johnny Cage has always been a top 5 favorite of mine, but I was disappointed in how little contribution he had to the original MK story line. But I love his development in the new timeline, and I sincerely hope Netherrealm continues to keep him relevant to the reboot. I would really love to see an animated film too that explores not only Cage's background, but also his time w/ the Special Forces.
They definitely tried making him more important near the tail end of the original timeline but then they reset everything. Hopefully he still retains an important role in the new era
5:13 It always surprised me that Johnny wasn't the main character. All signs point to him being the protagonist. He's the closest thing to relatable that the player can imprint themselves onto, as he's the only one out of his element. Everyone else in the first game is in some way initiated in the bigger picture of what's going on or has a rival or personal reason for being in the tournament. As a result, the player is a lot like Johnny, learning all this crazy stuff about clans, and gods as they go along. He always had an underdog aura about him. At times even the first movie felt like his story. Liu Kang, as iconic as he is now always seemed rather generic in comparison(in the beginning). I think they finally realized this by the time MKX came around and started developing him a bit more.
If my ability to play as Johnny Cage matched my love for Johnny Cage I would be unbeatable. Edited to add that the original JC actor for the game was let go because he posed for a advertisement for a another fighting game.
This Is Real is the MK9 portion where Cage thought it was all fake. Changing History is the rest of it, when Raiden altered the events of his life drastically.
Real answer, they wanted to give her a dramatic character death. In game answer: this Raiden was much darker, he was more concerned about defeating Liu Kang and his forces. Old Raiden would've lost the battle to save her.
Considering they reduce Johnny to the same thing at the start of every game.. I bet he goes back to the original Van Damne insult. They have shown either they have no idea what to do with his character, or they just hate his character.. They can only write the brash guy becomes a whole person arc. They have no new ideas or even know how to cleverly write the arc. Hell they set up things that would be good if they followed through on them, and bail every time. Mileena beomes outworld ruler, dies right away. Set up Dark Raiden, dies right away. Set up Lui Kang and Kitana to be the new villains... Bait and switch. They shit on characters to make them plot contrivances.. Shao Kahn was destroyed this previous game, Jade, Sindel, Ermac, Kabal and many more. Characters they never do anything with or waste... Noob Saibot, Jax, Reiko, Johnny Cage, Ermac, Rain, Cassie, Kenshi, Reptile, Sub Zero, Fujin, Erron Black and of course the most under used character of all time Havik.
@@antyoung24 depends how you look at it. Liu Kang is the "main hero" stereotype. Heart and soul doesn't have to mean main character. In both timelines Johnny Cage became a leading figure that outgrew his selfish means and held the kombatants together. He raised the army against Shinnok in Armageddon. And in MKX and MK11 he was concerned with his family's well being first and foremost, and teaching his younger self lessons. Heart and soul.
@@GamerThumbTV i didn't say Liu Kang either because of his main protagonist status. If you want my opinion, the heart and soul of mk is Sub Zero. That character has been in every mk and has endured.

Cage probably had the best character development in the series.
Very much so. From over the top, cocky actor, to savior of the world, to loving father. Hope he's awesome in the New Era too.
I just had a thought: Was the scene where Younger Johnny goes all Rambo on after getting shot a Spaceballs reference? After Vespa gets her hair shot she goes all Rambo in a sort of similar way.
