I think what he writes in the diary can be interpreted like he feels lonely. He's still trying to find a connection that's not there. And he's being somebody that's not him and that's why it feels weird to see him doing this things.
I think so many people gloss over what was actually written in the journal....both times Colin write about being "alone" and "distant", plus he told Penelope that "very few wrote to him" while he was traveling....Eloise even picked up on it in the first episode saying his new facade seems like a way to mask loneliness. Even the brothel scenes and the flirting that people are criticizing Colin for are classic ways for a lonely person to try and find a connection. Colin learned in the past seasons via his brothers that going to brothels and being charming got them to be well-liked ....so all of his actions don't make me cringe, they make me feel really sorry for Colin and sad because here is a really sensitive man who is constantly being manipulated and chastised for being so sensitive trying to protect himself and his heart from the world but that act/ armor is leaving him very lonely.
I'm so thrilled but also a little bit anxious. I know it will be painful to watch him be angry, but I'm sure the reconciliation is going to be worth it! 😊
In the ton at that time, guys his age were expected to go to brothels, sleep around with serving girls and maids, etc. Colin was considered weird by "the guys" because he didn't do any of that before. He wouldn't manipulate or hurt a woman on purpose or risk her reputation. Nor would he risk creating an illegitimate child (remember his family includes 8 children and he almost married Marina despite her pregnancy). In the same way that Eloise gives up fighting social expectations and compromises with her dress, her friends, etc. Even though it's not her style. Colin compromises, too. He learns "swagger" overseas in likely the male equivalent of the lessons he tries to give Pen. He bends to the flak he got about sex (even from Anthony), but only as far as the brothels and seemingly only in a social context "with the guys" who now think he's "more fun than last season." He takes 2 girls, so it's not even a pretend romance like he really wants. And he feels disconnected even while intimate with them. It's a physical thing, like playing tennis, for exercise (not for love or satisfaction). He's kind and sees to their pleasure, listens to their suggestions, and learns their techniques (the lip bite, caressing the thigh... - which will benefit his chosen woman later). I think he kind of approaches it all similar to taking a college course you need for credit, but don't actually care about. But oh, the transferrable skills are lovely, thanks. 😊 😅 I don't think he would have done any of the catting around he does in season 3 if everyone had not reacted to the Marina situation by blaming his inexperience in seasons 1 and 2. But it's not seen as the same kind of thing then as it is now, and that's not often mentioned in discussion. After all, his brothers both did all of this and worse. Anthony had a few mistresses he kept in succession in a house across town, for heaven's sake! But no one faults them for it the way they do Colin. It's hypocritical.
I believe you're spot on! Especially with the "two girls instead of just a pretend romance". 😄 And it surely is not fair, that Anthony and Benedict get free passes all the time while Colin gets shamed (at least by the fandom). I think a lot of people get frustrated with him caving in to societal expectations because he is not like his elder brothers and people want the good guy to be good. But having this journey is something he needed. Sometimes you need to try things that aren't for you in order to know they're not meant for you. 😊
Loving your reviews! The part where he practically throws her to the wolves without advice might be because he doesn't see her awkwardness. She's comfortable with him, so he thinks she just needs tweaking. He doesn't realize how socially inept she actually is. It's more proof that he sees her differently than the rest of the Ton, and he finds her awkwardness endearing.
Thank you! I'm honestly also thrilled. I'm thinking about filming while watching it the first time already. But I might get too obnoxious, so I'll have to see about that. 😂
I viewed the first brothel scene being uncomfortable as intentional- he is playing a part and acting how society expects him to act- he's not being himself, it doesn't feel right to him but he feels like he needs to act this way, that this is what is expected of him and so it doesn't look right to us
Colin forgave her for reading his journal immediately after she said his writing was good. And he was definitely looking forward to seeing her and was blushing when she complimented his writing again. They got back to their jokey ways making fun of Lord Basilio and by the time she was speaking to Lord Remmington, he was already getting jealous. *NOTE* ("Jealous" by Nick Jonas playing in string-quartet fashion.)

That's a very good interpretation. It would make sense with his act. I believe you're right! 😊

The 2nd and 4th episodes are my favorites so far! So good. His anger is so good. Its going to get worse next half. 😂 They are killing it!!!

Amazing review, can't wait for you to watch part 2 :)

tbh, i find the series portrayal on Colin' much enticing compared to the books...
I agree. He is way more likeable in the show. I really didn't like how he janked her around all the time. 😅

Yes, I agree 100%. It is just soo hard to watch. 😭
Lmao at “just go talk to your dad” 😂😂😂
