Oh my god, this is amazing. And I can't understand you people complaining that the horse looks forced and they have treated the horse badly. You don't know the facts and I don't either so drop it. I'm pretty sure that this horse has a good life, much better than many other horses have. I think they look like they're in perfect harmony and the horse is very pleased with the rider. This is simply amazing and the judges agree with me obviously.
This is horse and rider are beautiful. I have never seen such a beautiful dressage ride. This horse is in no way abused. I evented and showed QH and Paints for 35 years and believe me this horse is very well cared for. In eventing you do a three day event and you have to go before the vets for a trot up and if they see anything at all they pull you into the vet box to check the horse. This is truly a gifted and talented rider and a horse who loves what he's doing.
I agree with you that this is truly amazing, I have never seen such an amazing performance!!! The horse is sound, happy and healthy so I dont know why anyone wants to judge. Horse politics never cease to amaze me!!
OMGOMGOMGOMG I LOOVE THAT HORSE!!! WHAT A HORSE! WHAT A HORSE! OMG OMG I'm stunned! :'O I Love The Trott!!! And the passage, and everything!!!!! Beautiful video, the quality was very good!
This horse's paces are just....wow. I've never seen such an expressive horse before! He totally owned that arena. Fantastic! Best dressage horse I have seen in a long time (I'm more of an eventer myself lol) xxx
Endlich!!!!
Two pieces at least are performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and are orchestral versions of Jean Michel Jarre's "Oxygene 13" and "Equinoxe 4". I haven't tried to match all of Edward's music, but recognized these two while browsing iTunes. Album "The Symphonic Jean Michel Jarre". The original Oxygene 13 used for entry/passage/piaffe/trot has more of a beat on it, but does not seem to match the tempo of Totilas' paces at all. (It matches slightly for the extended trot work.)
you're right on all points. but I have to admit I didn't see it until you pointed it out because I was looking at the overall lovely "black with four whites" picture
Did he not change behind a few times during the tempi changes? I also saw that he was stepping under himself better at the free walk and when the rider picked the reins up that his strides behind shorten considerably. I thought the goal of dressage was to get the horse to step up under itself and carry more weight on its hind legs...
There is an absolutely wonderful video on here of Toto at the Den Bosch stallion show in Feb, where several times Gal can be seen GIVING the reins forward and you can see the horse TAKE THEM DOWN. He always looks to me as though he is reaching for, and playing with, the bits. Not leaning on them and tanking off. IMHO a wonderfully trained animal.
for those of you who want to know the name of the piece of music. This is the Overature to the 'Death of Classical Horsemanship in Competition Riding". It has not been named yet so, but will become to be know as such. Listen carefully to the ominous tones and watch the suffering of the horse! This is a tragedy happening before your eyes. History in the making.
I thought the Passage music was Oxygene 13? That's what I was told on Jarre's forum. I just wish they could have carried the theme on, as there a good few Jarre tracks that would suit his canter.
I have to say to you "THANK YOU" for stating the truth. In rounding the horse, there are two basic ways to go wrong: 1. to ride the horse above the bit with a hollow back. This is commonly seen in amateur riding. 2. To ride the horse overflexed and behind the bit with the back and nuchal ligament over-stretched and the back overly tense. This second method is more rare, and take some more technique but has been warned against by the masters of horsemanship for centuries.
music kur - Joost Peeters' arrangement of the dramatic music of Oxygene 13, Equinox 4, Song from a Secret Garden and --guess what-- Pirates of the Carribean accentuated the grandeur of the combination
Why is the bottom half of his neck so built up? (evident after he is "let down" after the ride and trying to breathe). Mechanical, staccato in piaffe, lacks collection--hind legs trailing esp. in the extended trots.
Oh also, if you will care to notice, Gal never really has a death grip on the curb, infact it is almost always without any pressure at all. I personally cannot think of any other horse/rider combination at this level and this kind of competition that I have really watched that I can say the same for.
LG
Please watch the one tempis numbers 3-4 and 8-9. They are not clean changes. The horse's head is tilted with the right ear higher than the left for the entire test. This is a twisting form of crookedness. The one time the right ear drops below the left is when the reins are let go in the extended walk and then the head is tilted the other way. This is a great horse. But I am shocked at the lack of observation skills in the judges and in the general public.
The sad thing from reading these comments (not yours) is how the public has been fooled by the black horsie, with the white socks and the special music and the freekish movement. Oh now I remember, this is what you usually see at the CIRCUS! Where horses are notoriously mistreated, now it is happening in the FEI arenas- nice!
And jaccko, people can enjoy watching the vid, they dont have to read the comments. Others want to have a discussion. I dont see why that should be a problem. If you want to enjoy the vid without being hassled, dont enter into a discussion where you are likely to be hassled.
@VelvetQ99 i agree- Toto is a very strong horse, even as a youngster Edward admitted he was a little frightened of him becuase he would just tank off and was too hot and strong to handle! although he says that now he knows him, Toto is actually a very easy ride- he learns fast and once he has got the hang of something he will only improve! the book Dressage Dreams 10 (look on Amazon) has interviews with Edward and his trainer Hans Peter Minderhoud. its a great book!
haha youre a good laugh - I respect your opinion, im fine with that. As long as you let other people who do like his riding and this horse and the way it is trained enjoy watching. Thats all.
The hind quarters do not even track up in the extended trots. All of these are 'insufficient' grades at the most ie. should be marked a 4 where they occur. And yes, I am an Olympic judge.
People that say that this unique horse have been pursed in any way is just bullshit. Right, his movements wasn't this high when he was younger, but thats all about strength. He is alot stronger now and capable to give it all out into his movements. This is a unique horse with alot of strengh - power - will and mecanic. Huge praise to Edward that can handle this much power, this is not an easy horse in any way. I just want to say "welcome to the future of dressage horses".
Brilliant horse and rider... but, isn't that what the horse does with its head at the verz end, a show of some nerv inflamation from overuse of the bit? Just wonderin...
assume because he once did it to Gribaldi or because he was once a pupil of Ankys or simply because hes from the netherlands-and you could almost include wider europe if you were to be very broad-he uses RK/HF. Is it not possible he might have adjusted his methods after the disaster that was Gribaldi? Totilas always looks as if he is giving his absolute utmost, not like hes freaking out if he puts a step wrong he might need to run for his life. I will find the vid and send it to you..
The horses are Fed, exercies, they do not have spur marks, their tongues are not blue. Clearly they are not abused - therefore this is a happy athelete
I got it, but I sometimes (quiet often) see, that horses are kept with their neck "working" through the whole performance. I only know the Russian word for it)
As IndianRes said... Go type in documentation hyperflexion clip 4c Then tell people that is *normal* and not abusive. Did you expect Edward Gal to say he cranks totilas chin into his chest and spurs like no tomarrow??
what a hame to see this nice horse trained to walk like a circus dog.I liked his movements much more when he was 7 years old,it looked more natural to me and you can see that they trained him with a method that is not natural of his movements because he is not coming after with his hind legs.but I have to say that his piaffe looks quite nice...
FYI this horse does not walk like salinero i've seen them both at national champ. diference is the rider Anky is very scared and never lets go she uses the rollkur forcefully. Edward actually uses it as a help but in the test will give him some reign. And he trust his horse.
Why don't you go look into it yourself. It's not hard to find sense he doesn't hide that fact that he uses it as a *training* tool. His ears are pinned about 50% of the time and his front end is working harder than the back. If pointing these things out makes you think someone is *jealous* you really need to go educate yourself.
It is very difficult to ride the horse and train the horse truly 'on the bit' with the poll the highest point. That is why this tenuous balance is such an art. It is extremely easy to ride almost any horse in hyper flextion and/or above the bit. Riding the horse in hyperflexion is a shame and really the stamp and calling card of the 'non-rider'. So we have really entered the era of the super horse an the non existent rider.
Have just read earlier comments and see some people already beat me to it about what music is used.:) silly me. Seems there will always be controversy over how dressage at various levels is judged though and, being very much subjective, will always be a source of disagreements!
Oh my god, this is amazing. And I can't understand you people complaining that the horse looks forced and they have treated the horse badly. You don't know the facts and I don't either so drop it. Magnificent display of riding. Complete harmony between horse and rider. What a horse! What a rider! Congratulations Edward and Totilas!
I also saw this live yesterday, and it really brought tears in my eyes. What an incredible, breathtaking horse this is.
The kür was just perfection.
Absolutely stunning horse and performance.
Best horse ever the ring so far? Oh yes..

wow that was awesome! and the horse looks really happy afterwards!

Watched it live it was absolutely breath taking! Words fail to describe. This is really only the beggining of what this horse could possibly achieve.
OMGOMGOMGOMG I LOOVE THAT HORSE!!!
WHAT A HORSE! WHAT A HORSE!
OMG OMG I'm stunned! :'O
I Love The Trott!!! And the passage, and everything!!!!!

Was lucky enough to be at Windsor - saw this live truely amazing!!
The most amazing thing I think I have ever seen!! Just outstanding. Made me cry. :o)
He does train using rollkur. Check it out yourself. He uses it as much as Anky does.

Re. my previous reply, perhaps this proves here that the atmosphere and feel of the music are more important than exact match of tempo.
Did he not change behind a few times during the tempi changes?
I also saw that he was stepping under himself better at the free walk and when the rider picked the reins up that his strides behind shorten considerably.
I thought the goal of dressage was to get the horse to step up under itself and carry more weight on its hind legs...
The walk music is from Secret Garden.
i was there to experience it live- it was totally amazing the crowd were on their feet.
Outstanding!!! Absolutely breathtaking!!

Yes POTC.. I love this music!!
It is Hoist the Colors from the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Soundtrack.
OMG! IT'S FANTASTIC!! THE BEST DREASSAGE HORSE & RIDER!!!!
What a wonderful sport!
I LOVE THE EQUESTRIAN SPORTS!^^
And... I want a black stallion!;)
Music for KUR the grandiose! Super!
OMG, what a expressive horse!!!
I think those who say it's rollkur don't understand this leadline ... When his nose touch his chest ???? that is the rollkur ...
