    I remember when I first started, I was doing tourist missions in an unengineered Dolphin and accepted one with a huge paycheck to a site called "Amazing Sky". Turns out, the paycheck was huge because it was most of the way to Colonia, which I didn't even know was a thing back then. I didn't know about the Neutron Highway, didn't know about AFMUs, didn't know much really. I completed that mission successfully with a ship that had about a 22LY jump range. Knowing what I know now, I do NOT understand how I survived.
    Also, I have terminal space-madness.

    • @tietosanakirja
      @tietosanakirja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This basically happened to mee too, though it was just data I was carrying.
      I changed ships *twice* on the way, bought an AFMU and made my first neutron jump half way to Colonia. It took me one *week* to make the entire trip.
      I've since then done the trip two more times, each time just about halving the travel time.
      I started playing about the time Jingles made his return to ED. So while Jingles has tried abit of everyting, I've kind of just travelled back and forth.

    The extremely high star density near the core is pretty much the reason ive warned you from using those settings on a trip to colonia. :p
    Theres just so many stars that the engine literally chokes itself to death... (That and for some reason the engine totally dosent seem to like Colonias nebula in general)
    You might want to keep the higher res textures for the skybox and planets tho, they dont affect performance in any meaningful way but give you a much crisper image.

    • @wes2129

      @@wes2129 The game can render them at a higher resolution allready, all you gotta do is modify the XML that stores your presets.
      Look up your "GraphicsConfiguration.xml" or "GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml" and change the values for "TextureSize" in the "GalaxyBackground"
      and "Planets" section respectively. You can go to 4k for the skybox and 8k textures for planets without noticable performance impact.
      The game gives you a nice amount of control there, you can increase the number of stars, brightness of the galaxy disc and nebulae etc.
      Even Ultra settings seem to be aimed at grafics cards with 2gb of vram, which is a little on the low side in 2020.
      Be warned about Colonia tho, even at stock settings the game takes quite some time to render the skybox when you change systems over there.
      Essentially, the witchspace animation is but a cleverly disguised loading screen, during wich the engine is composing the skybox image, according
      to what celestial objects are within a defined range. The more stuff its rendering the longer it takes, obviously.
      You can alter the number of stars, nebulae etc that will be part of the render, which in case of Colonia can spiral out of control rather rapidly.

    • @tobiasstamenkovic9628
      @tobiasstamenkovic9628 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After seeing the footage from this vid ive reverted the color and brightness settings back to stock (those were based on community recommendations, and even
      tho ive allready cut them in half its still been too much for my taste), and put up a copy for download:
      www.dropbox.com/s/4px14w75jfmzmqb/GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml?dl=0
      Just replace the allready existing override file with this one, which has the benefit of not getting overwritten with every patch as opposed to altering the base config.
      These changes only apply to the highest grafics preset available, either Ultra or High, and if you expirience slowdowns in certain scenarios just pick a preset one step
      below the highest one the game offers you in the settings menue.
      Feel free to tinker with galaxy/nebula size and brightness values, it can yield quite cineastic results in the right part of the galaxy.

If I ever ran low on fuel I just switched to economic planning instead of max range in the galaxy map and there usually is a scopeable star within 10-15ly. There really are a lot of stars out there, even in a 'desert'.

(i have a job so my playtime is very limited)
    . By the time i was 2/3 trough Q4 update hit (2018, the famous Q4 update) so i had a new toy (FSS) to play with, and i even got some first discovered anomalies YAY ... although when i got home i realized that now you can easily push your conda to 70ly with some grinding for a week or two... well - i was glad i did it back when in my style, i heard nowdays there are carriers everywhere so the danger of flying damaged is very limited... oh - and the 3 billion i got from the exploration data? looking at how mining (never did it) is a goldmine now... well yea. im glad i did it when i did it. :D

    I would recommend at least *looking* at the FSS scan in each system, just in case there are any water-, ammonia- or earthlike worlds (Their frequencies are between the normal terrestrial planets and the gas giants; earthlikes have a very narrow band directly next to uninteresting planets, so you can't really tell if you have one from the FSS spectrum, but you can see if you have a candidate).
    These three types are pretty valuable, and earthlike worlds with your name on them are great for bragging rights ;)

      I just came back from Colonia the long way, and sold 330m in data for my trouble (Would probably have been about 150-200m more if I mapped all HMCs but that takes forever). And the last 5000ly were in previously mapped space.

But what that hurting me the most to watch is Jingles not turning off non necessary systems to put the fuel burn down and saving fuel that way. His 2,07 fuel burn rate will come back and bite his rear at some point. No matter how much fuel he had packed with (Which also decreases the jump range slightly) it will gonna bite him at some point. What there uses the most fuel beside the thrusters is the shield generator. But also the smaller things, like sensor, power distributor, plantery hangar and so on. In my diamondback explore, Im able to put my fuel burn rate down to 1,23 while in supercruise with a top rate powerplant that I can put in it. And that is with only thrusters, FSD and life support as running on the power. Even if I turn on sensor, it will add a 0,01 ton to the burn rate.

    Traveling in style. My first trip to Colonia was in a keelback with a stock fsd. 22,000 LYs at 15 LYs a jump. Two weeks of travel.
    Nowadays I've got my Conda, a VR headset, and OVRdrop to play shows while I fly into deep space for exploration.

    Remember Jingles you can inject your fsd , so taking a second fuel tank is redundant... have some minerals with you, the synthesis process is the best part of this game.
    For long trips, the best way is the neutron stars road, AFM module, and a decent amount of materials. You will never run out of fuel, ammo, or repairs. I did the 5000 ly trip in only one hour like that.

    The neutron star highway can be great but is exceedingly dangerous. I ran into a neutron star where the exclusion zone around it went almost all the way out to the end of the blue cones. I thought I could still get into the tips of the blue cones to supercharge my ship and go, but the moment I entered the very tip of the cone, it tumbled my ship into the exclusion zone, forcing me out of super-cruse, immediately knocking every system in my ship offline (including engines) and inevitably destroying my ship.

    • @xacharon
      @xacharon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a white dwarf. Those have huge exclusion zones and are tricky to boost from. I consider them not worth the effort.

    • @Light-hawk
      @Light-hawk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xacharon I very well might have confused it with a white dwarf. If that is the case, I will definitely be avoiding those in the future.

    If you get bored on your way and want to speed it up I recommend the spansh route plotter - it will give you a route via neutron stars (just remember to refuel every now and again), of course that route will be rather well travelled! Watching the view of the galaxy change as you move around the galaxy is one of the coolest things - enjoy the core where the stars dot the whole of the sky! If you ever go to the edge of the galaxy looking out it literally is just black - no light at all and you really feel like you're out on a limb in the middle of nothing! Have a good trip Jingles! You've come a long way since you regarded 500ly as a long way :-)! (Literally!)

  • @EwanMarshall
    @EwanMarshall 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jingles, it is entirely possible to have an 80Ly jump conda that is fully equipped for exporation with vehicle hanger and shields for landing (stripped, so useless for combat). Detailed Surface Scanner adds no weight, the key thing for neutron superhighway is probably AFMU for repairing frame shift drive after 30-40 supercharged jumps.

    I love this game (unfortunatelly not too much time to play it "properly) for one thing. It makes your own plotline each time you play it. So far i had "star wars like" dogfight in the middle of asteroids field, smuggling and running from authorities, exploration run that took me a week of playtrough etc.

  • @dragonwithamonocle

    I flew to colonia once. I had about 45 mil at the time, and spent a few of it to purchase a diamondback explorer. Real cheap ship. I bought modules (no engineering) and outfitted for jump distance and fuel efficiency, with a fuel scoop and two field repair units. I flew in a private session because screw public. I used a route planner to take a neutron highway and proceeded to fly for about two or three hours a day for three days. I saw things most people never get to see. I experienced so much crazy in terms of super hyperactive neutron stars. I saw night skies that are beyond the wildest dreams of even the most primitive humans without so much as two campfires to pollute it. I made it to colonia. I ran some missions. I even bought a Krait Mk II and fell in love with the ship. Made a few million in exploration data. My name is on about fifteen entire systems out there along the route, mostly the ones I stopped to scoop fuel from along the way. Ran some missions out there, had fun, missed the hustle and bustle of the bubble and stations with good services, and my other ships. Colonia is great to visit, but there's so little there and the pirates are BAD. So I bought a sidewinder, hit the self-destruct button outside the station mass-lock and respawned in my ORIGINAL home system. Worked my way rapidly through several small ships until I made it back to my home station where all of my ships were. Ended up remote selling the krait and diamondback because it would have been hundreds of millions to get them home otherwise, and I didn't feel like doing that. Ah, good times.

    "You can outfit your ship for speed or utility or the trip to Colonia."
    Oh there is a third option sir... doing it on whim.
    I opted to head out to Sagittarius mid way through a mission for power play when I got fed up with Power play. Just jumped on the map screen and said "Jumping into THE black hole would be better than this."
    I never fully expected to make the journey in my little diamond back that wasn't really properly fitted.. but I did. No shields, No repair hardware, no weapons.
    I made it, ( took me months as a scanned and landed on many of the worlds I saw. ) and opted to swing over to Colonia.. because it was slightly shorter than returning the way I came.

    Jingles, if you ever get the chance while near the galactic core, take the opportunity to go as high as possible above the galactic plane as possible (preferably without getting yourself stuck there) to take in the view, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Back in 2017 myself and a couple of friends headed out into the black to visit Sag. A* and Colonia, (never believing for one minute that we would actually survive the trip.) At one point we decided totally out of the blue to go as high above the galactic plane as we could. The end result proved to be one the highlights of the entire trip, no pun intended. We ended up making a series our of our journey, posting it on TH-cam.

    Glad you mentioned the Road to Colonia pit stops as I was contemplating doing the run - not for engineering as I'm taking a different pace to that from yourself, but more as something to do now it's not worth raising funds from mining and because I was thinking about doing it at some point anyhow to try and get close to Elite in exploration. Now looking to hit all 20 stops on the way out (I now know also there's a couple of systems with two stops), might also try and find Jaques Station if near by. Route back will be more direct, but I'll be in my Diamondback Explorer with a 58 light year jump range (max just under 62, no guardian tech).

    Jingles; Ok, as far as the fields of Brown Dwarfs go (We used to call those "Badlands"...Jingles, if you look at the galaxy map with the grid on, you will notice numbers on those grids. Part of those numbers is "Altitude" above or below the galactic ZERO plane (dead center altitude). Those badlands comprise the ENTIRE AREA about 100 LY each, above and below that line throughout almost the entire galaxy (Minus the core region). Just stay above +100, or below -100 and you will be clear of it. It will not take thousands of LY to go around it. Just stay above or below it.

    No Jingles! You did it the Neutron star jump way, some of us did it before that was a thing. And myself, I did it in a Dolphin, 33 light years at a time. Over 890 jumps to get there. Then 450 jumps to go to SAG A, and...... then over 1000 jumps back too Founders' world. And even then was still 28% short of exploration Elite status. Oh yeah and the last 175 jumps were without a canopy. Several times i had to land to get synth materials to recharge the O2 on board.
    Second striping to bare minimums is not how anyone would prepare to go to Colonia in the first place! And even then anyone who did has less than 25 hours of sense ingame..... But just because you make your ship to the highest jump capacity there are sliders in the nav that allow you to set a max jump range so you can have a 84ly jump capable ship and limit it to half that with but a slider.
