The second generation Explorer was an excellent vehicle. I really like the 5.0 V8. It was long in the tooth by the time it was used in the Explorer, but it's a fantastic and reliable engine. Also, that 4 speed automatic that came with the 5.0 is one of Ford's more reliable transmissions. Only problem is, it is only available in 2WD or AWD, with a single-speed, non-selectable transfer case. I miss the Eddie Bauer trim level. The two-tone paint and refined appointments, mixed with the ruggedness of a truck-based SUV are a match made in heaven! I really don't want people to destroy these old Explorers turning them into rock cerawlers because they can't afford to destroy an old Jeep. I take mine off road once in a while, but I keep things tame. I still want it to function as a reliable daily driver.
I gotta admit, I've got two of these, I'm 18 and enjoy driving them a lot, one with 155K that's a V8, the other has 264K, also a V8, and your review was both offensive yet hilarious.
I’m 16 and I have our old ‘96 explorer limited 5.0 , we had the truck since the year 2000 I rode home from the hospital in it in 2003 😂. I love the truck so much I love waking up every morning of my life seeing it out the front window
You shouldn't flip a bird, show CD's. If the check engine light is on, get a Actron CP9680 code tester. It checks live, record, graphing, emissions readiness test, ABS, SRS, transmission test, oxygen sensor test, and MORE! It comes in a black carrying case. The screen is well-lit! It retains the memory of test results. Get 4 aaa batteries for under the rear cover. It has code-connect to diagnose codes. EBAY has it.
I agree these were complete pieces of shit! I have a 2dr 98 and it was running good at one time but now not so good! When I got it almost 2yrs ago had zero rust, now rusting bad at bottoms of doors lol I'll say 1 thing it's still better than my 04 Toyota Sienna van I got handed me down which does not run at all anymore.
My favorite design of the explorer is the square one, up to 1994, but this one is also nice. However my favorite explorer overall is the one that came after this one, best bang for your buck imo and a workhorse for a daily commuter. Great pick for a first car for a teen that wants a SUV When my brother got his first car he looked into buying the explorer but ended up getting a mint 99' Tahoe for a very good price
I have the Eddie Bauer Edition and at around 312,000 miles, still running strong as ever!
As a fellow 99 owner I can appreciate this

My '98 is a high maintainence rattling sohc V6 shitbox. Slowly I poor money and time into it, hopefully it can handle some offroad times in Wales.
I have one with 271k and one with 153k... Same boat 😁

The voice recorder is a great idea for recording traffic stops in a time before smart phones were common place
"Screens, buttons and gouges bubbles out of the dash board" best way to describe it lol.
I’m looking at maybe buying one of these soon. I lost it at the audio recorder in the visor. Amazing.
I recorded me goofing around with my friends in mine, and now that is the only recording I have of their voices, since they have moved away.
Young Mr. Regular? Good Humor, and good review.
Nice review!
