I used to own a Mitchell GCN, made for the Canadian Navy in the 1940s or 50s. It was rackover and also had a bipack magazine which I used for shooting opticals. It could shoot rock steady up to 144fps, but most of the time it was driven by a stepping motor as part of a motion control or rostrum camera setup. It had been hard fronted with a Nikon F mount. You could see this was made by craftsmen who took genuine pride in their work. It was a beautiful instrument, a fine example of the optical engineer's art.

+cdevarona You see them everyday, there are still plenty of these still in use, almost every movie shot on film has at least one VFX shot filmed on a Mitchell. As far as movement steadyness goes it's the first and last .. I shot a Commercial on S/N 111 (1927) this Feburary .. You would see it and not know it ..

That special effects matte set is very cool. Very early Hollywood.
